1. Fuck's sake. Still, hopefully it'll be worth the wait. Getting used to this shit now, though - my most eagerly anticipated game of last year was Journey and been foolishly waiting on the The Last Guardian since 2010. Industry rumours don't bode well for the latter sadly. Aside from Colonial Marines, this year I'm looking cautiously optimistic about the new Tomb Raider and reckon The Last of Us could be something special.
2. Your objection to "people coming out" worries me more than a little. Justin Fashanu will be cursing you right now, down there in gay heaven.
3. It's not really about "getting woozy" or "doing wanking" - just about giving a balanced appraisal of Carroll's performances without feeling the need to be proven right. He's been shite but has shown signs of improvement and people have been largely calling it as they see it. *does wanking*
4. Negative much? One of my main problems with Número Veinticinco, as you can tell from any of his posts, is that he supports his moaning internet persona over his club.
5. LittleBigPlanet2 Dismissed by some as a game for kids or, worse, a game for girls LBP is definitely one of the jewels in Sony's (admittedly tarnished) crown these days. I thought the first one was too restrictive for all its hype and the single player wasn't up to much, but LBP2 which came out in January was a huge improvement. I'm not into making levels so can't comment on the creative side of the game but I certainly enjoy playing them and this game gives you free unlimited DLC. Seriously, some of the levels those kids and, yes, girls come up with are astounding. LIMBO Cheating a bit with this one as it's only a 2011 release to us PS3 dweebz and losers chained to PSN but it was well worth the wait. It's only slight and you might balk at a tenner for a short game but I definitely didn't feel short-changed. Ico & Shadow of the Colossus HD Collection Cheating further still with these as they're ten and six years old respectively but if you didn't get to play either on the PS2 then you're in for one hell of a treat. I could go into great detail on this release but it'd bore you senseless so I'll just say: two masterpieces on one disc for twenty quid - any PS3 owner who has not at least tried these games is a living disgrace. Alternatively, ignore the suggestions in this thread and just look at metacritic.
6. Not surprised to see Tom R totally ruling this thread given how fruity he sounded on that podcast. You go girl! And few are as high profile as Cristiano Ronaldo...
7. I thought their lot were much quieter than they were in November even though there were loads more of them, weirdly. Just watching the highlights there - wasn't Kenny a bit emotional at the final whistle? Great to see.
8. Predator all day - unless it's one of those piece-of-shit preds from the AvP franchise. Damn those films were crap.
9. People have been saying in various threads that Kenny shouldn't receive any further financial backing from the owners... but what state will we be in if they keep throwing money at Comolli?
10. If you keep an eye on the bench during the game it's Steve Clarke who gives most of the tactical instructions to the players. Just sayin'.
11. First of all apologies for the (re)tardy review – no spurious excuses here, just one disgustingly lazy article. It’s no defence but I do think it’s fairer to judge a record after three weeks’ listening as opposed to just three listens. There are Youtube links to most of the tracks; I’ve lifted the rest off the mix CD and sendspaced the shit outta them. The CD was mixed (spot on to these ears) and came in a neat ejector case. Oxton Soul Secret Santa 1. Along with 90.48% of the tracks, this was new to me – it works as a laid back intro but as a standalone track it doesn’t do it for me. Definite goosing music, though. 2. Surprised me this: poppy with jazz inflections, it kicks off a run of six superb tracks – the lyrics defeat my Portuguese GCSE but this is such a breezy guitar track the vocals could just be an afterthought. I sense this SS has a broader/truer definition of “soul” than my own preconceived ignorance. 3. Another Latin effort – more production here… are those strings!?!? So, orchestral funk underpinned by jazz. Wow. 4. Ashamed to say I’d never heard any Nicolas Jaar (which has since been put right). The laconic vocals and frantic percussion are perfect together. Love the stone-dead ending, ideal lead into… 5. Finally, one I know! Upon receiving the disc those many many weeks ago and seeing it was a soul mix, clocking this guy and Thundercat on the playlist made the first listen a little less daunting. Put me right at fucking ease, it did. Anyway this is a great track, click on the title for a Youtube if you haven’t heard it. 6. This is one damn cool instrumental, you keep waiting for the rap to kick in and thankfully it never does. One for the summer. 7. An artist I knew of but never bothered to check out before getting this disc (thanks SS). This track has one hell of a hypnotic beat. It builds and gets heavier, you catch snatches of stray vocal, it builds and build some more and then snaps. Warped brilliance. 8. J Dilla - Crushin' (Yeeeeaah!) Okay, this music is not my music. Disdain for Dilla might be slightly at odds with a love for Flying Lotus but seriously I couldn’t be more cracka if I had Jacobs biroed along my tiny pale penis. 9. Beautiful track. Click on the song title. Immediately. 10. Madlib - Interview #4080 The words make as much sense to me as the Iberian nonsense earlier, and usually I hear that negrified call of “BIIITCHH” and switch right off but this one has such an insistent beat that it won me over eventually. 11. Tyrone Davis - Is It Something You've Got This is more of the ‘soul’ I expected when playing the CD for the first time. Boy, am I not disappointed: the vocal, the groove, the highlifey guitar – it’s just a great song. It was an instant favourite. 12. J Period and K'Naan - Let's Start (Fela Tribute) Good choice which injects some urgency. The Messengers project was an interesting one, if a little too self-aggrandising. Still, judged as a standalone track this is a beast. 13. Strange one, this. So ominous it could have been chipped from side two of Bowie’s Low but when that feminine voice appears out of nowhere it becomes almost a piss-take. I say almost, because this is a fantastic piece of music and bloody nightmarish. Great stuff. 14. Foolishly dismissed this song as a throwaway 60s curio after the first half dozen listens, but in its way it’s a perfect track to follow the atmospheric James Pants. This is truly sinister. What initially sound like the screams of excited groupies actually reveal themselves to be the frightened fleeing squeals of a teenage girl fearing for her hymen. A jauntily rapey track which is musically nothing extraordinary... it nevertheless works. Where the hell is SS finding this stuff?!?! 15. This is where my hard-on for this CD droops for a couple of tracks. This song is pleasant enough but I’m not sufficiently soul-literate to be grabbed by this, sorry SS. I do like the sweeping, melancholy ending. 16. Leroy Hutson - So Nice As with the Raphael Saadiq song this is perfectly listenable but not up to the rest for me. 17. … and we’re back! Disco funk? Yes please. I defy any man, woman or child to hear this and not become fully erect. 18. Some impressive mixing from SS here. Another ridiculously funky track. Sounds 8-bit minus the lumberjack shirt and Where’s Wally? glasses and I love it. 19. Thundercat - For Love I Come Already had his record and this is a(nother) superb choice. One of the finest living bass players and every note after the 2:30 mark is pure jazz brilliance. 20. Knew nothing of Nicole Willis and first listen had me believing this was at least forty years old. Two thousand and fucking six. This has such a groove and as much as the description creaks: timeless. 21. Adam Rock - Just for Ewe Suitably chilled final track, garbled vocals an’ all. Not a lot to say about this one in isolation, it just finishes the mix off in style. Sorry lads for the late review. Especially given the effort my SS has put into this CD. I’m a fucking disgrace and rest assured self-flagellation is the order of the day. Anyway, thank you to my Secret Santa for redefining ‘soul’ for me: it’s not a genre I was into in any shape or form (or so I thought!) and when I saw the CD’s title and gave it a listen I reckoned the ‘soul’ description was either a red-herring or misnomer. Maybe it was? Either way it’s one cool fucking mix and more eclectic than I could have hoped for; thanks a lot to Paul for putting it together. It's been an education, sir.
12. It was said at the time, let it be said again: Bascombe & Winter eat balls for breakfast.
13. "They're mostly worn by meffs. Mostly."
14. Haha I actually made my post before reading this. Great minds?
15. This chimp paved the way for other Hollywood greats like Clyde, Dunston Checks In and Nicolas Cage. Show some fucking respect.
