  1. Yeah that's all it is... You know what you're talking about so your a few steps down the line, the person asking for advice needs the basics and that's often as far as you need to go. Nice one.
  2. Saxon, you clearly have very good intentions but quite often your advice is overly complex and complicated. For the lads on here asking for help it's would be best to keep it simple. It's like if someone has a key sticking you'd tell them to take all the other keys off the keyboard for best access, reinstall windows, replace the pcu and factory reset the router. They're on here asking because they don't know what to do. Keep it simple. Above is a prime example. You didn't establish what was asking for the user/password but advised him to reset the router.... And then AFTERWARDS you check he's got the broadband details. Turns out it's a cable. For connection problems it's good practise to find out what the lights on the router are doing, change the micro filter if possible, try the test socket on the phone line etc. Not wipe the router. Also... to pay for antivirus is unnecessary. You're clearly a knowledgeable chap, but there's really no need to go so over the top. You can cause mayhem that will cost someone money.
  3. Personally I'd keep the Rickenbacker or get yourself a nice Gretsch.
  4. Top Tip: Fellas, find out if your wife/girlfriend has been secretly reading 50 Shades of Grey by smelling her fingers.
  5. Yeah a system restore is major overkill. Exactly as CL describes; new browser and uninstall/reinstall flash and java.
  6. Scaramanga is correct. Take out the old stick and just leave the Crucial 2gb stick in there. Boot up and see if it makes a difference. If it does, then you can quite happily get another 2gb stick from Crucial. With RAM, it's always best to work in pairs of the same size. Just to reassure you, Crucial provide a good product that works well with Macs.
  7. This place is so much better with Simon back. Never leave again Si.
  8. Dropbox is very good for documents, and files. I use it all the time and the ability to create share folders is very useful. You get a decent amount of storage for free too. Oh and the iPhone and iPad apps are great too.
  9. Malwarebytes mate. Find it in c:/program files/malwarebytes and rename it so the virus thinks it's something else and lets it open. Do it all in safe mode though for sure.
  10. Combofix is a good suggestion. I would try to start in safe mode (with networking) and give malwarebytes another shot at it. Sometimes renaming the .exe fools the virus. Haven't looked into it but if it's a Trojan you should run Gmer too.
  11. Good to have you back Si. I don't see how you coming back is going to help him, so don't do that. Haven't you got any work for him out in France? He'd like that I'm sure.
  12. They're mental. Why the fuck do they address this article to power users and then proudly show that they have designed it for people who have never seen a computer before?
  13. Bung a movie on a memory stick and head to Currys. The proof of the pudding is in the eating. Not that it's much help, but as I understand it Samsung and LG TV's should manage it. Although I don't know about the format. Might need converting. An .avi file doesn't mean a lot really, it's the codec within that does the business and they are many and varied. Samsung's helpful guide... Samsung Media 2.0 ...looks good for you.
  14. Just make sure you have iCloud turned on on your current phone TP. I had to manually switch it on with my 3GS.
  15. Went to Tesco's earlier and noticed that somebody, somewhere, thought it might be a good idea to make this classic prawn cocktail snack in a salt and vinegar variety. Preposterous bullshit, I thought, but curiosity got the better of me and I bought some. Just had a pack and even though it pains me to say it, they are a taste sensation. I wouldn't say that I'm a full prawn-cocktail-to-salt-and-vinegar convert... but these are well good. Don't judge a book by its cover.. and I might even venture a 'don't knock it until you've tried it'. Salt and vinegar. Skips. My life was just turned upside down.
  16. I've had better... ..cups of tea than the one I'm drinking right now. I would love to bang the bones out of Kelly Brook though.
  17. I thought it was great. The Hamster On A Piano bit was brilliant. And Karl saying "it's like having a wasp in the car" or something like that. Loved it. And yeah... Funny, sad, thought-provoking. Hope he does a series.
  18. I'd give it a go if I could put beans on it.
  19. Brent isn't 'him' in the slightest, and Andy Millman is a totally different character. Brent was the sexist, chauvinistic, brash, borderline racist arse who was desperate for people to like him. Millman was a fairly mild-mannered and downtrodden extra who craved fame and credibility which ultimately ruined him. Up to this point, they're the only sitcom characters he's played aren't they? I think it's fair to say that Derek will be none of the above. Just saying, he gets a lot of unjust criticism I think. Top class comedy and character writer. There's a sitcom with Karl Pilkington playing himself (with a bit of hair). It's going to be class for him alone.
