The point is that any buyout clause is better for the player than none at all. He currently has none at all, or so it seems, so I can see Suarez accepting a 'fair' clause, ie abroad and for a fair price. If he stays it'd be the best, most realistic, compromise for both parties.

Assuming he currently has no buyout clause, which seems to have been proven in recent weeks, then adding a £60m clause is beneficial to the club and the player.

I think xerxes is trying to imply his current contract has a lower buyout clause than if he signed a new one, i.e .the not better "for him, why sign?" comment. I'm not sure why he's implying this, if indeed he is, with all that's transpired recently.

I'm not by any means condoning how Suarez has behaved recently, but if his flirting with Arsenal has shamed our owners into loosening the purse strings then we may all one day thank him for it.

If he does get an updated contract here, which I think generally is a good idea of he's staying, I'd be wary of putting in a clause that is effective if we don't qualify for CL. Seeing what Suarez is capable of recently I wouldn't put anything past him, including hindering our chances. We should just agree to £60m (or whatever the club feel is a fair price) and to any club abroad, irrespective of their or our CL participation.

No chance, why would he go back? He has no unfinished business. If the Mancs decide they have to sack Moyes mid-season they'd hand over the reigns to the likes of Giggs or Neville, at least on a caretaker basis. I think Moyes will get at least 3 years even if he wins sod all, as long as nothing disastrous happens - Ferguson will convince them to give him time.

Fair enough. Naturally though I'd only advocate signing a new contract if the terms were suitable to both parties and with no ambiguity, I'd even encourage him let the union read it before signing! Give him a clear clause which is suitable to both parties, i.e. £60m (or whatever) to a CL club overseas.

While on the surface what you're suggesting is plausible, I don't think it stands up if you think about it in more depth. Do you really think that LFC drafted a written contract which did not reflect the verbal one in the hope that none of Suarez, his agent, or lawyers would spot the 'deliberate' mistake? A verbal discussion which, by the way, included a knock down fee allowing him to move to any club of his choosing? Because that seems to be the suggestion, a suggestion which is very implausible. Rather, I think, the more likely scenario is that at the time Luis had good relations with the club (who had tried to support him over the Evra incident albeit very cackhandedly) and was very happy with his huge payrise and content with a £40m clause based on these good relations/good faith. There's nothing wrong with that from either party really, except now it seems Luis is not acting in the good faith intended by trying to insist he can move to a direct rival for perhaps half of his worth. I think if Real Madrid had come in for him for £45-50m the verbal discussions and written contract would have been upheld, unfortunately that's not the case. edit - by the way, in case you hadn't noticed, Gordon Taylor enjoys getting his face in the news so him having his very muted say (for once) on this is no indication of anything

You talk about his ambitions as if they are to be admired, so please explain, what's so ambitious about wanting to go to Arsenal?

If we do eventually sell to Arsenal for a reduced (less than our value) fee then there better be some scope for adding a massive sell on clause, because I've little doubt that if he goes there he'll be agitating for a move again in a couple of years.

Look at the Heinze case - his release at a set price was in writing. The Mancs blocked it, Heinze asked the PL to intervene and guess what, they backed the Mancs based on conjecture basically. Everyone said we were stitched up then, and it's continued regularly since.
