That was the week that was (Jan 27 - Feb 2 2018)

Saturday Jan 27…

L 2 West Brom 3. Fucks sake, that was shite. I’m not sure what upsets me most, the terrible performance or the fact that it’s almost certainly going to be another year without a trophy. I mean fucking hell, we laugh at Everton but since 2006 we’ve won one trophy and needed a penalty shoot out against a Championship side to do it. We need one soon as otherwise you wake up one day and realise its been 20 years.

The top four is obviously important but it isn’t an either/or situation. There’s absolutely no reason why we can’t be adding a cup or two to the collection while also competing for the Champions League places. Arsenal haven’t had a problem doing it and everyone - us included - takes the piss out of them.

Any time we’ve gotten close to winning anything in recent years we’ve bottled it and not been able to get the job done. The more that happens, the worse it gets and the harder it is becomes to get over the hump. Winning an FA Cup isn’t going to suddenly make us ready to to challenge for the title, but not winning anything and frequently losing in finals and semi finals sure as hell makes it harder.

Sunday Jan 28…

Klopp does an interview with a German TV station and there were a couple of interesting snippets from it. Firstly on Can’s contract. “Emre is still a young lad but he has developed into a great player and is very important for us. Sometimes a player just wants to sit out his contract. That’s not cool for the club, but there are moments in which you have to accept it. And as long as the player behaves like Emre does, then I have absolutely nothing to complain about. He gives everything he has and identifies with the club.”

Doesn’t sound like there is any way he signs a contract here until he sees exactly what his options are. We might actually be the best option in the end, but he’s going ‘test free agency’ as they say in US Sports.

Secondly, on replacing Coutinho.

"Of course It's been a bit difficult at the moment with the injuries of Jordan and Adam [Lallana]. The team is growing together but it still needs more input from outside. If a player leaves you have to replace him adequately as a minimum."

The key line there is; You have to replace him adequately as a minimum. How does that tie in with not signing anybody then? Especially when Lallana is about as fucking durable as a quaver.

I understood why the club decided not to pay the £20m or so extra that Leipzig wanted for Keita. That’s a lot of money for basically what amounts to a four month loan. But not signing anyone would be a massive risk given the lack of creativity and goals in the midfield Coutinho left behind.

We have to get in the top four, not just because of the financial implications, but because it’s where we need to be and if we’re in there then it is at the expense of one of the other members of the ‘Big Six’. In strengthening ourselves we’re weakening a rival. Alternatively, what if we miss out and let Arsenal sneak back in?

It looked like they were a fading force and we were going to leave them in our slipstream, but they will end this window with Mkhitaryan and Aubamayeng and perhaps a renewed sense of purpose, while we end it without Coutinho and our chins on the fucking floor. Imagine playing the rest of this season with the midfield we’ve seen in the last couple of games?

Meanwhile, Ovie Ejaria (remember him?) scores a late winner as the u23s increase their lead at the top of their league. Klopp loved him not so long ago but he seems to be completely out of the picture now, which shows just how hard it is for youngsters to make it. He got relatively close, but a career elsewhere awaits for young Ovie.

In other news, Mourinho makes a crack about Sanchez being ‘cheap'. “A free transfer, not bad eh”. Just fuck off you annoying short arse trolling cunt. He’s costing half a million a week wages and a player that YOU paid £30m for 18 months ago but didn’t have a fucking clue how to use because he couldn’t play right back in a back six. Yeah, a real bargain that. Tit.

Monday Jan 29…

AM: Newcastle want Sturridge on loan. This actually makes a little more sense for us to do than let him go to Spain or Italy, because if he goes to Newcastle he might score a decisive goal against one of our rivals. What? It could happen. Christmas is out of the way now so he’s probably ready to get back out there for a few weeks until he feels another little twinge. If he goes to Spain it benefits him, but what's in it for us? Apart from saving his 150k a week wages.

He can’t even get on our bench ahead of Ings and Solanke at the moment so what does that tell us about what Klopp thinks of him? He’s never there when we need him, but if he’s going someone should be coming in to replace him because it’s leaving us seriously thin now if anything happens to Firmino. Don’t forget that Holgate thing is still ongoing. Not sure why it’s taking so long. The FA are probably waiting for the window to close before they hit him with an eight game ban.

Meanwhile….

The World of Football: “Look at the kip of that new badge, can Leeds sink any lower?”.
Leeds: “Hold our beer…. Hey everyone, we’ve signed Adam Bogdan!”

PM: Whoa, Sturridge didn’t show up at Newcastle because he’s headed south, to West Brom. They’re no worse than Newcastle at the moment and all his family are in the Midlands so it’s easy to see the appeal for him. It’s still a fucking shame that such a talented player is ending up on loan at West Brom. His body just isn’t up to the rigours of professional football unfortunately.

And on that note, saw this on Instagram today and it’s pissed me off….

week4_2.jpeg

I'm annoyed but I don’t know which part of it is the main cause for my irritation. It might simply be Coutinho being back. It might be Lallana calling him a ‘class act’. It could quite easily be the fucking state of the jeans on the pair of them, but I think it’s just the mere sight of Lallana that’s got me most riled up though. I can’t even look at him right now. He’s in my doghouse.

He’s one of our best players and I’m a massive fan of his, but we can no longer rely on him. I hate that, because he’s such a terrific player and we need him desperately. This latest injury isn’t serious, but does anyone think this is the last time he’s going to be ruled out this season, especially when we start playing twice a week again?

Interesting remark from Klopp about the lack of stoppage time on Saturday. He intimated that it was because of BT not wanting the show to over run. I don’t think that’s the reason, but I do think an explanation needs to be given as to why there were only four minutes added on at the end of the first half when it should have been AT LEAST double that.

Also today, I saw Phil Neville on TV grovelling. It was pathetic. “I’m disappointed in myself if I’m honest”. If he was disappointed in the shitness of his gags I could respect that, but that wasn’t the case. He was cow-towing to all the sad fuckers who demanded he be sacked for being a big raging sexist. The only thing you should be 'disappointed' in is that you haven't got the balls to tell them all to fuck off and get over themselves.

Tuesday Jan 30…

Huddersfield 0 L 3 If Klopp can get more of his mates in to manage some of these bottom half teams we might have a shot at winning something. Huddersfield have basically lay down for us twice now. We didn’t even play particularly well with the ball, but we were excellent without it and for most of the game they couldn’t get out of their own half. We needed this win just to calm things down as it was beginning to feel like things we’re getting away from us, and all the misery of this fucking transfer window isn’t helping either.

Speaking of which, Markovic is said to be close to joining Swansea for £15m. I know we take the piss about him being shit, but he’s not really. He’s a good player, he’s just not good enough for us. We’ll do well to get that kind of money for him like, but he’s better than anything Swansea have so he’d be a good signing for them. Fare thee well, Lazar, we’ll always have that little five game stretch when you looked like a world class wing back and hit the bar at Sunderland.

Meanwhile, as our fire-sale continues, Spurs are closing in on Lucas Moura from PSG, Chelsea are on the brink of getting Giroud and City have broken their transfer record to sign a new centre half. That record could be broken again tomorrow as they’ve slapped in an even bigger offer to get Mahrez, who I’ve wanted us to sign for 18 months now.

This window is a fucking car crash and it’s making me miserable.

Wednesday Jan 31…

Good night for us as we moved up to third courtesy of Chelsea losing 3-0 at home to Bournemouth. The mancs lost at Spurs, which technically may not have been the best outcome for us if you’re looking at things from a cold blooded, detached, logical viewpoint. In terms of the top four, it would have benefitted us more if Spurs had lost, but fuck that.

I was made up with that tonight. I want to finish in the top four but I also want United out of there. They’re shite, they’ve got no business being in the top four, let alone second. Hopefully ourselves, Chelsea and Spurs can bump them out of it by the end of the season.

On the transfer front, thankfully City didn’t get Mahrez after Leicester quoted them £97m. Not sure what to think of this. I feel as though we’ve opened the door for this kind of shit to happen because we set a benchmark with Van Dijk. If a centre back goes for £75m, then are Leicester being unreasonable asking that much for a player who won the title and was named Footballer of the Year only two years ago?

I don’t think anyone will pay that for Mahrez, he’ll probably go for around £65m in the summer, but Leicester were right not to do business with City for anything less than what they asked for, as City waited until the last 48 hours of the window before coming in. That’s too late for Leicester to do anything so good for them telling City to pay a premium or fuck off.

As for us, nothing happening here other than Harry Wilson signed a new contract and then went on loan to Hull. Good move for him and I really hope it goes well for him. Love watching him, he’s a lovely little footballer and he’s like the Salah of the u23s. I don’t think people appreciate just how well he’s done these last 18 months. He’s scored 42 goals in a season and a half from the right wing. The Salah of the valleys.

Thursday Feb 1…

Well we didn’t get £15m for Markovic, don’t know who it was who put that out there and got our hopes up, but he left on loan to Anderlecht and we got nothing for him. See you in July for pre-season again Lazar. And the year after that, and the year after that, and the year after that. May as well bust this caption out again…

week4_1.jpeg

“Pre-season 2027: Following a successful year on loan at Aberdeen, Lazar Markovic

reports to Melwood determined to finally establish himself at Liverpool”

Strange situation over at Everton where that Lookman kid joined RB Leipzig on loan despite Fat Sam saying he wasn’t going anywhere. Allardyce backed down and let him go but said “he’s making a mistake”. Really? Swapping Everton for a wealthy German club that challenges for the Champions League places every year? Fair play to that kid, he’s obviously got a good head on his shoulders.

Friday Feb 2…

The Anderlecht coach says it will take six weeks to get Markovic fit. What the hell has Klopp had him doing all this time? I reckon even I could get fit in six weeks and I’ve been sat on my arse, barely moving while eating junk food and drinking fizzy drinks for ten, no wait, twenty, no wait, how old am I? 44 years. He’s been training every day, how is he not fit? No wonder no-one would buy the fucker.

Saw this on LFC TV today, and I have a few takes from it…

First, and I knew this already but this provided further confirmation, Wijnaldum is such a nice lad. Great personality and always smiling. It doesn’t make up for him constantly going missing away from home, but nevertheless, it’s hard to not like him.

Secondly, how shy is Sadio? Kinell, it was tough to watch. “I don’t like music” he says, just so he could get out of singing something. It also disturbed me a little that he thinks big Emre is Dutch, particularly as seconds before he'd described hims3elf as being the most intelligent lad in the car. Why would they put him in that situation though? Get someone in there who isn’t scared to death of a camera. Get Bobby in there, he'd be fucking hilarious, he's a born showman. Of course you couldn't rule out the possibility of him fingering his missus on the back seat while streaming it live on Instagram, so maybe that's it.

Lastly, none of them knew the words to YNWA, which surprised and saddened me. I blame Hendo for that though. Seriously, I do. He’s the captain, he should make sure that song is on the playlist and belted out in the dressing room before every game, instead of Drake and all the other shit they no doubt have on there.

You’re Liverpool players, act like it. I mean, this is the song that gets played after finals when we win something. I know none of these losers have experience of this (Hendo did win the league cup I think), but one day they might surprise us and not choke in a final, and when that happens they'd better know the fucking words to YNWA otherwise it's going to be embarrassing.

Not knowing the words didn’t stop Big Sexy from trying to sing it though, but he sounded like a cat being strangled, it was funny as fuck. That makes me like him even more though. I hope he stays just for his crap singing now.

Meanwhile, West Ham sacked their head of player recruitment after he advised the club to not sign any more African players because “they have a bad attitude” and “cause mayhem” when they are not in the team.

Presumably he also wants to avoid Germans because they’re always the first to arrive at the training ground and grab the best seats in the canteen, and he won't want to sign any Italians because during the war their tanks had six gears and five of them were reverse. The French? Can’t be signing them as they’ll seduce your women.

Don’t want any South Americans either as they only want to stay for a couple of years and then fuck off to Barcelona. Actually I agree with that last one.

So anyway, that was the week that was...

Just because Mr Unflushable had a brief period of success at Sunderland (or what would amount to adequacy at a mid-table PL team), does not, I repeat NOT, make him a good player.

He was good at Hull. He's good enough to get in at least half the teams in the Premier League.

Didn't Markovic score against Spurs once, or did I dream that?

Think you dreamt it.

I remember him scoring a belter at Sunderland.

Didn't it hit the bar? He may possibly have scored in the same game, but the belter didn't go in.

That comment about Markovic being good enough to get in half the sides in the premier league says more about the state of half the premier league than it does about Markovic being alright.

Just checked and Markovic scored 3 goals for us , all within a 2 month period before and after Xmas 2014.

Bournemouth , Sunderland & Spurs.

Vaguely remember the Sunderland one being decent , don't remember the other ones at all.

Me either. I sort of remembered him scoring at Sunderland, think it may have been deflected, but it was the acrobatic 25 yard volley that hit the bar that stands out.

The only other thing I remember about him is how well he played against Sanchez when he was wing back when we beat Arsenal. Oh, and I remember him getting one of the harshest red cards I've ever seen in a European game.

If he had bitten his nails before the game he wouldn't have got sent off it was that light a touch.

Compare Markovic's fingernail very lightly touching the nose of the Basel(?) player, resulting in a red card, versus Dembele sticking his hand in Can's face on Sunday, not resulting in even a free kick. Funny old game.  (Struggling, still, to see anything vaguely humorous about Moss's performance). Good player, Demebele, but he'd lose 50% of his effectiveness if refs clamped down on his hand-offs and general arm-waving whilst running with the ball.

So I didn’t dream the goal against Spurs. Pretty sure it was in the Kop end and Lloris should have saved it as well.
