Reds linked with Pastore and Matic

Various reports continue to link Liverpool with a January move for PSG's unsettled Argentine Javier Pastore, whilst Benfica midfielder Nemanja Matic is now also said to be on Brendan Rodgers' new year shopping list.

Speculation has been rife for weeks that the Reds plan on making a move for Pastore after the 24 year old appeared to have become surplus to requirements in Paris. The capture of Pastore in 2011 marked the start of PSG's big spending as they shelled out €40m to prize him away from Italian side Palermo. He responded by scoring 16 goals in his first season in the French capital but has failed to build on that bright start and is reportedly available for a knock down £17m.

A natural 'number 10', Pastore was the subject of interest from Arsenal last summer before they eventually landed Mesut Ozil, whilst according to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Napoli and AC Milan are both reportedly keen to take him back to Serie A when the transfer window re-opens.

Meanwhile, reports in Portugal claim the Reds are plotting a move for £30m rated Benfica star Matic. The Serbian international joined the Portuguese side from Chelsea as part of the deal that took David Luiz to Stamford Bridge in 2011 and has since developed into one of Europe's most highly rated midfielders. He was named Primieira Liga Player of the Year last season and according to A Bola the Reds will face stiff competition for his signature from Chelsea and Real Madrid.

So, are Pastore and Matic realistic targets?  Would they be good additions and whose place would they take if they came here?

Any midfielder we bring in now should be Gerrard's (future) replacement, not Lucas'... Having a good/great option there would at least afford Rodgers to give him a break now and then even if he can't "bench" him for a longer period.

Btw, doubt we'll get either of the players mentioned in January, perhaps we can compete for players of that calibre when/if we qualify for the CL?

Maybe we'd be better playing  a 4-3-1-2 rather than 3-4-1-2. Obviously that would mean an extra body in midfield and we could switch back to wing backs as and when required. The only problem of course is that we are over-stocked with centre halves unless maybe we sell Skrtel in January, and he hardly deserves to be jibbed on current form.

Pastore's an odd one, I was under the impression he wasn't the most versatile and so would be a big outlay for, essentially, competition for Coutinho. Matic I liked from when I was in Amsterdam (certainly impressed me more than Gaitan) but don't know much. Hughes would br a good buy but still so much of it is potential with him.

All our best teams down the years consisted of "ugly looking fuckers" from Tommy Smith and Phil Thompson through to Sammy Lee and Peter Beardsley....it's only when we got people like Redknapp John Scales and the like that we started goin shite.

We really shouldn't have sold Jonjo.

Get pastore in, exactly what we need, Brendan seems to have an ability to tap into the psyche of young players and get them to fulfil their potiental. Coutinho and Pastore behind Suarez and Sturridge, yes please.

Anyone actually shed some light on what type of player matic is?

That derby kid doesnt look all that to me bearing in mind he seems to get loads of space to play in at that level and we've seen the likes of Spearing and Shelvey look world beaters at that level. Dont rate him, needs more time to see how he develops, going in to early to stop other teams getting such and such a player is what led to vignal's la tallecs and so on being brought in on silly wages etc.

.

I'd compare him to Javi Martinez, mayabe not that good YET, but has all the tools to become player of such class + can also play several positions including CB and is physically monstrous

Fuckin hell is that Derby's kit?  Looks like it's been put together by a blind spastic.

the use of the word spastic is incorrect. it's 'Scoper' , that shirt and a face only a mother could love. Good prospect though.

Good, we badly need that rather than another AM or a middle of the road CM like Allen.

Even a shit DM type would improve us.
