  1. I know a couple of radiographers and can confirm. Best I heard was a Jack Daniels bottle up the brown star - square end first.
  2. So, is anyone going to post anything that Nawaz or Ali actually said, in context, or just other peoples' commentary on them?
  3. Yeah, it's shocking when you see the way him and the likes of Ayaan Hirsi Ali are treated when they speak out about extremism.
  4. I've just finished reading "Islam and the future of tolerance" by Sam Harris and Maajid Nawaz. Harris is the famous 'new atheist' neuroscientist and philosopher, and Nawaz is a former Islamic radical who has also been a Lib Dem candidate. The two of them were thrown together in debate, found common ground and became friends. It's a pretty short book, 125 pages presented as a dialogue and suitable for reading in a single sitting. I particularly found it helpful in defining a distinction - which I hadn't fully appreciated - between Islam, Islamism and Jihadism. Very readable and I recommend.
  5. Probably been done before (cba to check whole thread): Yer ma makes shit breakfast
  6. Im happy to agree that Western foreign policy leaves a lot to be desired, but I don't agree with the likes of Chomsky who think that it's responsible for all the Islamic terrorism we've seen in recent years. People are always going to be manipulated to varying degrees, but it's obvious that many people truly believe the words they read in their holy books, and make choices accordingly.
  7. It's pretty clear from reading the relevant portions of the Islamic holy books - not just the Quran, but also the Hadith, the Shari'ah and the biography of Muhammad - that there is a central doctrine of jihad which isn't represented in other religions. The initial idea of jihad (while Muhammad was still in Mecca) was quite peaceful and could be fairly translated more as "striving" than "holy war" (hence the "Islam is a religion of peace" parroted by the likes of Obama). However, it was revised three times during his lifetime, each revision superseding the previous, to the final version, which is an offensive war in pursuit of either victory or martyrdom. This version of jihad is explicitly stated as being greater than other service, and of the highest rank in the sight of Allah. Islam is a total ideology, striving in pursuit of world sovereignty. It's a shame that so many commentators, speaking from the comfort of secular, liberal societies, choose to ignore this in favour of the "Muh! Racist!" retort that accompanies such a reading of the facts.
  8. Yeah, it' was a kids show but all the adults seemed to love it.
  9. I was never able to massively drink; I'd be puking after seven or eight pints and I reckon I've only every been in double figures once or twice. These days I just have a few and then switch to spirits and take it easy. I'm plenty pissed enough at that. I found out the hard way that too much beer made me quite miserable and aggressive, while spirits lifted me back up. Wherever I'm going - even if it's for a meal where I'll be drinking wine - I always start off with a pint or two. I love the thought of that first pint. And if I'm in a group it takes me 1-2 drinks to take the edge of the social awkwardness so I can relax and enjoy myself.
  10. Some girls mothers are bigger than other girls mothers.
  11. Yeerss. Double yeerss and yeerss again.
  12. You forgot this dude. Think he's an Arsenal fan but maybe he could do a job for us.
  13. Repped for the use of the word "portmanteau". I'm all for portmanteau repping; or, as I like to call it, portepping.
  14. Interesting. I'm old enough to remember when the idea of different types of computer communicating via modem seemed unthinkable.
  15. We'll cunt them in the bastard. St Patrick's Day massacre.
  16. Was listening to Lee "Scratch" Perry yesterday, inspired by this thread.
  17. Bugs Bunny never made it to Pismo Beach.
  18. Shows how out of touch I am with music these days...I had to google both of these to see if they were real band names. I genuinely thought you'd used some sort of random word generator.
