1. Woah... that's been around for a long time: I used to work for a school called Educatraining. I didn't know the name until receiving my first wage slip; I left in disgust.
2. Was digging around in Youtube, after reading a piece on Zimbabwean Hip Hop in the Guardian tonight, and stumbled across this mini-documentary about the scene there. Amazing rhymes, all beat-boxed, with loads of free-styling and sounding very reminiscent in style to all those early 90's crews. Hope you enjoy it:
3. Looks ace. Apparently the things at the end of the video are prizes you get sent for unlocking in-game achievements.
4. My favouritest Alonso game for the two assists at the start of this video, especially the first without even looking. Mental:
5. Leave it out. There's a picture of Kenny in the background so he must be sound.
6. In Brotherhood, collecting feathers (or whatever it was) unlocks some weapons, if I remember right, but I don't think they had any bearing on the actual game in the first couple; they're purely for gimp bragging rights. Then in Revelations, you can collect some shite to open up Desmond's story. I thought doing away with the races and the beat-up tasks was one of the best things that Brotherhood did; they got so repetitive I just sacked them off.
7. That just looks incredible. I'm still deciding whether to buy a PS3 or not. I've seen one for 289€ with all three Uncharted games but I thought it would be just a tiny bit too extravagant to pay that much just to basically play three games (albeit games that seem exactly what I want from a computer game). Seeing this is making me want it all the more. I presume there'd be a little ICO element to it aswell, leaving her to go and solve puzzles to help her get to places, though that girl seems a little more capable of handling herself than ICO was.
8. I thought number one was far too samey and had to stop playing it after a while, returning six months later to finish it off. But I loved the concept and knew that it had loads of potential. Number two was loads better but still wasn't quite as good as it could be but I reckon number three was maybe the most enjoyable game I've played. I love the freedom of the playability and the size of the game, especially that you aren't in one city for a bit, then whisked somewhere else; I love the fact that you open up and get to know more and more in depth the city and surrounding areas. And those underground temples were just something else for a massive fan of the original couple of Tomb Raiders, like myself. I still get an uber-nerd boner when you climb to the top of some of those absolutely massive spires to sync the eagle vision and just sit there, admiring how far computer games have come on (loading for an hour from a cassette!) when you're just looking at the scenery on a fat HD telly. It's mental that you can still see people going about their business down below. Now I'm about 70% into Revelations and I reckon it's the most beautiful game I've ever played. The graphics are just stunning. Some of the free running is still as annoying as ever, jumping in directions you never ran in or just into walls or leaping off roofs but you just learn to accept it in return for all the game's fantastic qualities. I recently went down into the catacombs, looking for one of the keys, and it just blew me away. I'm hoping there's some more of that to come but I'm still just enjoying training up my assassins and unlocking achievements at the moment.
9. Amazing film, really enjoyed it and thought the casting was ace for the ladies in particular. I liked the twist at the end and didn't see it coming. It was good to tie the three films together in that way. Only negative which has already been mentioned was the whole prison/climb scene. It should have been far harsher and more gruelling than it was. A few chin ups and some mystical words from a wizened, blind dude and that was that; he found the strength to twat someone far harder than him. Still, it certainly didn't spoil it and I'll be going to watch it again very soon. Gutted that this trilogy has come to an end as I love Batman and don't think any film has ever done him justice until Nolan got his hands on him, portraying him as the truly fucked-up, angry bastard that he is.
10. Witches Hat? That was a Popeye where I grew up. Funny Feet rocked as well but, if I had to choose (and had the money, as they were more expensive than a lolly) then it was an Oyster, every time. That white gooey shit at the back of the shell, having pasted through all the ice-cream, was manna from heaven for a sweet-toothed kid.
11. With a desire to see more live football and just living round the corner from their stadium, I bought a Levante season ticket last week. Surprisingly enough there were no queues, I just walked into the offices and, five minutes later, walked out again with a card in my wallet. All La Liga home games, first few rounds of the Copa Del Rey and the first few rounds of the UEFA, all for the princely sum of 160€, I couldn't believe it. Turns out they're doing an offer to get more bums on seats (no ladies days as of yet, though). October sees back to back visits of Real and Barça. Now I'm just praying we draw them in the UEFA. Best of luck to those of you on the waiting list over there.
12. Haven't checked in here for ages, sorry. Lifetime, I take it you're over here at the moment. I'll PM you my phone number; give us a shout if I can help with anything. Chances are, if you went to any of the bars or areas I recommended for the f***b***, I might have staggered past you last night, looking for a celebratory kebab. Steve, mate. Was great to meet you and the wife too. Sorry the restaurant wasn't what you were after; I've never been so was just looking for somewhere expensive, as per the requisites! Sometimes Valencians go over the top trying to be posher than they actually are. I think it's some hangup they have because the city is neither as cosmopoitan as Barcelona nor as cool as Madrid and drives them to spend hundreds of millions on a space age art gallery and opera house. Glad you found somewhere you liked, though.
13. I'm surprisingly positive and strangely excited about being Rodgered. A bold move and only time tell if it's the right one.
14. Sounds interesting. I've just usurped the Brotherhood Elder but still haven't made my mind up about Mr House. I've got a feeling he's going to be joining my long list of casualties. One more question, I've just got Ed-E upgraded but have no idea how to do the same with Boone. I like the two of them so reckon I'll keep them as companions but who did the rest of you go with? I'm a snipey mo-fo, haven't bothered adding anything to my melee stats, so they suit me well. Sometimes I'm still deciding which rifle to use only to realise Boone's doneall the dirty work. I like the fact you still get XP for their kills, something that didn't happen in number 3, if I remember correctly.
15. Just got an ace perk that allows you to repair weapons with similar ones. Very handy. With regards the ammo, that's what I was thinking. I take it it's geared more towards the double-hard bastard setting.
16. Been sucked well and truly into this game now. It's a bit samey to number 3 but that's a plus point. I got a bit pissed off with a couple of the linear quests at first, that one where you're helping the crazy Nightkin and the ghoul, and felt it wasn't what the game was about so I've since just been putting markers on areas of the map I haven't visited and set off wandering. I love it. Got up to level 22 and have only recently met Benny and Mr House and had an invite to meet Caesar. I can't decide who I want to kill, though. I've generally been keeping everyone on side, then fucking them off, then kissing arse a bit to make sure they keep giving me missions. I can't stand the pompous Paladín mother fuckers but I want them to give me power armour training so did a mission for them which has introduced me to a whole new tribe, the Boomers, or something. Amazing. It just never stops. One question I have, though, if any of you pros are about: do any of you bother making ammo? I've got shed loads of empty cases but always have the cash to just buy new ones. It seems you've got to destroy your perfectly fine shit, just to make others. Did any of you bother doing it or is it not worth it?
17. Arse, now I'm here I need to post more. Not all strictly Hip Hop but I care not, I know some of you will like them: The Rebirth - Everybody Say yeah Starving Artists Crew - Organic Chemistry Raashan Ahmad - The Crush Jazz Liberatorz - What's real (feat Aloe Blacc)
18. ¡Por fin! Some charitable mother fucker has put this song on Youtube. edit - thinking back to Paul's request about naming songs, sometime in a distant past... It's Connie Price & The Keystones - International Hustler. Enjoy, you lucky bastards:
19. Lifetime - That's a good area, more or less halfway between the city centre and the beach and pretty close to the area, Canovas, that I talked about, where there are a few places to watch the unmentionable. (It's also got some weird, yet alluring, Rumba bar, filled with Latina lovelies that keeps drawing me back after long drinking sessions). Steve, nice one. Hope to see you Satdee. I normally work but I've got the day off so I'll be aiming to get down there a while before k*** o** to get warmed up and make the most of my freedom. Any other forumites more than welcome. (I've already met Crouchieboy (a real gent) and his lovely lady when they were over last!)
20. Sorry, I totally forgot to reply in this thread. Rico, I booked your table, check your PMs. Lifetime, that looks amazing, mate. Whereabouts is it?
21. I've just remembered, he told me you can book online but to make sure you get a window seat you should call. If you do want to go there, let me know and I can call and book it for you, if you want, so you don't have to a) pay for an expensive phone call or b) speak Spanish. I would imagine they speak English, though, as it's a posh place.
22. Rico, I've been asking around and I think I've found the place for you. It's called Vertical and, coincidentally, is just round the corner from me. restaurante vertical I was in a class with an MD who I'm teaching English to and he called in his resident schmoozer who recommended it to me, saying he always takes anyone he's trying to impress there. Apparently it's essential you book in advance to make sure you get one of the window seats as, not only is it a Michelin star restaurant, but it's on the ninth floor of a modern tower block with a spectacular view, overlooking the City of Arts and Sciences with a view of the whole city beyond. There are other seats with a view looking out to the port and to sea but he says the view isn't quite so impressive. There's no menu, it's a 'menu de desgustación' - little tasters, so it's perfect if you don't speak Spanish, they just bring out little dishes of gourmet shite, piled up on little plates, one after the other - you know the drill. The bloke that recommended it to me is very well connected, by the way. He said if there's any trouble getting booked in I should let him know and he'll 'have a word'. Ha!
23. Review 1: Guitar Shit. Winter Beats - I Break Horses Erm, fuck me, what a track. An absolutely beautiful opener to a new year of new music. A little arpeggio synth lays the path to some subtle vocals and then... man, I'm a sucker for a build up. And this builds up and builds up and then some. Never heard of them before. Will be hearing lots more of them in the future. You hear it and just want to hear it again. Reasons Not To Be An Idiot - Frank Turner Didn't rate it first time. But it grows on you. I imagine I wouldn't be a massive fan of this dude but this song does the business. It has all the trappings of what a good guitar song should have; interesting lyrics, uplifting beat, a middle eight that goes somewhere before a break down and then kicks back in. Good, honest Indie-Pop. Reference to The Smiths... maybe a clue to the sender. This Is Love - PJ Harvey Biggest beef with this song is that it never kicks in. Good melody, nice riff... come on drums. I just want them to start pounding. I like it more the more I listen to it, purely because I'm not going to be disappointed. The best bit is the break down in the middle eight because it seems more powerful when it comes back in. Good song but needs umph. Holocene - Bon Iver I was listening to this on the way to work. I stepped off the bus into a beautifully bright, fresh day and something happened. My eyes started to water and I got butterflies in my stomach. I've never used the adjective 'achingly beautiful' before. I have now. I'm listening to it now and it's still just as powerful. I will be listening to this band more in the future. Going to listen to the rest of the song before I continue. One moment. I can see for miles, miles, miles. What a line... I was not that magnificent. Fuck. The way he sings it. A thank you to my SS is merited here. PDA - Interpol I don't know. They do what a good, rocky indie band should do but don't quite push my buttons. It's got all the parts a good song should have and fair play but I don't know why I'm not arsed about them. No offence, SS. If I heard it in a club, I'd dance and enjoy it but maybe wouldn't listen to it in my house. Having said that the ending and the build up to it is great. They obviously know what they're doing but, I don't know... I shall now take a break to stroke my cat. Cult Of Personality - Living Colour The cat is now sated and is trying to bite me. I don't dig this song. Sorry. I'm yet to skip it but it's just not my cup of tea. Soft rock guitar solos, soft rock lyrics, boring drums. Sorry SS. What can I say? I'm so happy with the CD I feel bad for slating this one. Fight Test - The Flaming Lips I love this band, though I'd never heard this one. I'm a little confused, however, as I don't know if this is an ode to Father And Son by Cat Stevens or just a massive rip off. It's still wonderful, though. Typical Flaming Lips chorus and synthy sounding bass. Just a great song that starts well, gets better and finishes perfectly. Supernatural Superserious - R.E.M. What can I say? If you like REM, you'll like this song. It does all the things a good REM song does. The last album of theirs I listened to was Monster (old twat, that I am) but it's nice to hear them again. They do what they do well. I like the riff after the break down, when it kicks back in and the harmonies too. I probably won't get back into them but the song works well in the mix. Which is something I haven't said so far. Despite not digging totally a couple of songs, the selection has been really enjoyable together so far. And then... "What are you like? ... you've had a right life." You've had a right life? Beautiful. Just 'real' lyrics... man, what a pretentious fuck I am. Born Under a Bad Sign - Richard Hawley And then I melted. ... I don't want to type as I'm listening to this but have to mention the dirty effect that precedes the simple chords that make up the solo in this song. Uff... Psycho Killer - Talking Heads I can only say, "Really? This is by Talking Heads?". I thought they were shit for absolutely no reason. I've danced to this in more indie clubs than I can shake a sweaty snakebite and black, speed and Lucky Strike enhanced stick at. Well I never. Stick it on the list, boys. To Love Somebody - The BeeGees This one. This one is the one that has been stuck in my head all week. I thought they were just some falsetto singing, disco twats. Turns out they've produced at least one absolutely classic track. It's enough to make me want to investigate further. Wow. I'm listening to it now and, just... wow. What a song. My butter isn't the firmest in the world but it's considerably more liquified now. High and Dry - Radiohead It's been a fair while since I've heard this one. Maybe not since I was in a band. And, as everyone knows, you can't be in a self respecting band and not know how to play this song. Don't need to say anything about this song, as it's so well known. It works brilliantly in this mix and I've really (really) enjoyed listening to it again, especially the wonderful singing. Nice one. Faster - Manic Street Preachers Love the band, love the song. I think this is the one James Dean Bradfield refused to play live, wasn't it? Or was that Revol? Who knows? Who cares? The Holy Bible has to be up there as one of the best albums of all time. Richie writes the poetry, James manages to invent syllables in words that don't exist, just to make them scan. What a voice... "If you stand up like a nail then you will be KNAAAACKKED DOWN!". Truly wonderful. All My Rage - Laura Marling Probably wouldn't listen to this normally but works in this mix nicely. Folky, female, fiddly-dee guitary stuff. That sounds patronising and I don't mean it that way. It's a nice song. Anti Orgasm - Sonic Youth You hear five seconds of this song and you know who it is. I used to be into them, Dirty was a great album and Bull In The Heather was a great song. Not into them so much now, though. It's not them, it's me. I'm older, tamer, more sedate... what can I say? However, this song works brilliantly in this mix and ends the album fantastically. That East coasty, Pavementy shit is just special. Conclusion I think I know who my SS is but I'll wait till I've reviewed the second CD, 'Funky Shit' before I say anything (the sixth song of which is called 'Woo'... , hmm. ) I've enjoyed this mix massively. As a result I will be investigating; I Break Horses, Bon Iver, Richard Hawley, The Talking Heads and The Bee Gees. Thank Woo... I mean Thank You, SS, from the bottom of my my now, considerably-enriched, heart.
24. I'm loving the book at the moment but can't read it in too long chunks; you can't help but do his voice in your head as you're reading it. I almost wish I'd lined up the soundtrack on the MP3, as instructed at the start, to truly appreciate it. I had to apologise to the bloke I was sat next to on the plane, who was trying to sleep, as I was trying to stifle my guffaws (yes, I read The Beano as a kid).
