I was almost tempted to replace my Desire HD with a fancy new one, but to be fair it still does everything I want a phone to do, and it still does it all quiet well. For anything fancier, I've got the Nexus.

Is the BSOD a 0x00007B? I've seen this at the point where, after the drivers are loaded, it then tried to read certain bits from the registry on the HDD, chokes upon it, and throws up the BSOD. With it being a laptop, there's probably a recovery disc creator proggy somewhere in 7, so play it safe, make those disks so at least you can go back to factory spec and then nuke the HDD.

Christ, they did for me a good few years ago when was signing on for a few months, and what a ballache that was. They had just closed the one a few miles away, and the alternatives were Aberystwyth or Carmarthen, both over 20 miles away in opposite directions. Almost every second postal signing form would get lost, meaning you ended up making the trip anyway to argue the toss and bring out the old "Legally, as soon as my letter goes in that box, it's considered as sent/delivered so fuck off with suspending my benefit" line before waiting for the inevitable "explain yourself" interview with the manager and being told on one occasion "Well if you had a job, you wouldn't have this trouble." Yeah, give me your job so I can deal with clients with a bit of sympathy you wizend old cow. Do you really think I want to sign on? It was this that spurred me on towards self employment, rather than wait around a few more weeks/months for a steady job to pop up. I suppose, from their side of things, it worked. Make it as much as a ballache to claim JSA as possible, therefore enforcing you to find an alternative.

With judges and the CPS being able to use discretion on these cases, I just think that it might have been better to have let things lie rather than advertise the fact that homeowners are now more legally empowered to knock shit out them. Ultimate Boot CD - Overview Device manager/disks from within Windows will tell you who the manufacturer of your HDD is. it has HDD diagnostics amongst other handy utils) for all the major HDD manufacturers except Toshiba, and for those you and use HDAT to check and attempt repair of bad sectors. You might have to change SATA mode to "IDE" or "Compatible" in BIOS for it to pick up the HDD if it is currently in AHCI mode, but that will help eliminate (or othewise) some of the more common HDD faults from being a problem.

I take it you can get into BIOS with another card? Strange. Video card BIOS maybe? When it goes into BIOS it'll try to drive the card with a particular resolution and refresh rate, which seems like it's failing on, so I can only imagine some kind of initialisation/handshaking fail going on there.
