  1. does o'neil actually want to strengthen his threadbare squad or is he just going to spend the rest of the summer crying about gareth barry. brilliant management.
  2. think he gave the interview in english. wrong choice of word, but the rest of what he said doesn't seem that outlandish. everyone knows contracts don't mean shit anymore. the mancs are only having done to them what they've done to others.
  3. spain have always had less physical, but more skillful players. they'd won very little. the reason they won the euros this time around isn't a justification for small, skillful players it's a justification for clever management; a clear strategy, good organisation and team selection and the ability to instill belief. just as greece's victory in the last tournament was, in a completely different way. i know which team i rather watch, but it doesn't make one victory less valid than the other. it's not about players it's about teams. the sooner england realise that, the better they might be. the rest of his article is contradictory gibberish. paul fucking parker and diego maradonna? O_o
  4. silva's a very good player and at a good age. he can fill either of the three positions behind the main striker too. he's a garcia upgrade. not quite as many goals yet, but more reliable with his passing
  5. very good. rafa needs a few pepper pots on that table though.
  6. he loves to go a-wandering, and give the ball a smack, and as he goes, we'll all sing for the red shirt on his back. affel-laaaaay, affel-loooow, afell-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha. affel-laaaaay, affel-loooow, for the red shirt on his back.
  7. wasn't being entirely serious. although it wouldn't surprise me. one of the problems for the spanish national team is the regional rivalries that are lived out through football. catalans v castillanos principally. but then add the basques, andalucians etc. on top of that. fabregas - a catalan - has slagged off barca on more than one occasion. beyond the fact that he's also an absolute tool there are reasons for one and all to hate him. i'm sure villa would be interested in playing for arsenal having said all that.
  8. the body language experts amongst you will have noticed how much everyone in the spain squad hates fabregas.
  9. may well be true, but above all that kind of comment is more clever posturing by rafa. strengthens his own position, as well as bringing further attention to the fragility of the situation at boardroom level. don't believe the americans (or hicks in particular) can afford to see the club fail given the parlous state of their finances, and desire to reap the benefits of huge stadium build/tv contracts. not to mention further tarnish their already terrible public image.
  10. his word is law. now let's see... rafa's opinions or those of some no-mark poster on red cafe? i'd go for the manc every time, don't want to look like a yes man.
  11. marco donadel that twat from razorlight
  12. hasn't shown that much to justify the hype on the few occasions i've seen him. think he's a kind of old head on young shoulders type, rather than 'the new ronaldo'. versatile, tactically aware, and good user of the ball. probably a bit slight to go straight into a central midfield role.
  13. he'd be better off at arsenal. he's the sort of player you need to give freedom. £28 million and he'll probably end up like joe cole, taken off every other weekend because he doesn't track back. he's an obnoxious little fucker, but he's the sort of player we could do with. someone with a bit of arrogance to run at defenders.
  14. it's clear he's working through the alphabet. arbeloa, agger, aurelio, barry, babel... er... degen, dossena, downing. the striker must begin with a c.
  15. the reason full back has become an important attacking position is that there is less and less space on a football pitch due to the increased levels of fitness and athleticism. heard wenger recently say that even in the last two years the distances covered by players has increased considerably. a fullback with license to get forward becomes an extra man in attacking situations, which in turn gives your winger more options. ideally we'd have at least one top class fullback who could offer a threat in the final third.
  16. united bought carrick for 18 million. how would many of our fans reacted if we'd done that? they'd also spent upwards of 50 million on rooney and ferdinand in the years before that. not to mention all the money they wasted on forlan, saha, bellion, djemba-djemba, howard, dong, kleberson, smith, park, kuszcak etc. as for bentley and barry for 30million, no one has the first idea how or when these deals are going to get done. i suspect that the fact we're considering selling alonso as well as offering carson, riise, crouch, pennant and whoever else in part exchange suggests we're not as flush as all that. we need to sell to buy. which is not the case for chelsea and united who both have £100 million benches.
  17. barry, downing and bentley are at least proven in the english leagues, and have room to improve even more in a better environment. i think its very easy to get excited about foreign names on the basis of a little bit of hype. and an obsession with signing the next torres or ronaldo, forgetting that for every one of those there's a veron or a schevchenko. we can't afford to waste a shed load of money on one player and see him fail like those two did. ben arfa plays irregularly in what has been a shocking league over the last few seasons. he's also a headcase. and i doubt anyone bigging him up now has seen him play more than a couple of times. could be the next pires, but he's just as likely to be the next reyes. writing a player off who hasn't even signed for the club, never mind played, while bigging up some lyon reserve on the basis that a french journalist said he's going to be better than platini, just about sums up everything that's wrong with football these days.
  18. a tribute personally think he's improved this season.
  19. barry performs consistently in the premiership and covers two positions, he also scores and creates goals. i rather 10-15 million on him than 25 million on an unproven foreigner just because he's got a few step-overs in his locker and looks great on youtube.
  20. we should be going after frank worthington or rodney marsh. proper footballers who can do dribbles and stuff.
  21. surely that depends on where you play on the pitch? are you saying a really, really good central midfielder should have no defensive responsibilities? for me management is basically about organizing a team, motivating it and buying players. some managers will be better in some areas than others, either through talent or resources.
