Rodgers: "Sturridge king of his own destiny"

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers says Daniel Sturridge is 'the king of his own destiny' and has described the striker as 'one of the nicest boys I've met'.

Speaking ahead of the Reds trip to Swansea, Rodgers has paid tribute to the £12m frontman who is expected to be fit after missing England's two World Cup qualifiers with a thigh injury. “Daniel has been excellent since he came here. He’s scored 16 goals in 20 games, but he also knows it’s about the team" said Rodgers.

"He has this myth around him that he is arrogant, a difficult boy, but he is actually one of the nicest boys I’ve met.

“When he was at Man City he was a top young talent, the best No.9 in European football as a young player. He loved everything about the City and he wanted to be a hero there, but then they got all the money and he didn’t get a chance.

“So he went to Chelsea, scoring loads of goals in training and practice games, but not getting a chance there, either.

“I told him when he came here that I needed him to commit himself to the cause and that we would make him the best he can be. He understands that he is the king of his destiny."

Sturridge was a great purchase. His attitude seems great, he seems to get on really well with his team mates (there was a video on the official site with videos of him and his team mates), and above all he's really a good player. What Rodgers said there was quite enlightening: one of the best young attackers in Europe for that age group, then went to Chelsea and was scoring in practice games and training but not getting his chances; he obviously had the talent and ability, his time at Bolton showed that.

It seems to be a bit of a theme of ours, and I like it. We're getting players who were very good young players but for one reason or another aren't playing for their current clubs. Coutinho was heralded as all sorts of brilliant when he first joined Inter, but being behind Sneijder meant we had a good opportunity to sign a quality player for less than his worth - at least according to talent. He's the same as Sturridge, really. Sturridge was sitting on the bench watching Torres.

Now we've got Sakho, and he's the defensive version of those two. 23, and despite being called the future of the French defence at 17 and all that, found his club taken over by the mega rich who want to pay big money for big names. If Sakho can have that impact, we'll have struck gold three times using the same recruitment paradigm. If we can do it a couple of more times, who knows how far we can go.

Sturridge is the stone cold nuts, always knew he was a class player, strange the way he was treated at Chelsea, and City for that matter, it was obviously in front of their eyes everyday.

Dunno if it was true or not but its a pity we didn't get him as part of the Torres deal, maybe that would of mean't no Carroll? things could of been really different, no worries though hes ours for his peak years now, hes one i can't see going anywhere for a long time.

Although he's yet to play in the Prem, Sakho looks like he's got what it takes to be a real success here.  Rafa always said it wasn't about buying the most expensive player, it was about buying the right player.  If Sakho fits, and we can continue the trend in the future and keep producing the youngsters, there's a nice trend developing for long term sustainability.

Big wheels turn slowly, and just a few years ago this club was on its knees.

Just hope we can continue to bring the hungry talent in.

IIRC, Chelsea proposed 35 million + Sturrdige and we turned it down. At least I heard that at the time.

Sturridge and Suarez.

If the latter comes to the party on his return, it could be a fantastic strike force.

Memories of Rush and Dalglish, in my dreams.

And in reality hopefully.

I like that Skaro.

I remember last season you said you didn't like him and couldn't warm to him.

Do you still feel like that?

Not sure. he still has a face on him sometimes and i think he's a touch greedy, but so long as he's banging them in I'll have few complaints.

I might well be wrong, but suarez turned out to be a total bellend who wants to play for arsenal so i might be right.

I guess in both instances what i'm trying to say is i find it hard to like most footballers these days including those who play for us. I look at Suarez and just think "he's a cunt".
