Report: Fabinho could be sidelined for up to six weeks

Key Liverpool midfielder Fabinho could be sidelined for the most demanding part of Liverpool’s season to date.

The Brazilian hobbled off before the 20 minute mark of the Reds 1-1 draw with Napoli on Wednesday evening.

Fabinho did not have a scan on his troublesome ankle on Thursday as they were keen to let the area settle.

But the Daily Mail says that there is a feeling within the Liverpool camp that he will out of action between four and six weeks meaning that he will miss the Club World Cup and the Christmas and New Year fixtures.

Speaking after the game, Jürgen Klopp alluded to the fact that they could lose the Brazilian for a decent stretch saying:

“That’s the biggest thing from tonight.

“It’s still early and we all hope it’s not too serious but it’s pretty painful in an area you don’t want to have pain.

Gini Wijnaldum who could well be the player to fill the hoiding midfield role in Fabinho's absence also said it was a big setback.

" It is a blow, a big blow, for the whole team, of course also for him as a player but there are situations you have to deal with.

“I think during the years we have had a few blows, in terms of injuries, and we just have to show we can deal with the situation.”

Gini is right on the money with that observation, and in a way it is better if this kind of setback for Fabinho and indeed Joel Matip happen now than in the title run-in.

Jürgen Klopp has built a fantastic squad mentality where one player comes in and plays their role such as what we have seen with Dejan Lovren.

That same opportunity will arise for Fab's replacement.

Really big blow this.

Hopefully the timescale quoted is the worst case, but Klopp does have form for understating how long a player might be out....done it a fair few times.

We obviously have no like for like replacement, but a few of the games are ones where we might be able to get away without a good defensive presence in the middle of the park.

Couldn't have come at a worse time with fixture list so packed and fact we will fall a game behind in league because of this mickey mouse shite we have to go to Qatar for - if there is a drop in results without him and with the missing a game our lead could be a lot smaller by New Year.....I feel he is that important to us now, that he makes that much difference that his loss could be very serious for us....Especially given we are going to be asking fragile players to step up/asking more of Milner who may also be needed at LB.

Got to find a way through this and it is going to be a bastard.

4 hours ago, alles ist gut said:

Klopp’s response to watching Lallana trying to play defensive midfielder against Arsenal was to move him to somewhere he could do less damage to us, and bring on Pedro Chirivella. I don’t think it happens again.

He played him three in the league against Villa when resting Fabinho

Lallana can play some games in the three, wouldn't put him at the base though, to weak. Let him play with Gini and Hendo/Milner and get forward a bit.

For me it's 2vof Gini, Henderson and Milner plus one of Lallana, Ox and Keita next month or two. Its now or never for Keita

I have a sneaky suspicion that Keita will step up to the plate. Fabinho has been ace and will be missed, but in the way we play we can replace him and Klopp will have a plan. I'd be far more worried if VVD or Bobby had suffered the same injury.

Yup, top player but it's the one area of the pitch where we have a bit of depth.    We would be much more screwed if we lost any of the full backs or the front three.   There's no one that can come in there without drastically changing how we play.
