I see Jones in the same category of midfielder as Gundogan, or De Bruyne. Not the same level, but that's the model of midfielder for that third spot, you need goals and assists and that comes with better timing of runs and more confidence on the ball, and being clever off it. Klopp seems to think he has it in him, we've seen brief glimpses of it. However, De Bruyne had time at a club like Wolfsburg to develop before getting his city move, its doubtful that Jones can replicate that development period through the odd game here and there for us.

I sigh a little when I see him named in a starting XI. That said, I think the 3rd midfielder in the midfield 3 is a difficult position to excel in. Even Gini was seen by many to struggle there, and yet we all know Gini was excellent. Same with Keita and Ox, both struggle to make an impression there. It's an odd position, it's not entirely clear what Klopp wants that player to do, it's the spare man to complement whatever phase of the game we're in, sometimes defensive, sometimes a fourth striker, sometimes just moving the ball, sometimes closing down. On that basis, Keita was the ideal player with a 'bit of everything' in that regard. Jones isn't that player.

I don't think Mbappe would cut it here in our system with the closing down. I think he's already got a pretty high opinion of himself and how he plays the game, he doesn't strike me as wanting to change that. As an aside, I think Juventus are dark horses for the CL this year. Vlahovic has given a solid team a dangerous edge.

I wonder if Mbappe noticed that tonight. Silly move if he goes there, La Liga having a bit of a nightmare, he could waste his best years.

Agree that this is the sole aim, to remind the world that Russia has powerful lats and biceps and a thick cock.
