  1. Yep, he's always looked like a good mid-table manager to me. We're a mid-table side with an appropriate manager at the moment. He's going to have to raise his game substantially, yes it's a substantial challenge facing him but that hasn't changed. He's not going to be viewed as a success for basically treading water irrespective of however many soundbites he comes out with.
  2. Just looks like a typical end of season performance from a side with nothing to play for for. Rodgers needs to be really careful here, falling away over the last seven games of the season could change the way his first season is perceived by many.
  3. That's exactly what he's doing, it's all about securing his position and buying time. Perhaps we should skip the Premiership and FA Cup next season leaving us fresh for the League Cup?
  4. In the sense that Labour spent more than was sustainable based upon expecting revenue's at the peak of a global boom to continue indefinitely, hence numerous references to ending boom and bust. However it's fair to suggest that even a Tory government would have spent considerably more during a sustained period of strong national and global economic growth. In many ways New Labour's policies were appallingly to the right of Thatcher. The fact that Labour under Blair spent so much of it's time tearing up key policy principles prior to 97 says a great deal. Their economic policy was pure neoliberal, you could get barely get a hair between UK and US fiscal policy, which is why the crash is often referred to as an Anglo-American recession. New Labour deregulated the financial market well beyond Thatcher, implemented a now highly discredited tripartite regulatory system that allowed London to effectively become the casino banking capital of the world whilst overseeing the nation's largest credit bubble (an often overlooked consequence of most Tory governments). Let's not forget Gordon Brown touring the worlds capital's crowing about his 'light touch' regulation. Manufacturing fell from 25% to 23% of national output under Thatcher, it fell from 19% to 11% under New Labour. They substantially extended privatisation well beyond Thatcher even extending it to social provision. They effectively sold off much of the NHS to private sector landlords landing us all with £260 billion worth PFI bills. Let's not forget the 10p tax or the derisory 70p rise for pensioners. The saddest death is not Thatchers but rather John Smith's in 1994. It could have been very different. New Labour in many ways implemented policies that wouldn't have formed part of Thatchers wettest dream.
  5. We've no idea what's actually being said behind closed doors. His appointment was always a huge risk but given his lack of experience it was equally going to take more than one season, he'll be here next season so that'll be the time to draw a few conclusions. Personally I don't think he's up to it, not that it's an inconsiderable task. Next season he really has to show consistent progress. Just have a feeling this is kind of his level and he'll be talking up a 7th place finish next season. Martin O'Neill's available though so all is not lost!
  6. Just as long as they have a fully licensed copy of Photoshop.
  7. Apparently this is one of the signs we need to watch out for that might lead to a serious escalation. They have closed this complex once before so it will be interesting to see if it remains permanently closed.
  8. James Richardson on the podcast tried to explain it, if you're Italian it's very normal to not view an issue, idea or historical event as a whole. Where as we would condemn Mussolini outright they might view actions and events individually and selectively, celebrating the good and condemning the bad. Hence the reason why he describes himself as a fascist but not racist. Struggle with that concept myself. It's entertainment either way. I know I shouldn't and I'm well aware of both past and present Italian fascists well deserved vicious reputation, I just still can't take them seriously.
  9. Exactly, fantastic appointment, well done Sunderland for not going down the route of appointing one of the usual suspects and instead going for a complete lunatic. It will be great entertainment for everyone and you never know he might actually be a good manager looking at his record so far. Just steer clear of the subject of politics....
  10. He clearly doesn't know how to organise us defensively.
  11. I thought he was fired, in fact we didn't even have the decency of telling him face to face.
  12. Let's hope so, although the fact that he's resigned suggests he'll be largely protected. What a complete **** he is as is his solicitor complaining how unreasonably the IPCC have behaved given that his client can no longer defend himself. His solicitor conveniently forgot to mention that if he'd been that keen to defend himself perhaps he shouldn't have resigned?
  13. Very true, it's always been this way for as long as I've been following football. However as England Manager is he getting the most of the available players he has? No one is expecting England to beat a top international side, they haven't since beating Argentina in 2002. It's not unreasonable looking at the quality of opposition in England's current group to expect them to qualify. I'd suggest that qualification for a major tournament is actually England's level and anything beyond that is a bonus. Looking at the players Hodgson has available to him compared to Montenegro, Poland or Ukraine you'd have to say England have a better and bigger pool of talent available. The campaign under Hodgdon has been floundering since the beginning and is just about to go completely off the rails. Woy's reaction will be to blame the players and to downgrade expectations. He started the latter already by suggesting that England may now have to qualify via the knock-out stages. I'm just glad he's not managing us.
  14. Yeah I don't get it, another hard working non scoring uncreative striker. He's still better than Cleverley who hasn't done anything of significance for club or country but now effectively appears to be a regular? Carrick putting in a typical unmemorable performance. I know it's a cliche, but the manc thing really is true, distinctly average players promoted above their level due to playing for whiskey nose. Ferguson really has done a deal with the devil to get performances out of them. Despite the positive spin the media are still desperate to put on Roy's reign the wheels are slowly but surely coming off, it's heading towards a 2004 qualification train wreck of Taylor proportions. I'm going for failing to even get to the knock out round by losing at home to Poland.
  15. Really poor management from Woy, he really is clueless. They've been overrun despite effectively having an extra man in the center. What does Roy do? Nothing, desperately hope they hang on. Let's face it they'll concede another.
  16. I'm coming round to this idea as well, we're pissing away so much money creating complex taxation and benefit payment bureaucracies whilst at the same time creating a divisive society as we stigmatise those on benefits. In many ways it removes the excuse on both sides, individuals truly have responsibility to do something with their life and politicians can't keep falling back on the same tired on mantra they like to trot out.
  17. Yep that's the point, the reason we haven't hit the official unemployment levels of previous recessions is due to the flexibility of the workforce swapping full-time skilled jobs for part-time often much less skilled roles. You can interpret it as a positive thing, as the right would, in that we now have a much more flexible economy. However that flexibility comes at the price of a generally lower skilled one as well. The key is to look at the stagnation and in many sectors the fall in living standards and lack of wage increases. If the current government had genuinely created all these million plus jobs since they came to power we should be seeing a significant rise in both figures. Tax revenues for the government should equally be rising.
  18. Yep too true especially given the scale of public investment into the stadium, another £60 million thrown at it by the treasury. Personally I thought the Olympics was a mad, wonderful event but the idea that we were going to see much of the £10 billion back was always fanciful. This is just an exercise in getting a permanent resident so they can claim regeneration and avoid the white elephant label. Two million a year rent as a return on a near £600 million stadium investment, only the BBC and central government could view that as a success.
  19. We've spent a £150 million gross over two years to make no real significant progress overall. That's a £150 million worth of new players brought through the door to remain 7th in the Premiership. I'm not suggesting that our current manager or that any individual is to blame but christ we've collectively screwed up. He's off, Ayre's rushed out to downplay Suarez's come and get me call.
  20. I couldn't really complain if he moved on, he's clearly better than 7th in the PL, he's carried us for large parts of this season. Personally given that he appears to be a bit of a maverick I suspect that will count in our favour and we're not dealing the just another typical top flight player. I suspect he'll be here next season at least, however if were still not looking like a team capable of gaining CL qualification by then he'll be off.
  21. Yep, appalling isn't it? She's gone out and found work related to her qualification, work is still work even if it's voluntary. What happened to Cameron's 'Big Society'? Isn't this girls attitude exactly what he was calling on us to all do? Ian Duncan Shit is one of the nastiest two faced politicians out there, he's been constantly trying to frame the two who took them to court as work shy even after the court ruling made it perfectly clear that wasn't the case.
  22. Agreed, but I don't there are many of us on here that wouldn't recognise this, if we'd been in contention for a top four finish this season but ended up finishing 6th or 7th there would still have been a recognition of genuine progress. As it is we've not even been remotely in contention for a top four all season. Next season a minimum for me is to be a genuine competitor for one of the top four positions even if we end up falling short.
