  1. Peter Thompson was my favourite player when I first started supporting Liverpool. First game I went to was against Sunderland in August 1968. Thompson ripped them to pieces. I read a magazine article at that time which said he was 'erratic' - think they meant inconsistent at times, and his finishing could be poor. He usually got quite a few goals each season (5 to 10 most years). His peak was probably 64 - 66, when he got most of his England caps, and was called 'The White Pele'. Sadly, a few years before my time. Thompson was better with the ball, but overall Callaghan was the better - he probably contributed more to the side. When the use of out-and-out wingers died out, Callaghan became a more conventional midfielder. His career lasted from 1959 to 1979, 2nd division to Rome '77. Only 4 England appearances, with 11 years between the 2nd and 3rd. My hero was Peter Thompson, but my head says choose Cally. Don't think I ever saw him put a foot wrong. If I had a choice of the two in our CURRENT team, though, I'd go for Thompson. We're crying out for someone with his skill who can take people on and beat them. He'd take the ball into the box himself, and leave Torres to do the rest.
  2. I think our defence is shaky, I've always believed we need a ball player, and we are short of strikers But if we continue to play 4-5-1, we need a midfielder who can play up front when Torres is crocked. So, Yeats, Barnes and Kenny. OR Attack is the best form of defence: Barnes, Kenny, and one of Hunt/Rush/Fowler. Opposition would be too busy picking the ball out of the net to take advantage of our zonal (non) marking. But I want Danny Murphy to play at Old Trafford.
  3. Who said Aquilani would do anything to solve our problems? £20m spent on players who could play from mid-August may have made a difference, though. We are up against it financially, but we have had a lot of money to spend, and a lot has been spent poorly. We aren't poverty-stricken, and I don't think we should begin Moyes-like whinges about lack of money. Rafa has to be more sensible with the money he gets. We can buy top-class players, but we can't afford to waste money the way richer clubs can. And the Souness, Evans and Houllier (despite 2000-2002) years are hardly the yardsticks by which we measure success.
  4. Probably the same 'EVERYBODY' who thinks £20m on an injured player was a bit of a gamble but the manager probably knows best, only to watch in disbelief as the £20m fit player stays on the bench. Probably the same 'EVERYBODY' who was delighted with last year's run-in to the end of season, knew strength in depth and over-reliance on Torres and Gerrard was a problem and watches in disbelief as we start the season with a POORER squad. Most sensible people didn't kick off at the issues you mention. There are more fundamental problems now - squad strength and the £20m on a non-player (yes, he'll play eventually: one to watch for 2010-11 eh?) are the signs of bad management. "History has fuck all to do with anything now", you say. It's over 4 years since Istanbul. Over three years since a trophy.
  5. I'd sooner win the Premiership than the Championship. If we were in the Championship, I'd want us to win it to get back into the Premiership. If we get a bit of dosh for winning the Europa Cup, then go for it. But if our injury-prone players end up missing even more Premiership games because of the burden of Europa Cup matches on a Thursday and we risk missing out on next year's CL, then play the reserves. The Europa Cup is a competition for small clubs.
  6. It was said above by Little Sammy - where's the league title in this "glorious decade of European football"? For quite a few years, I've felt European football was a sideshow to the league. I've always felt it to be secondary, and the idea, which I have heard, that things will be OK if we win the Europa Cup, is plain stupid. Let's just win every one of our League and FA Cup matches from now until May, and hope the Mancs, Chavs and Arse slip up. And play the reserves in the Europa Cup. The Europa Cup is a joke. The old Uefa Cup was a very strong competition when the European Cup was for CHAMPIONS, but as Uefa have let more and more of the 'big' clubs into the "Champions" League, even to the extent of allowing fourth-placed clubs in, then the competition has become ever-weaker. Ideally, we wouldn't even bother with it - we have enough shit with injury-prone players anyway to risk them further in a competition for second-raters. Mind you - a 5-0 defeat of Everton in the Europa Cup final would be nice. Won't happen though - they won't get anywhere near the final.
  7. Henry cheated, the linesman made a mistake. Henry to blame. And if Torres did it, we'd accept it, but, I think, all be a bit ashamed, and Torres might go down (a tiny amount) in our estimation. A lot of us were very indignant about Ngog the other night - read the various threads. As for Roy Keane - a friend emailed me with Keane's comments the other day. My response was: "He's right that Ireland should have finished off France, and I am concerned that IF it were replayed (which I doubt) France would win by about 3-0. But Roy Keane? Well, he didn't cheat like Henri did. He was a thug, through and through. I still think he should have had a life ban from football for his admission that he went out to seriously injure Alf Inge Haarland, and the way he ended a man's career like that. He walked out on his country when he was needed - forget all the bulls**t about training facilities. As much as any, he has contributed (along with all of Ferguson's acolytes) to the state of the game today, where anything goes to get a point. He's a complete failure as a manager. A total scumbag with nothing to offer in this debate." Probably a bit generous to Keane now I re-read that.
  8. Is that just to have a break from all this, or because next season is going to be better? And if you think next season will be better, why?
  9. Thought Duff played well tonight - he's better than som e we have. Thought Anelka was excellent. Never forgave Mad Ged for not signing him. Now he is worth bidding for - but the Chavs wouldn't sell him to us even if we had the dosh.
  10. I just want to see us win that title again. Not just because of the Mancs drawing level - I want US to be champions. Whatever it takes. IF (and it is a big if) that means Mourinho, then so be it. I'd like to think we could do it with Rafa, but how long do we have to wait. A year? 5 years? Eternity? We've not exactly built on last year's second half of the season performance. The two issues to me are 1) could Mourinho do it with the resources he would have? 2) would he want to come here now? We aren't in crisis (despite all the apocalyptic postings on here recently - go and ask clubs such as Portsmouth, Hull, Southampton, Leeds, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest about crises and disasters), but are in a shambles over our finances and lack of depth iin the squad - there's a fair bit of essential maintenance needed.
  11. I'm going to stay very, very cross with them, and if I ever meet them, I'll give them a piece of my mind. Bet they're worried now.
  12. I'm in two minds about Kuyt. He has some ability, but is by no means a real star (like Gerrard, Torres, Carra, and now Johnson and probably Yossi in his present form). I agree with Torres - merely running around like a demented Duracell bunny for 90 minutes isn't enough, but the very fact of that means he gets everywhere and as a result of that a) someone has to mark him and b) he has enough ability to both score goals and make them (ie he tries so hard, and is always where the opposition would rather he isn't, that eventually enough of what he tries does come off.) If I was building a team from scratch and had Abramovitch billions to play with, I wouldn't buy Dirk. I'm not sure I'd keep him at Anfield if I had a shedload of dosh either, but right now, he's far from our weakest link. If only another Dutch player had a tenth of Dirk's commitment...... The major criticism I'd make of Rafa and Dirk at the moment is that we need a backup/second striker. Dirk was bought as a striker, and should be capable of acting as such when Torres is injured, rather than leaving that to Ngog or Voronin.
  13. The rest of them are cheats, so we have to be as well. And it's our team, so we back them no matter how they (attempt to) win. Think I've summed you up correctly. And I totally disagree. If we can't win fairly, then we don't deserve to, and should take it on the chin, and not resort to cheating. And have we really got to the state where we need to cheat to get a point - AT HOME - from Birmingham City? Are we going to spend the next week or so debating the ethics of cheating, when the real issue is simply that we aren't good enough to beat relegation material.
  14. Fully agree. And it also makes me sick that we have to cheat to beat Birmingham City at Anfield.
  15. System kicked me off halfway through entering this - it left off 3. Dirk Don't think anyone played badly - Agger, Insua and Aurelio all impressed me as well.
  16. We can win it, but we have to pull ourselves together. The defence is sloppy at times, and we rarely try to thread the ball into the box - usually it's a lob upfield, or a cross sent over on the off chance that someone will get to to it. The old battering ram approach to the goal still predominates: there is rarely any finesse. But we're still well-placed, and I don't have any time for all the shite the media were talking on Sunday - 'no one's ever won the Premier League after losing three games at this stage'. Absolute bollocks - so what? A year ago, it was reasonable to say 'Burnley will never beat Man Utd in the Premier League', or 'Liverpool will never twat Real Madrid 4-0'. Of course we can win it. Will we? Err - I'll get back to you on that one.
  17. Playing for Liverpool should be enough for him. What has Holland got to do with us? I only care about Liverpool. (Owen, England, same old shit.) And, frankly, a couple of moderate performances don't cover up two years of shit. If we were rich, I'd say release him on a free now. As we're not, I say get rid of him on 1st January. Anything over £1million would be a bonus.
  18. Ferguson is the most successful British manager ever. With Aberdeen first, then with the Mancs he has achieved more than anyone else. The only thing we can take off him is the fact that in over 20 years he has only won the European Cup twice, whereas Bob Paisley won it 3 times in 9 years. But he is the best. There can be no doubt about it, and I wish that wasn't true. I have a massive amount of respect for him as a manager. And in over 40 years of watching football, I have never seen a bigger shit than that man. I can't think of a more unpleasant, mean-minded, obnoxious bastard than him. And I don't want him to pack it in until he and his team have been repeatedly and completely humiliated by us. Last April was a start.
  19. Yeah, me! Sir Roger played at number 8 - St. John was at 9 most of the time.
  20. Dunno about that, but I've spent 19 years praying for us to win the title. About time He listened to me.
