1. I'd love to see John Barnes back at the club, but some of these recent coaching roles seem very lightweight and almost like a token gesture. I think we should find a much better role than that for Barnes, as he's got so much more to offer and would be wasted otherwise. He's one of the few club legends that not only has the passion for the club, but can also speak well on its behalf to any audience.
2. I've always liked Michael Laudrup but those snidey comments have put me right off him. Not only was he factually inaccurate with the timings (as Dave pointed out), but it's also none of his business. Anyway, even if it was 48 hours later - it might have taken those 48 hours for the player to be fit enough to play. It's not like there were two games on the same day (so at the same level of fitness) and the player chose Liverpool over England.
3. I tweeted about the exact same thing. Glad it wasn't just me that enjoyed that, or else I was worrying that I was starting to turn into some sort of super-fan! :-)
4. I used to love Subbuteo when I was a kid. Me and my mates started off by playing on the cloth pitch on a carpet, but that used to cause all sorts of arguments as some clumsy fucker would always end up kneeling on your players and breaking them. Apparently, the new figures don't break as easily, but I've not seen them yet. A few of us then got big pieces of chipboard or MDF and got the astro pitches, so it was much better then, playing it on a nice flat surface off the floor. Used to polish the bases with some Mr Sheen and a yellow duster. I once even tried putting an extra metal washer in the bases to weigh them down a bit, though that was a bit sneaky! I've still got all my old kit in the loft, and as soon as I can find some space in the house to put it on a big piece of MDF, I'll be getting it all down again to play with my 6 year old son. I reckon it'll also come in handy for talking through some basic positioning/tactics for his Under 7's football too, as it's so hard to explain this type of thing to young kids, but it might start to come naturally when seeing it on a Subbuteo pitch.
5. I loved this. It reminded me of Mascherano, though I'm sure Ibe is a completely different type of player.
6. We drew the City games of course, but they certainly felt like losses! Don't you remember how Ronaldo used to hit them when he played for the Mancs? (and maybe still does, but I never see any Spanish football) He'd hit them with top spin (or some other sort of spin) and they'd swerve and dip all over the place. He scored loads of free-kicks like that and I was surprised that nobody tried to do the same (or maybe they did, but couldn't). Until Bale of course. I think Bale has tried modelling himself on Ronaldo, even down to how he stands there waiting to take a free kick - with his legs straight and apart, almost prancing. Bit cringeworthy to be copying that too!
7. I mentioned in my post that I thought it looked even worse in video than in the pictures, so guess we just have differing opinions on this. I just hate seeing goalkeepers wrong-footed/flat-footed and rooted to the spot. I like to see them looking nimble, on their toes, making themselves big, and trying to make the save like their life depended on it. I'm only being nit-picky on this (so apologies for going on about it here, but it's been on my mind for a while) as he's done it a lot in the past year or so, though he's been better recently. I'm not a goalkeeping coach, but looking at the video again, I wonder if it's good practice for him to have his hands down by his waist until the shot comes in? It's not as if he's an outfield player in the wall, not wanting to handball it! The split second he loses by reaching out from his waist towards the ball is probably the difference between him saving that or not, given how close the ball was to him (something you can see better in the Getty photo above). Frame grab below: Having his arms more outstretched would not only make him bigger (how many goalkeepers make flukey saves that they don't even know about, simply by making themselves as big as possible?), but would also allow him to get his hand on the ball quicker to the side of him by the time he reacts. Here's the gif from 101greatgoals: I agree. It feels like a goalkeeping cliche, but I always think of Schmeichel at his best for a good example of this.
8. Excellent report Dave. Agree with you about Reina for the second goal - I don't expect him to have saved it, but expected him to have looked a bit less half arsed in trying to save it. I was thinking the same thing about it being how I would have tried to have saved the shot myself - except I'd have probably stook out my leg rather than my arm. I've included two images of the goal below, though it probably looks even worse in video than it does in photos, for anyone that didn't see the game. His lack of mobility/agility from close range shots is a worry for me, even if he's looked better recently. Also, I thought he'd lost weight, but he looks like he could lose a bit more. Unless it was the unflattering yellow kit not doing him any favours (with the biggest shorts I've seen since Lennox Lewis was boxing!). Not sure if I'm reading too much into this or not, but I thought Sturridge seemed a bit 'sulky' when he was substituted. Hope that's not a sign of things to come regarding his attitude. I've been pleased with him so far though so hope it's nothing and I guess most players are a bit annoyed to be subbed these days.
9. Man Utd have just announced that he's had surgery and will miss the rest of the season as he recovers: Darren Fletcher to miss rest of season - Official Manchester United Website Unfortunate wording for the bit in bold there.
10. Completely disagree. We're talking about a 1 minute briefing of any major issues. Not a 90 minute play-by-play analysis of the match. He'll have seen most of the things that happened in the game already, but this would make sure the key talking points were covered. It takes a matter of seconds to say "Suarez didn't shake Evra's hand so this is how we should deal with it..." or "Suarez did a dive but try to shift the focus to Huth stamping on him and say the dive was out of frustration of being kicked from pillar to post or whatever..."
11. I pretty much agree with everything Randy Marsh has said in this thread. LFC have a big communications department and have all sorts of people watching the game, both in the stadium and on the TV/commentary feed (or they should have!). The manager should be briefed on any issues that come up (for or against us) so that he's not blindsided in the post match interviews, and so we can attempt to set our own agenda in the reporting. It needs to be done there and then, not a day or two later when the damage/negative headlines have already been written. If LFC are posting press releases on the LFC website 24 hours later, then it's because they've cocked-up and it's a damage limitation exercise. You can see in this video (1 min 54 seconds in) that Brendan hasn't got a clue when asked about the Huth stamp: Whilst in the other press conference, that twat Pulis is diverting the attention away from Huth's stamp by focusing on the Suarez dive (as if the media needed an invitation to stick the boot into Suarez anyway, after ignoring all the genuine fouls/penalty appeals he's had waived away recently). I think it's pretty obvious that Pulis was briefed by his own people about the Huth stamp, as I wouldn't have expected him to have came out so strongly about the Suarez dive otherwise. Same thing happened with Kenny last season when he wasn't aware that the Suarez/Evra handshake didn't happen, yet nobody told him about it or prepared him for what he might be asked about. The LFC press/communications department need to be more proactive about dealing with things like this as it's not rocket science.
12. Spearing: "What are you doing Jonjo?" Shelvey: "Just taking a picture of something..."
13. I'm a distant relation to Steven Gerrard. My Nan and Alex Curran's Nan are sisters, so since they got married, I think that makes Steven my second cousin-in-law (or something like that). Or "our Ste," since I found out about this. ;-)
14. Completely agree about Reina, Dave. Glad someone like yourself has said something. He's just so static for a lot of our goals & doesn't even bother diving. Almost like he's always flat or wrong footed.
15. I've heard they're changing their name to Jizz FM. ...I'll get my coat! ;-)
16. There's an interesting comment in the Daily Mail today - not sure if this has been posted elsewhere or not. I found it via @discuit on Twitter, when he linked to a tech blog that was quoting the Apple TV part of this article. I hope the Liverpool Club Secretary recommends someone who will do a good job next time, rather than her former boss and colleague! (I know that hindsight is a great thing...) Also, on the latest Anfield Wrap podcast, Andy Heaton said that Liverpool used to use someone from Hill Dickinson, but since FSG took over, they moved away from them in order to have a clean slate.
17. I hope Andy Carroll comes good and I do rate him. But to have a starting bid of £30m for him is absolute amateur night from a negotiation point of view. Even in a panic, we should have started at £15m & I bet they'd have then been delighted with £20m-£25m. And to then find out how long he was injured for! Anyway, onwards and upwards.
18. I completely agree with this. I don't know who runs the club's media/PR, but it needs to start sticking up for it's own and taking control of stories, instead of letting others run with with their own agendas. Ferguson might be the front man for Man Utd, but I bet his PR team are reinforcing his point to their friends in the media. The same goes for Chelsea - compare how Terry might have been caught on camera saying something, yet there seems to be more presumption of guilt on Suarez when he wasn't even caught on camera (despite the allegation he said something at least 10 times!). It wasn't so long ago that Torres was playing for LFC and getting kicked all over the place by defenders and got nothing. A bit of PR work by the club back then might have made an issue of it and we might have got more decisions. Now we have Suarez 'the diver and the racist.' It's a complete joke and needs to be nipped in the bud. Ste
19. I'm not convinced he says 'black' either. Quite tricky to tell in this clip. If he said anything racist though, I'd expect a lot of the players would have heard it & would have been kicking up a fuss. Here's a miming trick - mime the words 'elephant juice' to someone & ask them what you said! :)
20. I'm not that keen on Nicole Scherzinger's face - looks a bit like a transvestite (though the photo above is one of the better photos of her, so doesn't really illustrate my point that well!). Neck down though, she's superb.
21. There was no option in the poll for 'His bright red fucking nose' so I ticked 'his face' as that was the closest. He was a right narky bastard on MOTD last night. Put me right off him.
22. That's something I've been thinking - it always stinks down the dock road. I'm not sure what's responsible for the stench down there, but any development of that area would have to find out what and make shut down.
23. Yeah, it not as if the council are otherwise on standby to pump millions of pounds into the area (not as far as I know anyway!). I get the impression that they're hoping we're going to do their job for them and regenerate the area. I think LFC should make some enquiries with Knowsley council about the possibility of building a new stadium on some of the land next to the Academy in Kirkby. Not because I'd like to see us move there (as I wouldn't, even though you could argue a case for having everything in one place, including a new Melwood, and there seems to be a lot of land around that area), but because I think it'd help give us some leverage with Liverpool City Council. The second the council think we might leave Liverpool completely, I think they'd start to be a lot more accommodating. With all these looming deadlines, they're trying to back us into a corner and pressure us. The council currently have nothing to lose, so I think it'd be good to turn the tables on them. Ste
