  1. I remember posting on here about four years ago that I didn't think Konchesky was a bad shout for left back, and being howled down almost instantly; I then remember about two years ago mentioning the whole incident very shame-facedly and admitting I'd obviously gone cuckoo at the time. Imagine my surprise to see how many people suddenly decided he could "do a job" for us in the last few weeks...
  2. Maybe he can just sack Rafa again? After all, it's worked for him and Purslow once already.
  3. If we're speculating, I'd say trying to create the appearance of having an inside track on journalism and/or the club, plus a general desire to elevate oneself above the hoi polloi that is one's fellow fans.
  4. Agree with this. Once you put aside their reputations, none of Mascherano, Gerrard or Torres did much to suggest they were untouchable last seasons, or that we'd be finished as a club without them. The problem, of course, is that we're unlikely to be selling many players for purely football reasons from now on, and we're even less likely to have more than a fraction of the money brought in for replacements.
  5. Yep. The problem is that a certain type of fan (both on the net and in the real world) spent so long in such a state of poisonous, conspiracy-addled rage about the manager that for them, even though they paid lip service to the need to get rid of the owners, once Rafa was gone, so was the "real" problem. The realisation that the real problem is still very much with us is going to take some time to deal with I'd imagine, and probably even longer to admit to.
  6. I'm not sure I've ever met a football journalist whose take on a manager wasn't heavily coloured by whether said manager took him seriously.
  7. Wouldn't argue with any of that. Middle of the end then, I guess.
  8. Oh, for a time machine to take people back to start of the Hicks and Gillett era and show them threads on the internet salivating at the thought of bringing in Joe Ledley and debating whether we could hope to afford Scott Parker. Might have had a few protests a little quicker.
  9. I still maintain Crouch leaving was the beginning of the end of the Rafalution. We should have worked far, far harder to keep him (assuming we worked to keep him at all).
  10. I'd say that among the more easily led members of the fan base he seems to have already done a pretty good job of that. Wouldn't you?

  12. I'm pretty shocked by the implications of this thread. It looks to me as if people are suggesting that the hierarchy at the club would deliberately mislead the fans, and that a respected national newspaper journalist would help them do so. Now come on lads, I know these are difficult times, but that's hardly likely, is it?
  13. Unless we're planning on having Sammy Lee abduct him and put a contract under his nose at gunpoint, I'm struggling to think of one realistic scenario in which Cole would choose to come to us ahead of Arsenal or Tottenham.
  14. Yeah, it was towards the end of Uncle Roy's reign – according to the rumours at the time, he'd have taken over from James, with Dean Richards and Matt Elliott in front of him and Stephen Hughes in the middle of the park. God, I grew to dislike Houllier by the end but sometimes you remember what a job he had on his hands when he got here.
  15. I seem to remember the world and his wife demanding we sign Ashley Young at the same time as loudly declaring how neither James Milner or Diego Forlan were fit to wear the shirt. So on that basis, maybe we should give him a skip.
  16. You're working on the basis that the owners and/or RBS can be relied on for astute financial decision-making. In both cases, history suggests otherwise.
  17. Shelvey's a gifted boy, Danny Wilson is going to grow into an excellent defender and Raheem Sterling was a great acquisition too - but it's going to be a while before any of them are ready to do anything much in the first team.
  18. They score an awful lot from set pieces, something we clearly decided was a bit unfashionable some time ago.
  19. The issue about players leaving comes down to two things - whether we're realistically going to get any closer to finding a buyer in the near future (and indeed, if "we" really want to), and how eager the individual players concerned are to leave. Personally, I'd have absolutely no bad feeling towards Gerrard if he got out now.
  20. Yep, going by the way people are carrying on, anyone would think the club was owned by a pair of rapacious chancers who had burdened us with impossible debts in order to line their own pockets, and who were about to start selling off key members of the squad to pay off "our" creditors. Still, we'll always have transfer speculation, eh? Even Leeds can still do that.
  21. Every team above us last year is going to be strengthening their squad over the summer, while we're going to be dismantling ours. Not sure that's going to be a particularly effective way of making up ground on them.
