  1. Evans had gained experience on loan at Sunderland first in the Championship when they won promotion and then in the Premiership so you can hardly compare him to Kelly or San Jose. Also, he's hardly the third choice at United who also have Wes Brown and John O'Shea who can play in that position.
  2. From Wikipedia. Don't think that Valverde would accept a job at the academy (and there are rumours that he's being lined up by Atletico Madrid anyway) so it has to be one of the other two.: Technical Staff Head Coach:Ernesto Valverde (Spa) Assistant Coach:James Ainsworth (Aut) Goalkeeping Coach:Alekos Rantos (Gre) Assistant Coach / Fitness Trainer:Alexantro Caseres (Spa) Fitness Trainer:Jose Antonio Pozanko (Spa) Team Attendant:Petros Rigoutsos (Gre) Chief Scout & European Scout:Andreas Niniadis Gre)
  3. We bought Sami Hyypia from the same league when he was 26. Didn't turn out to be too bad, did he?
  4. Let's hope that the frustration builds up and they let rip in the league game against the Mancs.
  5. I remember reading a piece when McParland left for Bolton stating that Liverpool had been following Agger for two years and McParland even went to watch him during training to see his attitude etc. So, while we might have bought him after he made his debut for Denmark, he had been spotted far earlier.
  6. Where do I start. Futebol about Brazilain footbol is excellent. Likewise Tor about German football. Then there are Jonathan Wilson's two books Behind the Curtaind and Inverting the Pyramid where he manages to make two difficult topics (football in Eastern Europe and tactics) seem fascinating. Liverpool related, far foreign Land by Tony Evans hasn't received the praise it deserves. Non football, the definite winner has to be Moneyball.
  7. I recall reading a piece by Glanville on how Liverpool tried to warn UEFA about Heysel, how the seating was all wrong and how Liverpool even tried to buy some tickets near the Liverpool fan areas (they had done this in Rome apparently) but were stopped by UEFA. He is pompous all right, but he knows his stuff.
  8. Paraguay were the surprise package of the U20 championships and they qualified to the World Cup at the expense of the more highly rated Argentina, so it isn't simply a case of Vickery trying to pick out a player simply to provide a contrary view but rather picking out players from a side that stood out. As for Huth making it at Liverpool, he's a very good defender but the feeling is that San Jose and Kelly are better overall players. The comparisons with Paletta are spot on.

    Lucas

Saying that he's weak is one thing, claiming that he's the worst player ever is completely another. Anyone who saw Torben Piechnik will concur. The point is that many people seem to be bashing Lucas simply because it is fashionable.
  10. When have the reserves played at either Goodison or Anfield? I think that someone is telling some porkies.

Does that mean he's taking Ablett's job with the reserves or taking up the post in charge of the Academy. I'd hate to see Ablett go because he's done a very good job but at the same time McParland seems to be very knowledgeable and an all round good guy.
  12. Whilst it is true that we probably can't afford him, his situation isn't that clear cut in that Palmeiras only hold a small part of his registration. The rest is owned by a company that is eager to sell him off to Europe to cash in very much similar to the situation with Masch and Tevez.
  13. Shades of his celebration for Argentina against Mexico in the last World Cup
  14. Finnan has been injured for most of the season so the likelihood is that Liverpool would still have had to turn to Carragher.
  15. One question though: if Deschamps is so good, why is it that most Juventus players - inlcuding Del Piero and Trezeguet - were so relieved to see him go? And, if he is such a good manager how can you explain his insistence for Juventus to buy Jean Alain Boumsong (they did and he was crap in the Serie B as well)? And anyway, Arbeloa is a good player and a great find. I'd love to know what you thought of the likes of Ronnie Whelan and Steve Nicol.
  16. The rumour is that the previous reserves manager, Brendan Rogers, was allegedly told by Scolari that he would never chose a reserve team player regardless of how well they were playing. At which point Rogers took the hint and moved on to manage Watford leaving with Chelsea looking for someone who wouldn't be so moralistic about his job. Hence Redknapp.
  17. Well, Sandro Mazzola was talking on Italian TV yesterday and they were looking at Inter's potential opponents. After saying that it didn't really matter who they came across, he said that he wanted them to be drawn against Liverpool because he was confident that Mourinho would guide them through.
  18. How come Duran has suddenly disappeared. He also skipped last week's game against Manchester City. Is he injured? Was very good in the previous two games.
  19. When talking with Sons of Shankly earlier this year one of the points Rafa mentioned was that he wants to run the academy and I would guess that will feature in the contract talks. One other point: was reading an interview with Albert Riera and he mentioned that Heighway is currently one of the club's scouts. Is that really the case? Finally, the point tha Durango made about Elias makes sense: I believe that Benitez is following Dalla Valle very closely and he is perhaps Elias' best find so far.
  20. At Coritiba, is the much sought after Keirrison. The forward scored 12 in his club’s successful promotion drive last year. And after missing a couple of months through injury this season, the 19 year-old has already put away 10 goals in the top flight. Kerrison was subject to a bid by Traffic and Palmeiras earlier this year. But Coritiba wisely held on to the forward fully aware that he’s the type of player that can make all the difference. Now, Olympiakos and PSV are sniffing round Keirrison and may offer something in the region of 9 million euros. Name: Keirrison de Souza Carneiro Position: forward Date of birth: 02/12/1988 Weight: 63.0 kg Height:1.81 m Goals in the Brasileiro: 10 Taken off here: Brazil: the talent factory « Pitaco do gringo’s Brazilian football blog
  21. Tony Evans can be contacted on tony[at]farforeignland.co.uk
  22. Evans is a true red who wrote the book 'Far Foreign Land'. There's an interview with him here: This Is Anfield: Liverpool FC Fan Site - Archives » Kopblog meets Tony Evans.
  23. To be fair, they're also critical of Julio Baptista and Jeremy Menez. As you said, however, they are missing Totti. That and clubs know how weak defensively Roma are.
