Ian Wright cannot wait for the moment that the hard work of Darwin Nunez starts to regularly show on the scoresheet.
After scoring a goal on his Premier League debut away to Fulham, the prospect of a dream home debut turned into a nightmare when the Uruguayan picked up a straight Red card against Crystal Palace.
It meant any chance of building up early season momentum had gone out the window and he virtually had to start from scratch again
The big money summer signing from Benfica started to find his feet in October scoring four goals in all competitions and in the last match before the halt to the league season for the World Cup, the 23 year-old grabbed a double against Southampton.
Since the return, Nunez has scored just one goal in nine appearances which came in the 3rd Round FA Cup clash against Wolves at Anfield.
But while on paper that may look to be a disappointing return and evidence of a player lacking in confidence, in reality Nunez has never looked to hide on the pitch.
In his 16 Premier League appearances, Nunez has had 66 shots on goal with 28 on target equating to a overall shooting average percentage of 42%.
That is not even mentioning his general work rate and runs that put him in the position to score that go unrewarded at times.
One really pleasing aspect to come out of the Derby win on Monday night was the wonderful assist Nunez supplied to Mo Salah that opened the scoring.
As well as being a outstanding player in his time predominantly at Crystal Palace and Arsenal, Wright is a real student of the game as a astute pundit and podcast host.
It was on that platform where Wright was glowing in his analysis of the striker as the Echo reported.
“I feel it is going to happen for him as he is playing sensationally.
”The goal he set up for Salah [against Everton] and his all-round energetic pace and output, he is doing everything except score.
“I can’t put my finger on why someone with such good technical ability, it’s not even a case of needing to slow down before he shoots, it just doesn’t seem like it is going to go in for him at the moment.”
Being a striker of great note, Wright was able to assess where Nunez is going wrong to some extent, but he said it is easily fixable and when it is, he will be very hard to stop.
“I am desperate for him to score.
"He is trying to shoot from angles that are not good angles. Darwin Nunez’s touches at that pace are phenomenal, that’s why I am desperate for it to click. When it clicks, I think he will cause an unbelievable amount of problems.
“When it comes to strikers, I can’t help but side with them. The one I sided with for so long was Torres back at Chelsea, I had to stay with that - and I’m doing that with Darwin Nunez at the minute.”
