U21s demolish Tottenham

Liverpool's u21 side turned on the style tonight at St Helens' Langtree Park Stadium, as five different players got on the scoresheet in a 5-0 demolition of Tottenham Hotspur.

Aly Cissokho got 90 minutes under his belt following his recent ankle injury, whilst long term absentees Brad Smith and Samed Yesil also made comebacks on what was a perfect night all round for Alex Inglethorpe's side.

With Cissokho and skipper Jon Flanagan occupying the full back berths, Inglethorpe used Smith and Ryan McLaughlin further forward in experimental roles. Both have played as wingers before, but this time they were on the opposite flank to that from which they usually operate.

It worked a treat, as McLaughlin won the penalty that allowed Adam Morgan to open the scoring from the spot before getting  himself on the scoresheet when he rifled in a low cross from Smith. In between those strikes 17 year old midfielder Cameron Brannagan had also found the net when he latched onto a clever through ball from Cissokho before finishing with aplomb.

After the break Smith made it 4-0 with a stunning strike from distance before substitute Joao Carlos Teixera ran clear to score within seconds of entering the field.

Yesil almost marked his long awaited comeback with a goal too, being denied by the post after a fabulous through ball by Teixera had sent him clear.

The Spurs keeper was in excellent form and almost single handedly prevented a cricket score, making a string of fine saves to deny Morgan and McLaughlin on numerous occasions as Liverpool continued to push forward looking for more goals.

Team: Ward; Flanagan, Rafael Paez, Wisdom, Cissokho; Roddan, Rossiter, Brannagan (Teixera); Smith (Yesil), Morgan, McLaughlin (Peterson):

McLaughlin has got it in my opinion. If he doesn't get his opportunity with us I think he will still be a prem standard player.

I've always been a fan, myself, but I was very surprised to see him line up front on the left last night.  Even more surprising was his performance, which was brilliant!

I suppose credit has to go to Inglethorpe for playing two fullbacks as wide forwards on the opposite side; it worked an absolute treat and it's something I would never have thought of doing.  I still can't tell if it's just being done to round off their games, or if he thinks that might be McLaughlin's and Smith's long-term positions.  Whatever it was, they looked very, very good against good opposition last night.

They looked fucking good last night, bloody hell. Considering that spurs team were pretty successful last season that makes it pretty significant.

You could pick out at elast 5 players that made outstanding contributions, probably more.

Exciting times ahead perhaps....

I know the first team is looking down on most of the Premier League right now, but they should still be taking note of last night's performance, particularly...... pressing high & winning back possession quickly, turning up in the 2nd half!, maintaining intensity going forward for 90 minutes.

Both Smith and McLaughlin are tailor made for the system we are playing.  Two very talented players.

Totally agree with this. They are both quick, technically good and sound defensively. If they both stay fit we will be covered in the full back positions for the next 10 years.

I was also hugely impressed with Rossiter and Brannagan in the middle. For two players so young to basically run the show is incredible.

It is hard to believe Rossiter is only 16, scary the maturity he shows on the pitch, it is great to watch.  He seems to step up through the ages without a problem.

the problem is we don't have time to try them out because we need to play in the CL and we have to use "proven" and "international" and mature players like Cissokho, Johnson, Enrique and Kelly, but I do agree, McLaughlin and Smith are ace + Rossiter is a fucking huge talent. I mean HUGE. Add Chirivella to that, who plays exactly like Busquets but is only 17yo

Have you seen Chirivella play, Moloch?

I ask because I'm very interested to hear what type of player he is, but I don't think he's lined up for us apart from maybe a friendly thus far.  Aren't we still waiting on his international clearance?

I've seen him play a couple of times, yes. He's got everything to compare him with Busquets, his passing is a joy to watch and reminds me of Alonso, his short passing is pure Xavi (I know, I know. But it really IS). He makes all the "triangles" in midfield, his understanding of the game is terrific, he doesn't really need to tackle hard because he reads game so well. I love how he communicates all the time with defenders behind him, telling them where he's moving so they can cover the space - if u want to be a proper DM you have to talk all the time to your defenders and he does it.

He is strong, quick, has hell of a strike and can do really well when pushed forward, but it's his intelligence which really stands out, such elegant and smooth player. When we bought him from Valencia and their famous La Macia academy, they went really mad because he was considered their brightest prospect since 10+ years. He was on the verge of joining Barcelona in 2011 but opted to stay in Valencia. Him and Rossiter - when well guided - will be absolutely stunning for us and have their midfield spots reserved for 2018/2019 or something. The kid is special and will be a world class player, hopefully in Liverpool.

The best of Alonso, Xavi and Busquets, all at 17?

Fuck the 21s or 18s, get him in the first team.

I know, it sounds overhyping as fuck, but I really don't do it very often and Chirivella is a fucking majestic talent, watch him play when you have a chance, lads.

+ Rossiter plays for u21 at the age of 16, Chirivella will be too

Look forward to seeing him then.

Rossiter is ace. As is McLaughlin. I'm hoping Dunn pushes on as well; seems to have stagnated. Although he's only 18 so maybe I should cut him some slack.

I'd like to see him get a chance soon instead of Sterling playing at right wing back.  I'd like to see what he has to offer over Wisdom at right back too, who's just a centre back really.
