1. Bolton crushed QPR at Loftus Road 0-4 in the first game of last season. I remember the pundits during the week afterwards wondering whether they might challenge for a spot in Europe last season.
2. The sad, short answer to the thread title question is this: money. It's unfortunate, and I admire FSG for at least rolling the dice with Rodgers (and of course I hope they're successful), but I'm slowly coming around to the idea that until we're bought out by a rich billionaire who wants to throw money at our problems, we're unlikely to ever win the league. Unlikely is not the same as won't, so I'll keep hoping in my heart that we find a way to do it, but I honestly wonder if a team that isn't in the top 3 or 4 in spending can do it any more. Especially without the CL we're miles away from winning the league, and at the present moment we're miles away from the level it would take to get into the CL.
3. As an honest-to-God Bolivian, I can confirm that the Liga Nacional B is a total joke. My Bolivian team, Jorge Wilstermann, finished third last season and they are beyond hopeless. I know that sounds like a joke (the part about me actually supporting a team from that league), but it's true. I just decided to post when I saw the league referenced, as it's not an every day occurrence on here. If you think Liverpool have come down somewhat from the glory days, think of this: Wilstermann used to have Jairzinho, and now they play in the Liga Nacional B.
4. I don't think Kacaniklic is going to go on to be someone who could play in the first XI of a top 4 team, but he would have been a useful backup or someone we could have developed a bit and sold for 3 or 4 million. Say, the Danny Guthrie level. What's criminal about the whole thing is the way we let him go, not the fact that we did. Fulham were already asking an exorbitant price for an extremely limited player, and not only did we agree, but we threw in two promising youngsters with the deal almost as a freebie. Sort of, "You want Dalla Valle and Kacaniklic too? Meh, sure, why not?" From the moment we made that deal for Konchesky you could see that Roy was going to be a huge failure.
5. Best windup ever. It is a windup, right? Please, please tell me that's what this is.
6. Obviously nothing like that is going to happen, but what really gets me is that I can't see any chance that we could even take a chance on getting someone like Cisse or Ba. There's no one on the horizon with even a chance of turning into that kind of purchase for us, and it's depressing because we're crying out for it. I know we don't have the money for a guaranteed-success like Falcao, but at least we could take a shot with a van Wolfswinkel or an Alcacer or someone. I suppose the Assaidi thing might give us all some hope that we might pull one out of the bag without the media catching wind, but I reckon that was a one-time deal. I can see us ending the summer by missing out on Sahin and Tello and concluding our business with Dempsey, and it's just a bit depressing.
7. Good to hear that Soldado turned down Spurs the other day. With Rondon also telling them no, they really look light up front. I was really hoping they would be the ones to waste 15 million on Fletcher, but I guess the chance for that has gone. Maybe they could still redeem themselves by picking up Rhodes for some inflated price? Which sort of brings me to my point: if Carroll did go and we had money to bring in a top CF, there aren't a lot of good options out there, are there? Damiao would presumably be too expensive, and no one else jumps out at me as an option. Perhaps our scouts have another Assaidi-like player in mind.
8. This is down to Rodgers and not the owners, IMO. They obviously promised him an improved role with the first team, but then Brendan put that notion to an end when he came in. Really hope that whoever is brought in to run the academy can keep up the progress that's been made. The difference between where the academy is now and where it was when Segura came in is unbelievable.
9. Not often I agree with you but you're spot on here. Does my head in how often people on the internet will be seriously analysing the latest tweet from "FootballAgentForRealz" or "LiverpoolITK" or similar. If anyone over the age of 18 has a twitter account with "agent" or "ITK" as part of the name, then they're not intelligent enough to possibly have anything to do with our transfer dealings.
10. I understand that with such a massive forum it's probably a bit harder to mod than someplace like TLW, especially as they desire a more professional or accessible forum than what we have here. What I don't understand is why they go about it the way they do. All they have to do is issue the warning at the beginning of the thread (no unreliable sources or abuse, what have you) and then give people temporary bans when they break it. Simples. It would take 5 minutes, the muppets would see what was happening and rein it in a bit, and everyone could get on with their lives. Instead, they choose to post a complaint in response every time someone goes the tiniest bit out of line, or rather even approaches the line. Then, after two or three people post in response to the first person or to the mod who called them out, they lock the whole thread. Which of course just makes everyone frustrated and then go over to a new thread and post the same bollocks. The problem is massively exacerbated by who they appoint as mods. As shown a few pages back Pheeny in particular is a man who shouldn't be in charge of putting the drinks in the trays at McDonald's, much less moderating an internet forum. He's a massive man-child with some truly embarrassing habits of banning those he disagrees with. Oddball is somewhat better, but he likes to whinge about it first which just fans the flames rather than putting them out. I just don't understand why they can't pick reasonable human beings to moderate and then ban the mongs instead of locking threads. It would fix about 70% of their problems with two simple steps.
11. Exactly. How many times have we seen this post: "Our scouts should be bringing in these players from smaller clubs for 5 million rather than waiting for them to go to Ajax or Napoli and then costing us 20 million." Now we've done exactly that, which seems to me to be good business. Certainly little risk involved, and if he comes and is a decent squad player for us it will look brilliant.
12. This video is an every-touch compilation of a match against Olympiakos, giving a better sense of his true strengths and weaknesses than just a highlights roll: Must say, watching that, he does look a bit like Yossi, as per that description a page or so ago. Maybe a bit pacier, but some of the same over-dribbling problems. Looks willing to track back and a decent player.
13. Don't know why I'm even bothering to comment on a "player review" from someone who seems to admit in the first few sentences that he's never seen him play, but from reading that he sounds a lot like Benayoun. A 24-year-old version of Benayoun who works hard in defense and costs 3 million and 21k/week? That seems like a proper bargain to me.
14. Cazorla will be like replacing Fabregas; I really rate him. However I've always thought Podolski was poo, and expect Giroud to outscore him easily. I still think they'll beat us to fourth, but I'm delighted to see van Persie leave as now it might actually be close if we have a bit of luck. If Song goes as well I might start to wonder if we have a chance at it.
15. Well, this is probably not the main reason we're bringing him in but Sahin has played at LB for Madrid. He would make a good emergency backup there in case of injury to Enrique or Robinson. I think we're OK in defense now, though. We could possibly do with an upgrade for Coates or Carragher, but it's hardly a crisis. We have: Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique for a first choice back 4, and Kelly Coates Carra Robinson as backups. Throw in Flanagan and Sahin as possible fullback backups and Wisdom and Sama for a cup game here and there and I think we're fine. It's nowhere near as pressing as up front, where we basically have 4 senior players for 3 positions. It's obvious why the remaining links we're seeing are all for players like Tello or Dempsey who can give us depth up front.
16. If it were for the whole season then Hyypia is the obvious answer. But, since Agger is healthy for this Sunday and I doubt Allen will start after just a couple of practices with the squad, I'd take Alonso. ............... Reina Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique ............Alonso Lucas ................Gerrard ......Downing Borini Suarez
17. Hank, why are you discounting injury/rotation completely? We all know that Gerrard has played 50% of our games (can't recall if this is the last season or two seasons), so right there there's probably 25 starts for Sahin, even if he's just being rotated with Gerrard/played when Gerrard's injured. Then Lucas and Allen won't play more than 35 times each, so that's another 30 starts for him. Obviously, he won't get that many as Henderson and Shelvey will also start some, especially in the cups, but there is plenty of room for a fourth top CM to come in and get a lot of minutes. He'll end up getting 30 or so starts in all likelihood. We can argue about who is in the first XI: Lucas, Allen, and Gerrard, or Allen, Sahin and Gerrard or any other combination, but none of it matters. Having 4 top quality options for those 3 spots can't be anything but good. I actually think he'll end up at Arsenal and make the whole debate moot, but I'd love to see him here, and I don't think it would be at the "expense" of Lucas, Allen, or Gerrard.
18. I was harsh on Coates but I went back and watched the first half again and I'll hold my hand up and say I was wrong. Didn't put a foot wrong that half, and had two or three good clearances/interceptions. I had thought he should have stepped up into Sam's path for their goal as well, but on rewatching it there is another attacker off to his right and he couldn't just leave the man all alone, so he did well to split the difference and cover the right side of Pepe's goal. The mistake was Carragher's in the end, though even that is a bit harsh given the quality of the finish.
19. Because he's going to have a midfield of Khedira, Alonso and Modric, and then Sahin would be competing for the leftover minutes with Ozil and Diarra. Sahin is too good to be sitting on the bench especially at this stage in his career. If it's down to us and Arsenal for the Sahin loan, as the ITKs would have it, then I'm not sure he'll come here, but if he does it's a brilliant deal. Gives us 4 top quality CMs for 3 positions, allowing for a bit of rotation and injury cover. Then you have Shelvey and Henderson behind them, who shouldn't disrupt our new style of play if they come in, either. And, best of all, it allows us to sell Adam, and maybe Spearing as well though I'm less arsed about that.
20. Usually agree with you but not here. If he'd broken his ankle and we pulled the paperwork they'd have no recourse at all. I can understand why they said no.
21. The team we had out there in the first half was very good, but the whole pass-and-move thing falls apart a bit when you have players like Adam and Spearing (and, to a slightly lesser extent, Henderson) in there. Very reassuring to see Allen coming into the squad; hopefully Gerrard, Lucas, Allen and Shelvey will get the majority of the minutes in our midfield this season. If the rumours about Sahin are true I'll be even more relieved; that would be a quality midfield indeed.
22. Wow. I know we complain about Newcastle getting 35 million out of Comolli for Carroll, but how are City fans going to feel in a few years when they look back and realise they gave Everton 40 million for Lescott and Rodwell? I know, they probably won't care as they'll have another league title or two, but those are two atrocious deals.
23. Are you talking about Cole? Joe Cole? The one rumoured to have the third-highest wages on our squad (maybe; I'm guessing here that Suarez' new contract means he earns more than Cole)? I wouldn't count two as a "raft of others," especially when the other two in Gerrard and Suarez are amazing players and key parts of the squad. Cole is another example of our utter ineptness in the transfer market the past 2-3 years. If we can get him off the wage bill for free, we should snap someone's arm off. Even if it means going into the season with Sterling as our 5th forward, though I'm sure we'll be bringing in at least one and probably two more forwards, so I doubt that would happen.
