  1. My low expectation at the start of the season was based on the fact that journeyman manager Roy Hodgson - yes read it and weep - Roy Hodgson was in charge of first team affairs at Liverpool Football Club. If that's not a fucking crisis then I don't know what is. Added to that paticular gem was the fact that the club was on the bones of its arse and world class talents like Xabi and Mascherano had been replaced by older, inferior and cheaper substitutes. It was never going to end well as far as I was concerned and at this particular point in time I see us scrapping for 10th with the shite.
  2. Very low. Was absolutely convinced that Hodgson was the wrong choice from the day of his appointment added to the facts that we had so many players at the WC and a tough start to the League - especially away from home. Having said that I never thought we'd be getting beat by the likes of Nothampton, Blackpool and Stoke though and despite having almost zero expectation we still haven't lived up to it. If I'd have know that the ownership issue was going to be resolved by mid-October I'd have been a happy man though and I'm cautiously optimistic that things will get better over the mid-term.
  3. Kiev beats anywhere in Turkey as far as shitholes are concerned and in my opinion Bucharest runs Kiev a close second. But knock yourself out mate - hope you enjoy it!
  4. Place is a fucking shithole and me and the lads I normally go with are jibbing it.
  5. Very common for Spanish players to have buy-out rather than escape clauses inserted into their contracts and the article does refer to a fee of £20m. Given the events of the last 15 months I'd be upset if Reina and Torres weren't pissed off with the way things have gone and it may be that we have to lose them and take a couple more steps backwards before was can start to move forwards - a last kick in the bollocks off the previous regime. Obviously the crucial aspect of the whole thing will be CL qualification - which if Torres can get himself 100% and stay fit - may not be such a pipedream as seemed 3 weeks ago given the inconsistencies of last year's top 6. Torres himself is the key to our whole season and if his personally is anything like last year's I think we can kiss hime goodbye. Either way we definitely need to see some positive acquisitions in the January window before hopefully making a real splash in the summer with a couple of top notch players. I still personally think the manager is a massive stumbling block with regards to both the lads being fully settled here and a young offensively minded coach to work with the Director of Football Strategy has got to be the priority for NESV.
  6. The Springbok for QPR was always a belter. Love to see them in the prem as it was always the best London game for me.
  7. Nothing wrong with purple lad. Anyway, the spins just finished and they're on the radiator as we speak. Bring on rent boys! Think we should give it plenty of John Terry's Ma on sunday and if that doesn't impress our visitors from Beantown nothing will.
  8. Wouldn't want to get carted off to the hozzy wearing them but they're doing sterling work of late. Wore them for Blackburn, Bolton and last night so they're currently 3 from 3. Just taken them off after a fortnight and put them in the machine so that they're in pristine condition come Sunday.
  9. He's just walked into the Midland with chips and a fishcake complaining about some cunt in the Lobster Pot. Off to the Liffey on Renshaw St next cause he's heard happy hour runs from Monday through till Thursday.
  10. Lance the next night she was there with a couple more brasses and followed us back the hotel with a little gang of lads in tow - again about 4am. Must be my magnetic personality or something.
  11. Planning on 3 o'clock for a few pre-match beverages and a scran. Are the Neapolitan hordes currently in Rapid getting tooled-up? Should I pack a copy of the Yellow Pages down me kecks or is it the usual Italian case of the shithouses staying at home and letting the innocent take the rap? On a serious note there may be one or two flashpoints as the afternoon wears on - anybody know if the Plod have any particular plans for our visitors.
  12. For God knows how long - every man and his dog have been barking on about how we should be signing young players and giving them a go, developing them ourselves etc etc Now it looks like - in accordance with NESV's stated policy - we might be bringing someone into the club who has a decent track record in this very area and some people still aren't happy. If he can come up with a couple like a few of Wenger's early purchases (Anelka & Vieira to name but 2) he may well do the trick. Either way I see it as a positive move and better than handing the kitty to Royston.
  13. Give the lad a break. He might have some strange ideas about the game but it takes all sorts. I'd like to see the first XI for this one to put the group to bed but I don't think its going to happen.
  14. American history for me particularly the Indian wars 1850-1890. Keen on historical novels as well with my two favourites being Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield and The Far Pavilions by MM Kaye - neither of which are about the American Indian wars 1850-1890. For anybody not familiar with the books Gates of Fire is about Thermopylae (its a rasper) and The Far Pavilions is about the British Raj and contains a cautionary tale of why invading Afghanistan is not a good idea.
  15. With regard to yesterday and in the context of the season to date the result was all important and has to supercede any concerns about the performance. Unfortunately the overall quality of the squad at present is suffering from two years dis-investment with world class players like Alonso (weeps) and Mascherano being replaced by cheaper inferior options and as others have noted our remaining world class talents are suffering from a chronic loss of form not helped by the managers questionable tactics - particularly in hanging Torres out to dry up front. Hodgson has been responsible for some truly awful decisions in his 10 minutes here and whilst Poulsen and Koncheskey are widely quoted the decision to not even take a look at technically the most gifted player in the squad in Acquilani was utterly incomprehensible. In the short term I would like to see our first eleven play against Napoli in order to put the group to bed although with Chelsea on the horizon that is probably a forlorn hope. Presuming we put out a similar team to the one we fielded in Naples we may just scrape the win but I cannot see us getting anything from Chelsea. Time to go Roy. A new manager, a left back, a winger and a second striker asap please John W.
  16. Maradona Cruyff - Johan Van Basten Beckenbauer Platini
  17. Lucas - some lovely passing first half Maxi - I've seen a thousand Liverpool teams better than this one take the field but the feeling when that went in was exactly the same as it always was. Up and down the steps like a lunatic and much hugging of strangers etc. A big 3 points for us with the rent boys in town next week. The Greek - You get the feeling he'd run through a brick wall if asked - love the attitude.
  18. Don't know about steadying the ship - Royston is more like Captain Pugwash. Off to the boozer now and then coach up to Bolton - will log on tonight to see what everybody makes of this afternoon's shambles. Come on you Redmen!
  19. The header at Highbury was in the last minute or so as well. Made for a good trip home. I've seen every right back we've had since Chris Lawler onwards and Nicol was probably the best allround footballer although purely on the defensive aspects of the game I think Rob Jones would run him close.
  20. Not saying either Coyle or Di Matteo specifically but a young coach of that ilk under Kenny would be the way forward as I see it.
  21. Half decent article for once from a grade A gobshite.
