I looked into this a bit more. Botman and Van de Ven were both in the Netherlands preliminary World Cup squad, as were other defenders whose names I didn't recognise. One was from Leeds, Stuijk or whatever, is he a CB? Schuurs has only been called up once, in 2020.

Yeah, that's pretty much nailed it. There's no good reason not to sign a CB. Waiting for certain player/s doesn't cut it and is a disaster waiting to happen. They've had enough time to come up with a realistic solution.
