  1. could be, but that is not Canada :P and would be institutional there as well - the 1967 Olympics had empty cement trucks rotating through the big stadium under construction there allegedly. Corporate.
  2. Its definitely not that case here in Canada - tradesmen may or may not ask for payment off the books to avoid tax, but what you are talking about is not done here. Are thinking of places like Egypt, India etc with baksheesh and maybe Chinese style corruption - I think that the argument could be made that in those countries the corruption is everywhere, whereas in the West its more at the institutional level. ie police coverups etc.
  3. Or, it could be looked at as, Suarez, if sold will mean money spent on another striker to replace him, Reina, great keeper, however, starting to lose it and we can replace with one with better stats, Carragher, retiring replaced by another senior pro with experience - plus - hidden in amongst all those youngster and low cost signings is one or two more Countinhos. Point is, you see what you want to see - I see an overall upgrade happening with or without Suarez.
  4. Or, looking at it a bit more positively, unloading a player on high wages who, while having a decent last year, is unlikely to get better and could be replaced by a younger guy who can improve and yes at lower wages. Wasn't that long ago when I was reading comments lambasting Pepe for losing his game.
  5. well - in that case you can say that it drops to the bottom line - however there may or may not be any profit - what if there was a huge loss otherwise, and the "windfall" only partially offsets it? that was my point, a windfall does not mean there was profit overall. If I was the owners, I would be looking forward to that TV money as well - revenue is the lifeblood of all business and adding sources cannot be a bad thing. The numbers being bandied about lately for the upcoming season are mind boggling. I hope FSG is happy - and reinvests based on that happiness with their investment.
  6. Actually - you aren't right either. ( I am a CA) I suspect that the accounting for sports clubs may differ a bit from business, but here goes - Revenues = income from all sources such as marketing ticketing , and TV and commercial as above. Variable Expenses = expenses associated with games such as staff provided for security at games, players salaries etc. There may be another line for the profit or loss on players sold after amortization of their acquisition cost over the life of the contract. The net of all of this is merely gross profit, or profit margin. There are still the costs of being LFC to account for = overheads such as office salaries and the tea lady - any of those costs incurred not directly attibutable, or affected by operations per se. The bottom line after all that is profit or loss. so the fact that there are no costs associated with TV revenues leads to all or maybe mostly all, of the net going to gross margin, or gross profit, not net. It might flow all the way through, my guess is that there are still some additional costs associated with the revenues, although minimal as you have said - so you are right on the effecf, but wrong on definition. Sorry if I am being pedantic, but I think there is a lot of misunderstanding out there of the basics, and therefore comments on whether we made or lost money on players, for example, are in error.
  7. or the household version - man who slide down banister backwards, gets sliver, by crackee.
  8. I appreciate your opinion, but we are not done in the market yet, there is still ridiculous money chasing established players over 24, and we don't know whether Suarez generated funds will be available either - keep your powder dry for a while.
  9. You seem determined to have a moan here - we aren't done with transfers yet are we? If Suarez stays we have firepower - if he goes, we buy more firepower - seems to me that a higher salary will offset lack of CL and if it does not, then there is not much we can do except buy the best youngsters that we can.
  10. No, I said that you be hoping we could, whereas the day's reality was different and required... never mind. I understand the moan, not happy where we are either. However, if you can't acknowledge that the club has no sugar daddy sheik and has to do things a different way and choose to draw conclusions that may or may not be correct, then you are going to be unhappy for the entire rebuilding effort. Look, if Suarez wants to go, he is going to go - we will just make the best of it. You could have said the same thing about Torres leaving, and, oh, it was Suarez that came in wasn't it?
  11. is that what you are doing? fighting for what you want? - seems like pissing and moaning to me. And guess what, ownership and management aren't listening anyway. No, you would be the one convinced that we would win with a charge of horse calvary, whereas the Spitfires take time to build. Clearly seeing reality and what is possible is not resignation to mediocrity, its good management, no sense hand wringing about what might have been or who is leaving etc. - concentrate on what is, and what is attainable within the resources at hand. I think that is what management is doing.
  12. Glad you weren't in charge during the second world war :whoops: You'd be supporting FC Liverkuesen - there is no "reality" here - he's not gone and if he does go, there is no saying he won't be replaced with another version of himself. Furthermore, I don't see how him wanting to go (if in fact this is the case) translates into us being an unambitious team - its him wanting to go not us wanting to sell him and given the resources at hand, I think the owners and managers are showing ambition with the signings since January - lets wait and see what they do with the cash if in fact he does go, shall we?
  13. these little comments or asides aren't the least bit funny. You need to get a bit more exposure to the world around you.
  14. I think it's wrong to slag Lucas when he plays in a system where the centre backs split wide to allow the outside backs to push and his role is to drop into the gap - his passing gets us started from the back and is usually on the ground and wide and hard to, say Johnson. similarly, comparing him to Alonso is unfair as well, as that was a counter attack team with Torres up top whereas Rogers wants build up and possession. Most of Alonso's passes were longer and in the air. Lucas can be criticized for pace and having to foul in bad areas as a result, but scoring and the type of passes he makes should not be an issue - I think he is giving Rogers exactly what he wants in that regard. We will see if there is an improvement next year in the physical side of his game - as I have mentioned before, recovery from knee injuries can vary from miraculous to never.
  15. I like Lucas - I also just had my knee assessed by an ortho who told me that a very high percentage of acl injuries never recover to 100 percent including pro's who put in all the rehab work. Further, surgery leads to the beginning of arthritis in, again, an alarming percentage of those with acl injuries. I was told that perhaps I should have surgery at 23 when I did it, but there was no guarantee that I would have ever recovered to 100% (I not not have it and have played rec with a brace ever since) and would have started to show arthritis maybe by 35! We should always hedge our bets.
  16. I agree with this - I also think that if additional revenue is required, there is less cost associated with increased efforts in marketing the club in, say Asia, and growing broadcast revenues and sponsorships, than there is in bricks and mortar. Having said that, it is usually one step at a time with corporate owners and they will stick to their plan whatever it is - I think, and hope that there is an expansion of Anfield in those plans. Otherwise there is upward pressure on ticket prices.
  17. Bingo! I think it's more about what you get right and how quickly you rectify (if you can) what is wrong - and Rogers has done that with Carroll and done well with winter signings. lets see what he does this summer.
  18. Just seeing Chelsea finish a 0-1 win over MU - cheered me up a bit. The defence ruled today to be sure. Mayes set up defensively and we had a lot of pressure put on the receiver of balls played forward. That said, a LOT of the passing was crap, poor weight on short balls, passes played over the line or throw ins, absolute shit decision making etc. Deffo missed Luis today, but Sturridge needs to look in the mirror a bit. Passed up some good shooting opportunities, a bit greedy in low% chances, but mostly, not enough effort.
  19. Patience Funnee - a years' worth of development can be huge for young players and they do not all develop at the same rate either. The main thing is that they are working in an environment where it works for the type of player that they are, technical players with an eye for a pass. Who knows for sure where they are at 23-24? All I know is that I would rather be giving them the chance than, say, Carroll.
  20. A very pertinent observation. Lets not jump to negative conclusions - if we can add a couple of players of quality in the summer, we might look back on this as a useful rest period for a very busy player. He doesn't get injured so this will serve to swerve burnout.
  21. I agree - what he said in a more clinical context (rather than a fan's ) has to be right - you can only put a foot forward so far at a time. It's not like the glorious past has made life easier for anyone has it? Fans have one eye on the past, ex players too. How has that worked last 20 years? Nothing to lose trying new approaches.
  22. Truth hurts I guess - criticize all you want, wanting him sold is over the top shit - you just don't like being called on it - I would say that you are the one who thinks he knows best - yes he played poorly, yes there are times when he plays defence better - but as others have pointed out his attacking play is his strength and maybe with a little more help from the defensive two his strengths mean more to us than his weaknesses. What ever - carry on as you see fit.
  23. That may well be the case, but that observation makes you a better analyst than supporter - I suppose that is just the way it is with forums, but I think that when we talk about the "modern" fan or sky generation, having the ability to unload immediately after a game results in this. Everyone is disappointed after a loss - even if you thought that about Johnson before the game, he has had better games defensively and you are knee jerking. Sorry, nothing personal, everyone is doing it to some extent.
  24. Really? 4 wins followed by a poor game and this is the type of support our team and players get? I don't think he was good either but jeezus there are precious few players ever who have or had the consistency you "fans" demand. When you are all finished crying take a good look in the mirror - the team needs better support than this.
