this is the moneyball question isn't it if they do want to acheive 4th this season then they haven't bought enough/the right players - our squad is still behind Spurs and about equal with Arsenal just cos we finished well last season that doesn't detrqact from the fact that the squad needs a complete overhaul - some of which we have begun - but we are far from the finished article bottom line is that we need to spend again in Jan to gaurantee 4th - especially to land a commanding centre back and a right winger

with Gerrard coming back it makes selecting the right formation even more important imo Lucas does not have the skill to operate on his own as the only sheild for the back 4 with 2 more attack minded players ahead of him in a 3 he needs to be paired with someone - ie Adam or Gerrard (Hendo gets benched for me with Gerrard returning) whatever anyone else says i think Carroll needs to play in order to re-discover his 'talent' and Saurez roams behind the strker in the 'Gerrard' role of old - so therefore if we want to play Gerrard further forward it would have to be right of the attacking 3 - given Downing will be starting on the left ------------------Carroll ------Downing----Saurez----Gerrard ---------------Adam---Lucas does Gerrard want to play out there tho? and is it a waste of his talents? ideally we would have Gerrard and Adam as the midfield pair - much like i expect Cappello to pair Gerrard and Wilshire for England when both are fit and ahead of them we'd have Downing, Saurez and the mystery right winger who never materialised i still have no idea why we bought Hendo when we did when we need a pacey right winger more

Andy Carroll needs Kenny to take him under his wing and for Kenny to make him feel like the greatest player on earth - that's why we bought him right cos Kenny sees that in him - otherwise why spend £35m on him? those 2 goals against City last season showed what he can do for us and i thought that him getting a full pre season under his belt would the key to him coming back stronger but something is not quite right mentally with him - whether it being his drinking issues or injury or whatever - anyway benching him is NOT the way forward he needs game time!!
