I can't help thinking that Britpop killed NME and MM more than the internet has. When Oasis, Blur and Pulp were in their pomp, the music press had bands that they genuinely rated who gave extremely entertaining press. Put Oasis on the cover and circulation tripled. Since interest in those bands has waned, the press have consistently tried to overhype any old crap in a desperate attempt to create a buzz around a band. This totally neglects the fact that a Pistols, Smiths, Roses or Oasis comes along once every 6-10 years. Their circulation was falsely high ten years ago, and I can't help feeling that if they got back to what they did best 10 years ago plus - gobshite journalists who, while impossible conceited, were entertaining, opinionated and owned more than 9 albums - they would have higher circulations when the next great band does emerge.
