  1. I do hope so. My biggest complaint of the series (and I say that as an unabashed fan) is I'm not entirely sure Connolly knew himself where it was going for a while. In fact I would go as far to say it appeared, at least to my eyes, if there was a original plan this was ditched after Black Angel. There had been so many hints in the early books that Parker himself might be something other. This seemed to reach a real culmination during that book and the supernatural element was finally coming to the fore. What actually happened in the next few books seemed to me a rowing back on any conclusions and more than a little treading of water.
  2. I didn't want to mention the Collector, well you can guess why, but absolutely with you there. Just about finished up with Red Sister, the new Mark Lawrence book. Without looking back a few pages to be sure I think it might have been you that first mentioned Lawrence. This one concerns the coming of age of a gifted child. Yes, it's a well worn tale done countless of times by many different authors but there is a reason for this. When it is done well it's hugely gripping and very satisfying. In this case Lawrence doesn't disappoint. Lastly for those who might be interested John Connolly is presenting an hour long programme on 6 Music this Sunday at 13.00pm.
  3. John Connolly - A Game of Ghosts Both started and finished this today. Not something I often do these days which in itself tells you something. Without wanting to give too much away it is a little different to previous books. The unstoppable force of vengeance that Parker so often personalizes is largely missing from this outing as Connolly has him playing catch up throughout most of the book. Also, and unusually, the antagonists - at least the ones in this world - are just a little bit incompetent compared to some of the foes he has faced in the past. This isn't meant as a criticism. I still thoroughly enjoyed it. In terms of the series as a whole the supernatural elements which have been playing a more prominent role in recent books continues here and we get a few more hints where this might be all leading. Only small hints though, this is John Connolly after all.
  4. American Werewolf in London has just finished on Film4. I can remember the very first time I watched this. I was 10 years old and it was the very first time my parents had let me watch an 'adult' movie. Came away absolutely thrilled and more than a little chuffed that my parents thought I was old enough to watch it. Rewatching it now and it is still a very good film. Undoubtedly up there among those other classic 80's movies. So many good parts. The Slaughtered Lamb scene, Jenny Agutter, the dream sequences, Jenny Agutter, the werewolf transformation scene, Jenny.............
  5. I haven't seen this evening's episode as I generally save them for a Saturday viewing but I have to concur - the first three episodes of the new season have been fantastic. Definitely a step up from last year. I'm going to whisper it but I think it might be supplanting that other historical series with Danes and Saxons. It most definitely has a more coherent storyline and plot.
  6. If you think the letter to the BBC is bad what about Bill Cash's suggestion yesterday that we remind the EU negotiators that the UK wrote off half of Germany's world war 2 debt in 1953.
  7. Iron Fist- not sure how to rate this. It's certainly no Daredevil that's for sure. Not help either by a dull lead and an origin story which feels very dated in this day and age. Still it has some nice touches. In particular the brother and sister whose character's complexities are interesting to watch and I'm also finding myself enjoying the conflict with the Hand. Unfortunately the show has other problems. It's never going to be what I term as top tier television but just as I think that this is an ok series there is some clunky dialogue, or a clumsy scene between actors, which quite frankly jars rather badly. I think what I am trying to say it is a bit of a mess. Not a terrible one but a little bit of one.
  8. I haven't got round to this yet for some reason I can't remember now but I have read his second trilogy The Red Queen's War. Very good. Different protagonist and story but set in the same world. In fact I believe there is a moment when paths are crossed albeit very briefly between the two sets of characters.
  9. Good read here on Article 50 if anyone is interested in some of complexities involved. http://www.politics.co.uk/blogs/2017/02/15/everything-you-need-to-know-about-article-50-in-five-minutes
  10. I took it up to initially quit smoking. I have thought about stopping vaping but if I am honest I enjoy it too much. In my mind it is one of my luxuries like a nice glass of red wine is too.
  11. Up and until the weekend I've been using the Kangertech mini tank. Before fitting a new coil this month I soaked it in hot water and aside from the gurgling it's been pretty much spot on. However I just don't trust it not to go back to the sticky mess that it has been. Prior to this last coil change it got so bad I had to stick a tiny piece of cotton down the middle of the coil to at least stem the flood of juice. That worked but you have to replace it several times over the lifespan of the coil.
  12. Meant to add to this yesterday when I saw Walk On's post. I got the Nautilus X tank myself over the weekend. So far it hasn't leaked, (and when I say that what i actually mean it's pretty much impossible to as the air hole is on the top of the tank), there has been no spit back and no gurgling worth talking about either. Can't stress how happy I am to forgo the need for a tissue in easy reach in case it has leaked again and also not finding a puddle of e-liquid on the coffee table when I get up in the mornings is always good. It's not perfect however. Small tank (2ml I believe) and the flavour while it isn't terrible it isn't anything special either. Might see what other coils are available for the tank.
  13. There are three factions in the Expanse - Mars, an UN controlled Earth and the Belters. The first two are the big hitters while the latter group has no official recognition and is struggling for independence from both Mars and Earth. The main plotline of the series appears to be a conspiracy where a unknown party is causing further instability between the factions to the extent where all out war might break out. There are also hints of something else going on or rather the conspiracy is about more than just destabilizing the solar system. As for the series itself it's nice to have a more realistic view of space and exploration. When I say realistic i don't mean it would hold up for five minutes with an astrophysicist but it's not your space opera style of sci-fi either. Someone has at least done some research on the problems and issues involved in space flight. On the negative side it's super slow and on a personal note I am finding myself struggling to warm to any of the characters.
  14. Talking of the nuclear deterrent this is still funny.
  15. Been meaning to put some recommendations are up here for a while. If I get time will add some others latter in the week. First off is the Merrily Watkins Series by Phil Rickman. On the one hand I want to say that this series shares similarities with the Charlie Parker books. Each book has a central mystery linked by a murder and a supernatural theme. The latter is mostly subtle. While there are characters who wholeheartedly believe in the supernatural or occult for the reader it's not so clear cut. There is also a reoccurring cast throughout the series who either offer assistance or hindrance and sometimes both. On the other hand I know how well regarded John Connolly's books are regarded on here and I am loath to say if you like his books then you will like these. For one thing the evil in these books is much lower in key than in the Charlie Parker's novels. Nor will you see the action sequences or levels of violence that you expect with Connolly. When there is trouble here there is no hitman and thief to be called upon just a semi retired plant hirer and a folk singer - this is Herefordshire we are talking about here. Lastly the pace is much slower. Too slow for some I would imagine. In fact I would go as far as to say it's one of those series that might take two or three books to adjust to the pace and to get to know the cast. Or in all despite these reservations if you enjoy a good mystery read I would still recommend them.
  16. One of the few artists whose lyrics I actually find myself resonating with. Not saying this is necessarily better than the original but I've always had a soft spot for this version.
  17. No necessarily about Corbyn but a good article about what it wrong with the current status quo. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/sep/08/britain-civilised-mafia-state
  18. Installed it a few weeks ago. The only problem I had was Onedrive overwriting folder permissions on every startup. Found out the hard way after discovering an evening of game play had not been saved - there were a few curses flying about the house after that. Ended up uninstalling Onedrive though even that was not straightforward (microsoft does not provide a process to do this on 10).
  19. Are you selling it anywhere else in the epub format? Or for those in the know how easy/successful is it to remove DRM and convert?
  20. Some of the points put forward for the case of having a nuclear deterrent would be more persuasive if it were truly an independent one. Unfortunately while the subs certainly are, as too the nuclear warheads, the missiles(which includes their maintenance) and the guidance system are not. What this actually means in practice is a little unsure. A lot of speculation out there as to whether we could fire the missiles with or without permission from the Americans. What is certain is the whole shebang could be shut down in a few months if the US pulled out. Personally 100 billion pounds in my mind is a lot of lives transformed/saved now if spent on the British Public. Having an nuclear deterrent and pretending its independent when it isn't is just us pretending we are still a world power when we haven't been since WWII. It's a vanity I could accept if there were not so many things wrong with our country which could do with the financial boost.
  21. The Sunday league team I played for had four Gillingham youth team players (one of them broke into the first team at 17 before breaking his leg and then again the following season ending any hopes he had). Another five players played in a variety of non league youth sides. Then there was the goalkeeper and me. We were shit.
  22. Don't know about now but when I was working in a pub sky rental was based upon the band you were in for your rates. So both claims are entirely possible.
  23. Found this today when reading stuff about the man. An interesting life for sure. From Peter Jackson’s DVD commentary: “When I was shooting the stabbing shot with Christopher, as a director would, I was explaining to him what he should do… And he says, ‘Peter, have you ever heard the sound a man makes when he’s stabbed in the back?’ And I said, 'Um, no.’ And he says 'Well, I have, and I know what to do.’”
