Olympic duty could see Salah miss start of the new season

Liverpool could be without Mo Salah for the start of the new season with Egypt set to name him in their preliminary squad of the Olympic Games in Japan.

The 28 year-old is one of three over-age players named as part of the squad for the African nation with the delayed global sporting showcase taking place between the 23rd of July and 8th of August.

The Mirror says that timeline will see the superstar miss part of the Reds pre-season campaign and at least the opening game of the Premier League season.

The Egyptian Football federation have not contacted Liverpool to this stage but they have due for key talks later this month.

Egypt U/ 23 coach Shawky Gharib confirmed this as well as the selection of Salah in a statement.

“Salah is currently one of the most important players in the world and it’s normal to call him for Egypt’s Olympic squad.

"We will start the official talks with Liverpool after the international break in March."

With the season that Liverpool have had in terms of key absentees, Jurgen Klopp will be hell-bent on starting the new campaign with as strong a team as possible and you can guarantee there will be a fair bit of pushback from the club on these plans.

Regarding the future of Salah at club level, there is often speculation that he may look for a new challenge with Real Madrid often mentioned.

However Klopp knows how pivotal Salah to the fortunes of the squad and remained rock solid in his view that Salah is not going anywhere.

“It's just a bit awkward when I have to praise my own players, which I like to do to be honest, but especially in Mo's case, the numbers speak for themselves.

"Mo is not only a goalscorer, he has developed as a footballer as well.

“He is a very, very important player for us and hopefully he will be that for a very long time of course."

Egypt still pushing this shit.

They and Salah need to be told to fuck off. No preseason, likely quarantine and missing the first game of the season before they take him for another month in January for the ACON.

Really need to spend this summer with that fucking tournament fucking things up again

It is fucking ridiculous.

Players are clubs employess...clubs very, very highly paid employees.

There should be no way the fucking Olympics or any other international shite can take them away from their employers when those employers have games scheduled.

It needs the top European clubs to actually do something meaningful for once and stop FIFA, UEFA and other confederations calling up their players.

People will say the players want to play internationals but if the clubs made a united stance and blocked it, probably pay them enough, international football would whither on the vine.

UEFA are shit scared of a breakaway European League and them losing the Champions League is the reason why they are coming up with these ideas that the top clubs play in it without qualifying.

I sometimes wonder why the clubs dont exert the same pressure regarding internationals and sending their players off, sometimes to no mark managers who dont give a fuck about the players' clubs and make players play when they really shouldnt be.

I despise internationals, probably more than most - i fucking hate them, utter utter shite....but in summer  and with the scheduled breaks (even though they are taking piss now with 3 games in 7 fucking days as opposed to the 2 it used to be) i suppose we just have to accept they exist.

But when it means the clubs who pay their extremely highly paid employees and assets wages can't field their players for games because they are pulled off playing internationals instead then something is very, very wrong.

That shite needs stopping.

Give Egypt a choice. He either plays in the Olympics or the AFCON. Not both. Let them choose which is important to them. I highly doubt FIFA can punish us if we block him from playing in the fucking Olympics.

We absolutely can be punished. They're allowed to call up over aged players - it doesn't need our approval. It's a fucking joke, there's no need for football at the Olympics. It's not like the Olympics is short of sports. It's not like football is short of international football. If the Olympics was the pinnacle of a footballers career, I'd not only be ok with it, but I'd expect FIFA to make the Olympics part of the calendar and sacrifice some of the other international shit that goes on. FFS England played San fucking Marino this week. Tomorrow they play Albania. What's the point? Just bin these stupid, relentless and meaningless games and if they want to make something of the Olympics, they can for all players, not u23s plus our lads. That Afcon needs fucking off too and fitting in with the rest of the calendar.
