All this stuff in the papers about the rivalry - heard it as well in commentary on Sunday - is just nonsense. They are an irrelevance, the footballing version of Ben Johnson. All the joy they feel at winning things will be forever tainted with the knowledge they bought it and never earned it. Sunday was the first time I have just shut off football and focussed on something else. What’s the point in getting engaged in the game, seeing everything for your team going perfectly (manager, recruitment, trophies) and then realise that as your team is running full tilt, Ben Johnson is cantering alongside you with his veins pumped full of cash waiting for the time where he will pull away again safe in the knowledge you can’t keep up. Even in the times when we were dominant in the 70’s and 80’s and then United in the 90’s and 00’s you felt there was a chance and that teams could compete. Since the original Oil Cheat(TM) bought Chelsea, the game has lifted it’s skirts, pulled down it’s knickers and taken a right fucking.

Potter seems a nice guy and a good manager but I remember the same things being said about Eddie Howe before Bournemouth were relegated. And make no mistake, if results went against Brighton he would be shown the door. There’s no loyalty in football for Managers. If I was him, I would take the Chelsea job as it would set my up for life with the anticipated payout in 12-18 months time.

I think it may be a bit of both, trying to pace the season and poor form. We have definitely looked undercooked since the start of the season.

I can’t imagine a world where we said “let’s play within ourselves and drop 9 points in the first 6 games so we are steaming by the end of the season”. We’ve just played poorly, something that was not expected given our performance in the Charity Shield.
