To be fair Nasa put a helicopter on Mars and we could see high definition photos, that was pretty pioneering. It was ok in the space race - virtually unlimited funds and test pilots/astronauts were expendable. That just wouldn't go now. Looks like the new space race will be fought by private companies with some national involvement. Plus, space is really fucking big and really fucking dangerous. Humans just aren't meant to be in space for a long time, or on other planets. The technology doesn't exist to make it work.
