  1. Doubt Babel will get a much better chance than this.
  2. Portsmouth have strenuously denied receiving any approaches for Jermain Defoe and Glen Johnson. England international Johnson is reported to be a January transfer target for Liverpool, with a £9million move said to be imminent. It has even been claimed that the full-back visited the Reds' training facilities prior to Christmas in order to acclimatise himself with his potential new surroundings. However, Johnson is now considering legal action against the national newspaper which ran the article, with Pompey's executive chairman Peter Storrie at a loss to explain where such stories have come from. Outrageous "We have had no approaches for any of our players and that includes Glen," he told The News. "I know that his agent has taken this story up with the newspaper and is pushing for an apology. "Glen is livid, everyone is, it's an outrageous story. "To say we have had a bid for him is a lie, it's just silly season." Exceptional Storrie has also dismissed claims from former Fratton Park boss Harry Redknapp that Pompey have received a 'massive' bid for Defoe. Redknapp's current employers Tottenham, as well as Aston Villa, are believed to have enquired as to the striker's availability, but that is as far as the matter has gone. "We have had a tentative enquiry about Jermain and told the club concerned he was not for sale unless it was for a very, very big offer," added Storrie. "As with any of our players, obviously if an exceptional offer came in, such as that for Lassana Diarra, we would consider it, as any club would. "But no-one has made a bid." 3. Anyone knows how this Butchmann lad is doing? Remember him scoring a great goal on his debut but haven't heard much of him since. Personally, I do like Eccleston, two brillant feet this lad's got.
  4. Very good first half performance from us, possibly our best so far this season. Only bad thing is the scoreline being only 1-0. An early second half goal would be perfect especially with them likely to get Davies on. And, btw, surely Dossena is off in January now.
  5. Pretty much the same attacking line-up as against West Ham, not exactly one to inspire a lot of confidence. Personally, I wouldn't have mind Yossi instead of Kuyt, not that much difference between them imo but ffs not both.
  6. Hit, nail, head and all that stuff. Unfortunately, most people won't get that tho. I mean I do get frustrated meself when we keep up with one striker in games where we are clearly lacking enough players in the box to get on the end of crosses, but ffs we hardly put in any crosses today. You do bring on another striker when the supply is there but not the finishing, but certainly not when the supply itself ain't here, if anything in that situation you try bring in a player who can possibly provide that supply before introducing your striker, which is what we tried to do today. But well, I guess that's why supporters are supporters, and managers are managers.
  7. Well, of all the one points we've taken this season I guess it's probably the most acceptable one. Although, it would have been a no-brainer had we won at least two of our recent home games.
  8. Keane Insua Agger Well, look like I'm the only one but thought Alonso was poor today.
  9. How the fuck was Arbeloa a no need buy? We had only right-back at the time and that was Steve Finnan. Try re-memorising the facts, we sold Kromkamp on the last day of the summer transfer window convinced that we were going to make a deal for Lucas Neill, but somehow that one fell through and we found ourselves hoping that Finnan doesn't get injured till January which luckily for us happened. And, don't tell me Darby, coz' that was two years back and he was still with the under-18s and nowhere near ready back then. Then, January came and we tried to revive the Neill deal once again, saga which went on for about three weeks before he finally decided to snub us, which forced us to find an alternative, and that was Arbeloa on the last day of the last day of the January transfer window. Now, I don't know how you will be trying to paint a different picture probably including Degen, Finan, Darby or whoever in there, but here we are talking about Arbeloa and the fact is in no way, but no way, was he a no need buy.
  10. The thing tho is so do the mancs, and they've never had that favourable a second half a season.
  11. What? Alonso, along with Dossena (but that's another matter) did his best to slow down the game, always taking a couple of touches and wanting too much time getting his head up, added to the fact that he was a few times dispossessed back to goal giving Hull the opportunity to counter-attack. It was clear that we would have done them if we kept the same tempo in the second half as we ended the first, but Xabi partly cost us the game by trying to be his usual slowplaying italian-type of playmaker. He was no bad on an individual basis, but the tempo being slowed down was the worst thing that could have happened to us from a tactical perspective and he contributed largely to that.
  12. If there's one attitude you shouldn't adopt when chasing a league title, that's it.
  13. As long as we have players like Kuyt and Benayoun, who needs about three touches before deciding to shoot, upfront, I'm afraid there will be many many more of these home draws. Alonso is ace in these italian-type games but he really does struggle when the tempo is as high as it was today.
  14. Just got to hope the second half kicks off at the same pace the first half ended.
  15. We played with two upfront against Stoke and West Ham, can't say it helped us that much. This "4-4-2 is more attacking than 4-2-3-1 or whatever you call it" is one of the biggest myths in the game, in particular when you take our case. People would probably say it's more offensive it were Kuyt and Keane upfront rather than Gerrard and Keane, but that's just not the case. The only difference is Kuyt is originally regarded as striker and Gerrard a midfielder, but anyone who just spend some time watching our games a bit closer would have seen that they play in exactly the same position that is off Keane. Unfortunately people would still call Kuyt a second striker and therefore the formation a 4-4-2 while Gerrard will be considered an attacking midfielder and thus a 4-2-3-1, but the fact is on the pitch it's the same damn thing with both dropping off, the difference being only in people's minds. That said, I really don't like Kuyt upfront. Would have much preferred Keane, against Blackburn we seemed to be playing without any striker at times.
  16. I don't know who said that Kuyt is a better upfront than Keane, but we've just never ever had a good game with Kuyt on his own. He can hold up the ball, maybe but he just can't make runs in behind the opposition defence. Keane's finishing has been poor, no doubt about that, but at least you know he's going to create chances. And Benayoun, ffs, how many times have you seen him get into that position but never able to take the shot. Very disappointed in Alonso as well. For someone with his passing ability, he desperately lacks a cutting edge to his game. He just never tries any through-ball behind the defence (not just this game), always these diagonal balls towards the wings, which look good yes, but of which nothing comes out of. I guess it's not his fault that our wingers can't deliver but he still should be intelligent enough to see when these sideways are clearly not working. And what was he thinking with this mid-height backpass to Reina.
  17. Like Kuba, he would be a big improvement on Benayoun, got good vision and a good shot. However, he always manages to get his Harry Potter look-a-like of manager on his back for never tracking back, so it's a bit surprising that Rafa would like to spend that much on him.
  18. "I can guarantee we aren't going for Michael Owen,'' Benitez said. Don't know how reliable that is, but surely they can't make up quotes. But, anyway never ever believed Rafa was going to be interested in a Owen type of player anyway.
  19. Once again "there's a fine line between belief and kidding yourself"....
  20. Sorry no consolation for me. If anything it was just the proof that we are not good enough to stay there for too long. It's just obvious that there are going to be more games like this. The thing is people should try to see beyond their nose, Man Utd has had the toughest first half of the season you could have dreamt of (us, arsenal, chelsea, spurs, villa, everton, city all away). I think this is just about a list of all the tough games in this league and they've had them all away, the second part of the season is an absolute gift for them. And, the funny thing is given they win their game in hand and we lose at the emirates which is by no means impossible, we may well find ourselves on exactly the same tally of points as them at the turnaround. There's a very fine line between belief and kidding yourself, just got to warn you it can be extremely painful when you're brought back to earth as I was today.
  21. Probably gonna get slaughtered for this, but I would get Ngog on in place of Keane. With the amount of crosses we are being allowed to put in we would be much better with some aerial presence in the box. This game is just passing Keane by at the moment, but can't really blame him for it, clearly not the type of game he enjoys.
  22. Don't like the look of this team to be honest. There's just no pace whatsoever in our attacking line-up. I've been saying that a few times, but if I'm the manager of the opposition team, I just play a high defense line, and I've got almost nothing to fear about. Gerrard is the only with any form of pace in there, but I just can't see Rafa letting him break forward freely from a centre-midfield position, especially with Alonso and not Masch alongside him. Luckily for us, some of the managers in the premiership can be good man motivators but completely clueless tactically. Bruce was the only one who did what I said above and they totally outplayed us in the first half, but unfortunately for them everytime they went into the lead, they just backed off unconsciously, when there wasn't any real danger. Just got to hope West Ham do exactly that today.
  23. Seconded. Our game is crying for a targetman at the moment, much more than yet another striker whose strength is breaking offside traps. Surely, there must be one quality targetman out there, that Milevskiy looked good against Arsenal, or even as someone said above Drogba.
