reading this thread and watching the news it seems many people in this argument are confusing 'private sector' with the upper echelons of the financial sector not everyone who works in the private sector is rolling in millions, far, far, far from it my pay has been frozen the last 3 years and during that time we've been constantly in fear of further redundancies without the ability to strike or withhold services to protect our jobs... in short, we (the ordinary working man) are all in this together

using Mata as an example, maybe he would cost less than Downing but maybe he has decided he only wants to move to a CL club? in which case, he could be £5m and we still couldnt get him, whereas while Downing might cost more he might be open to a move to us its not just about the money

agreed, especially if his wages are the rumoured amount

not being in the CL may mean we have to 'make do' with the best of the rest i.e. players like Downing, Henderson and Parker for example. Anyone in the 'world class' or 'world class potential' brackets will have options to move to teams that are in the CL. Hopefully we can tempt one or maybe two players above those levels with talk of the LFC project like Suarez but we have to be realistic
