  1. I love all of the Flasman novels. Fraser's historical research was absolutely exhaustive and anyone looking to learn about the Victorians and Empire could do worse than starting with one of his books to set the scene for themselves. Did you see the film they made in the seventies with Oliver Reed and Malcolm McDowell?
  2. And died of exhaustion in Bootle Town Hall, I believe.
  3. Anyone trying to homeschool kids at the minute should take a look at Amazon's kindle site - one of the sections they have there is a load of free books for kids. Another has a load of books for a range of subjects (mainly Maths and Science) for age groups from infants up to a-level. I've not long finished Alistair Reynolds' third Revenger novel and can recommend it to anyone on the lookout for some Space Opera. I'm not far into Empress of Forever, which is kind of a female Flash Gordon/Star Wars SF romp that's not too bad. I've just started one of Norman Mailer's books, Fire on the Moon, about the Apollo 11 mission. It appears to be mostly about himself so far, though.
  4. Goodnight Mister Tom, Shadow of the Minotaur, Kensuke’s Kingdom, Stone Age Boy, The Water Tower, Storm breaker, When the whales came. These are books I’ve read with my year 4, 5 and 6 classes the past few years.
  5. We're going to Stavanger next week and are heading down to Bergen for a night while we're over. Any recommendations from people who've been there?
  6. The hunchback is really his wife and child and by killing them he's become the Anti-Christ.
  7. Saw Logan for the first time last night. Felt pretty much the same about it. Much better than the other two though. Great to see Eric La Salle.
  8. David Bowie, Elvis Presley, Graham Chapman, Stephen Hawking, Shirley Bassey, John McTiernan, Kim Jong-un, David Silva.
  9. I try to make sure the homework I give my year 5s is research based - generally on topics they choose themselves (the Mary Celeste, Bonnie and Clyde and funnelweb spiders have all been recent presentations delivered in class) or as preparation for upcoming topics. It works really well and the kids get to use their skills meaningfully, rather than just through completing bloody worksheets etc. that then have to be marked. Our school also has a policy of expecting the kids to read at least five times a week. The impact upon the children whose reading is completed regularly is very much apparent when we're writing in class - through sentence structure, vocabulary choice and so on.
  10. I've still not gotten round to reading The Fireman. Am currently rattling through A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay, which is an awesome novel of Satanic possession.
  11. I can confirm via a Guardian webchat Q&A that along with Vicky McClure, John Boyega eats beans on a fry up. Woody Harrellson refused to answer the question.
  12. Scarface itself was a remake. Edit: should read a bit further down before answering.
  13. Wilko do beer making kits for £12. The Pilsner is rather good - you get 40 pints of the stuff as well. I've a batch that'll be ready come half term. Can't wait.
  14. Being reported on Twitter that he's to be indicted.
  15. The Delta Force 6/10 - first time I've ever seen it but seeing a sick, old Lee Marvin in his last film was just sad, really. Blade Runner, the Final Cut - 10. Wouldn't be surprised if it's not long until another edit will be available, making this the Penultimate Cut but still as amazing a film as always. Think it was so good as it's been years since I watched it last. Really want to play the old PC game now.
  16. Can't wait for the film of all this, although am upset Leslie Nielsen won't be available to portray the star.
  17. Tony, if you want to get rid of your money that badly, I'll take it mate.
  18. Jason Starr's Tough Luck is a pretty good book. Love Stark's Parker novels. Darwyn Cooke did a couple of really good comic adaptations which are well worth checking out. I've not long finished The World Walker which I enjoyed, reread It which is just amazing and am about a third of the way into The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet. Up next are The Stone Man and Sleeping Giants. Might also have a read of Brian Daley's Han Solo novels. Not read them for a few years and they were always amongst the best Star Wars spin-offs for me.
  19. Anyone go to Laces Out today?
