  7. BBC SPORT | Parry given betting integrity job Outgoing Liverpool Football Club chief executive Rick Parry has been appointed to chair an expert panel on sports betting integrity. The panel will comprise representatives from the industry; police, players, fans, governing bodies, the legal profession and the Gambling Commission. They will be asked to ensure current rules are sufficient and how to identify suspicious betting patterns. A clear set of recommendations have been requested within six months. Another aspect in the panel's work will be the education of sports men and women on the issue of sports betting corruption, and improving communication between the relevant parties involved in tackling it. "I am delighted that Rick Parry has agreed to lead this vitally important work," said sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe. "His expertise in the nation's most high profile sport, along with that of the other panel members, will give this project the impetus it needs to tackle sports betting corruption head-on. "We cannot be complacent and need to act now to prevent this becoming a real threat to the integrity of sport. "There are some complex issues involved and this is by no means an easy task, but I have great confidence in the panel and I look forward to hearing the recommendations." Parry, who is leaving Anfield this summer after 12 years at Liverpool, added: "Integrity and sport must go hand-in-hand and anything that threatens that bond of trust has to be stamped out. "I am confident that we can build on the work already done to ensure we have the toughest possible approach to corruption - protecting and preserving the reputation of sport." The panel also includes Nic Coward, chief executive of the British Horseracing Authority, Darren Bailey, FA director of football governance and regulation, and Mark Davies, managing director of Betfair.
  8. South Africa: Egyptian Football Team Theft At Hotel During Confederations Cup, Ahead Of World Cup | World News | Sky News The Egyptian football team has fallen prey to thieves during the Confederations Cup tournament in South Africa. The players returned to their hotel in Johannesburg after their 1-0 victory over Italy on Thursday to find that cash and other valuables had been taken from their rooms. Striker Mohammed Zidan said a number of players had reported money and other items missing, thought to total thousands of dollars. Team officials have reported the theft to the police and Fifa has confirmed the robbery. The incident will be an embarrassment to the South African authorities who are keen to play down crime concerns surrounding the nation's hosting of 2010 World Cup. The Confederations Cup, where Brazil and Spain are among the other teams competing, is seen as a dry run for next year's big event. The local organising committee is already facing criticism over the transport facilities for the eight-nation tournament. Some spectators have arrived late at matches because of delays at the park and ride facilities near the stadia. Fifa President Sepp Blatter has also expressed concern about the number of empty seats at some of the games. The World Cup organisers insist the "teething problems" experienced during the Confederations Cup will be corrected by 2010. God help the world cup

  11. Liverpool Echo.co.uk - Liverpool FC - News - MPs bid to topple Liverpool FC owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett CITY MPs have launched a fresh bid to topple Liverpool FC’s American owners. They want the government to pull the plug on a crucial £350m loan to Tom Hicks and George Gillett – by taking advantage of the part-nationalisation of the Royal Bank of Scotland. MPs said the move, prompted by fury over the apparent collapse of plans for a new stadium, would force the Americans to sell. A parliamentary motion was tabled by Walton MP Peter Kilfoyle calling on the government to “ensure the Royal Bank of Scotland does not renew that credit facility at the end of its current term”. Backed by West Derby MP Bob Wareing the motion was first tabled last autumn. The new attempted “coup” comes at a crucial time – because the Liverpool loan expires on July 24. Mr Kilfoyle said: “My concern is for the regeneration that is planned for the area around the new stadium which will not go ahead unless it is built. “At the current time there are a lot of conflicting demands for that money. “That means it could be lost altogether because the stadium seems to be as far away as ever.” Mr Kilfoyle accepted RBS was still an “autonomous” organisation. But he added: “The government has a great deal of influence, because it is the majority shareholder.” Hicks and Gillett announced a one-year delay to the Stanley Park scheme last October. Since then, the Anfield crisis has worsened with the revelation of a £42.6m loss, mainly because of interest payments on debts taken on to buy the club.

  16. Rafael Benitez today confirmed Daniel Agger is close to agreeing a new contract at Anfield. The Danish defender's future has been the subject of speculation for many months, but a deal is now close which will ensure the 24-year-old commits his future to the Reds. "It is very close," confirmed Benitez today. "We are just waiting on the small details but it is nearly done. We have to wait a little bit longer but we are very close. "He is very happy here and I have always supported him. Hopefully it will be done." Benitez also brushed off speculation in this morning's newspapers linking Javier Mascherano with a move away from the club. "I was talking with Javier earlier and everything is okay," he added. "He is really pleased here because he knows the fans love him. He can't avoid big clubs asking about him because he is a top class player, but he is very happy here." Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard has overcome a groin strain and will be available for this weekend's clash with Newcastle United at Anfield.
