The actual football is an irrelevance at the moment, and commenting on it feels like a waste of breath - that said, if we carry on like this, it's not the most unlikely scenario that we'll still be in the bottom six at Christmas.

How can I be optimistic after that?

Broughton and Purslow - where are you?
Moschops II replied to Hareymonster's topic in FF - Football Forum
People find a lot more than that for season tickets. In terms of the long term future of the club, I know which I think would be money better spent. -
Got to love the usual suspects frantically looking on the bright side of this latest fiasco. I expect there'll be something positive the day we move into a groundshare with Everton as long as Purslow and Broughton are involved, eh?

Liverpool lose out on bid to sign West Ham striker Carlton Cole | Football | The Guardian Sunderland made the biggest splash, Manchester City finally recouped some money for Robinho and Birmingham City helped take this summer's total spend towards £350m. Arguably the most significant development on transfer deadline day, however, was what did not happen at Liverpool. For the second successive season Liverpool have been left over-reliant on the form and fitness of Fernando Torres having failed to improve cover for a striker who has suffered two injury-plagued campaigns and, as Roy Hodgson conceded on Sunday, is not fully recovered from the knee problem that impacted on his World Cup. The Anfield club made a belated attempt to wrest Carlton Cole from West Ham United yesterday, having considered previous options over recent days, but several offers were unable to convince the Hammers to sell the England international. Liverpool are believed to have offered Lucas Leiva, the Brazilian midfielder, and Ryan Babel, their Dutch international forward, in exchange for Cole but neither player wanted to leave Anfield for Upton Park. Babel reportedly travelled to London via helicopter in anticipation of a deal only to eventually Tweet that; "I'm going no where. LFC all the way. YNWA!!" as the clubs failed to agree on a valuation for Cole. With PSV Eindhoven's Ola Toivonen priced out of Liverpool's reach, and Bayern Munich refusing to release Mario Gómez even on loan, Hodgson will have to make do with Babel, David Ngog and Dirk Kuyt as cover for Torres until January. The failure to sign a much-needed striker means Liverpool recouped more than they spent in this transfer window, another indication of the financial restrictions under the co-owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett, and this after convincing Torres and Steven Gerrard to resist any overtures for their signatures in the summer.

Oh well, at least we don't need to worry about our oversized squad anymore. Or ever winning anything again.

If the manager was still Rafa Benitez you and the rest of the gang would have filled 315 pages on here talking about how Mascherano hadn't been made to feel wanted and how it was all down to terrible man management. Cuts both ways, as always.- 423 replies

The puppy-eyed devotion to Martin Broughton you get on here just leaves me aghast. The fact is, what he was (supposedly) here to achieve simply hasn't been achieved – and while we can keep on extending him the benefit of the doubt indefinitely if it makes people happy, there's equally nothing going on to suggest that he's got the club's best interests at heart or that, even if he did, he's got sufficient power to do anything about it. Seeing people licking the balls of this corporate flunkey because they like the fact he helped get rid of the last manager is wearing a bit thin. But maybe that's just me.

Sorry, can someone clarify for me – is this actually Steven Gerrard?

Raul? Let's not. Litmanen? The most gifted player we've had at the club in the last 20 years. Everyone knows that.
-
Tsk, you and your "conspiracy theories", aws.

I find it very difficult to believe he's going to leave, given that several regular posters here have stated repeatedly that he's going to stay. Can't he see we're moving in the right direction now?
-
No, some people are just aware that even if you think Hodgson is the perfect manager for us and Cole is a great signing, the future of the club is still hugely uncertain. Patronising people on the internet doesn't change that.
-
The lukewarm water explanation is that we are being softened up, but only for the loss of Mascherano – the club may well feel there's more attachment to him than there is, and it'll be a particularly touchy story for them as Rafa will be the buyer. The manager made a comment a day or so ago about Reina, Carra, Gerrard and Torres being a great spine for a team, so they do seem to be slowly airbrushing Masch out of the picture already.

Sorry mate, I think you wrote "Dennis Bergkamp" when clearly you meant to say "Jari Litmanen."
