  1. Been dipping in and out of this thread since the beginning and thought about chipping in but never seemed to find the time till now. First of all I have to admit I have no African based albums in my collection, very few 70's ones and even fewer live records(not a fan of them if I'm honest). So on this basis this didn't seem to be the best place to start but I goggled it nonetheless. First impressions; I have no idea how much or little this was cleaned up from the original live performance but if this is indicative of what was actually heard they are a extremely tight band. Secondly there was a lot of jazz and funk, at least to these ears, and also stepping on what I personally call musical wankery. That is where each song gets stretched and various instruments get their moment to the fore and allowed a minute solo or so. Normally I don't mind when a track on an album gets this treatment but when every song follows the same path I can struggle. On this occasion, however, when it sounds this good I think I might give it a pass. Certainly bookmarked it for repeated listening. That's a thumbs up for Mook's choice from me. Side note wasn't keen on the last song not because it wasn't a very good drum solo but because it didn't sound like it was part of the original performance (which if I understand correctly it wasn't).
  2. Will they also cast a female to play the male monk in order to confuse a lot of young boys.............
  3. There are five other books (and another waiting to be released) in Ben Aaronvitch's Peter Grant series and they are all pretty good. If you get through all that lot you might be ready for a change in genre (and location) but if not the Kate Griffin's Matthew Swift series is another to look out for. One other worth mentioning is Mike Carey's Felix Castor series. He might be better known for his run on the Hellblazer and Lucifer comics or the book The Girl with All the Gifts (which was made into a film fairly recently) but his tales of an exorcist living and working in an alternative fantasy London are enjoyable too.
  4. The reason American washes it's chicken with chlorine is that that hygiene standards are in the main much lower than in Europe. There is a preponderance of harmful micro-organisms than found in European chickens. They need to wash it with something sufficiently strong enough to make it fit for human consumption. There is also the suspicion that it can be used to disguise the actual age of the chicken and is passed as much fresher than it actually is. I think I read somewhere that even after the chlorine wash American chicken was found to have four to five times the level of salmonella than our own chickens. I'm sure Fox knows this but he's a cunt what do you expect.
  5. Not exactly scary more odd but in my previous house my dog would stop suddenly, hair bristling at the neck (basically tense as fuck), staring into the corner of the room. Odder still it was always the same corner, away from the street, and we never once all the time I lived there had any problem with unwelcome vermin.
  6. I believe I have recommended him before on this thread but anyone (thinking Elite here in particular) wanting a detective series with hints of the supernatural should try Phil Rickman's Merrily Watkins books. Not wanting to repeat myself have a look at what other people think. https://www.goodreads.com/series/42006-merrily-watkins
  7. Been trying to stay away from the leaked episode but caught a scene with arya and brienne on youtube (which is brilliant by the way)and the resolve is cracking.
  8. There was almost an awkwardness between but this was deliberate. This was two stubborn leaders meeting for the first time. Still think it will happen however. My only concern is the actual actors. I don't think either are the best, in comparison to some of the others, and I only hope when it comes to it they sell it convincingly.
  9. I maybe over thinking this but did anyone else see the pile of scrolls that Sam has to copy and think, I bet there is going to be something useful in that lot. Been racking my brain as to what and going to throw it out there - it will be a declaration of marriage between Rhaegar and Lyanna and possibly even mention of a child. Yes Bran has had his vision but I just get this feeling they are going to produce some solid proof.
  10. Talking of candidates for Littlefinger's likely demise I think people have missed the most obvious one. There is a certain young girl with a taste and talent for killing on her way back to Winterfell who is unlikely to put up with any of his shit.
  11. Travelers - Time travel series found on Netflix. A solid 7.5/10. Basic premise is that the future is shit and humanity is hanging on by a thread. You never actually see any of this, probably due to budgetary reasons, and this information only comes from characters in the here and now. How it works is a consciousness from the future over writes a subject from the past. They also only use people who were going to die and obviously whose death could be then be avoided with foresight. Their mission is then to change the past to improve the future. Really enjoyed this. Actors are good and the characters particularly Marcy are interesting. Expanse - 2nd series. 8.5/10. Much improved from the first series. If you had a look but weren't sure I would say try again. There aren't many space TV series at the moment but this is probably the best out there.
  12. When you have a little more money to spare you could buy a separate headphone amp. Not necessarily this but something like it. https://www.amazon.co.uk/TPA6120A2-Fidelity-Headphone-Amplifier-Adapter-x/dp/B00A2QLMX6/ref=sr_1_16?s=electronics-accessories&ie=UTF8&qid=1499459020&sr=1-16&keywords=headphone+amp
  13. If you want to use your headphones it looks like you can connect the deck to a laptop and then use your headphones from there.
  14. Pretty sure that you can connect that deck directly to those speakers.
  15. You need some active speakers with a RCA input. Something like this. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Edifier-Studio-1280T-loudspeakers-bookshelf/dp/B00GBN50SC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1499458207&sr=8-2&keywords=active+speakers They won't have the 3.5mm jack output you need for headphones however. That might be a bit of a tall order. You could get a separate headphone amp. Of course this advice all depends upon the fact your record deck has a built in pre amp............
  16. I've got the Denon Envaya Mini and really like it. The sound quality is surprising good considering the size of the thing. I use mine quite a lot as a substitute for the speakers on the laptop. One tiny word of warning in regard to bluetooth. I've always found there to be drop outs and I am not talking just about the above speaker. I have a Arcam Mini Blink receiver which does the same. This manifests itself as the occasional glitch in a song. It's one of those things if you are not paying attention to you could miss but once you hear it you keep an ear out for.
  17. She said she received a “categoric assurance” from the prime minister that an arrangement between the Conservatives and the DUP would see “absolutely no rescission of LGBTI rights in the rest of the UK." Anyone else read that as but they can run riot with their bigotry in NI?
  18. I'm currently using an Uwell D1 tank and I have to say I absolutely love it. So much so I actually got myself a spare tank. Flavour is fantastic, coils last forever and yes, it doesn't leak, at least not in normal use. The airflow is at the top like a lot of these anti leak tanks so normal problems of leakage are done away with. If it has one shortcoming it's that it will leak if turned upside down - a small problem if like me you carry it in your bag when going to work. Other than that I can't recommended it enough. Talking of mods my first proper one the kangertech subox went berserk last week. Burnt out two coils (the first time happened when it was loose in my bag so gave it the benefit of doubt) and got hot enough on the second occasion to melt the plastic in the drip tip of my tank. Lasted a little longer than the nine months mentioned earlier but not by much.
  19. Into the Badlands - Season 2 Not sure if this got a mention the first time round but I'm really enjoying this. A Hong Kong style martial art series set in a post apocalypse world. I'm tempted to say it's a bit of a guilty pleasure but I think it deserves a little bit more acknowledgement than that. It's never going to be mentioned in the same breath as those great TV series which get mentioned over and over on here but viewed purely as an adventure story it's damn good fun. I might also have the tiniest crush on the Widow.
  20. Depending upon your circumstances you don't even necessarily have to over pay the mortgage when consolidating debts into it. You can simply reduce the term of mortgage instead. In fact that's quite often a better bet than going the over payments route because as good as it sounds on paper many people find reasons not to do it in practice. Once the 2,3 or 5 year deal is finished you remortgage back to the original term.
  21. It's a little bit weird but in a good way. Certainly refreshing in the sense it breaks the mould of what fantasy usually is. Given that fantasy allows you to write about pretty much anything a damn lot of is set in a pseudo mediaeval world. I was just checking online to make sure we both talking about the same book and see the third book came out this month. I know what I will be doing this weekend now.
  22. Never really got on with Abercombie myself. I know he is highly rated and I'm not going to knock anyone who thinks differently because I can kind of see the appeal. Personally if you want bleak fantasy than it's the Black Company by Glen Cook and for everything else in the vein of physical fantasy there is David Gemmell. The art of telling the same story over and over again without losing satisfaction.
  23. If you are after crime novels the Matthew Scudder series by Lawrence Block is pretty decent. It's been a while now but if my memory is reliable it starts a little slowly but really hits its stride around novel four or five .
  24. New series and I believe new world. The opening line; It is important, when killing a nun, to ensure that you bring an army of sufficient size. For Sister Thorn of the Sweet Mercy Convent, Lano Tacsis brought two hundred men.
