Southampton 4 Liverpool 4 (May 28 2023)

    matchreportheader.jpg

Well that was kind of fitting wasn’t it? A shit end to a shit season. It could have been worse, but it was still shit. The game I mean, although the season also comes under that description.

There was nothing at stake in this game other than pride and I’d say that what we saw suggests there really isn’t a great deal of that currently. Southampton have already been relegated yet we let them score four times. Fucking hell.

Of course we did have an under strength side and Van Dijk and Alisson had been given an early holiday. There was no Darwin either due to his sore toe and Robbo was missing with a knock he picked up the other day. Bobby and Milner were given starts, Kelleher was in goal and Gomez, Kostas and Matip all came into the back four.

I wasn’t expecting much to be honest, but this definitely was worth than I expected. To go 2-0 up and then end up 4-2 down is pretty bad like. Not that I was particularly arsed as most of my attention was on the game at Goodison. I was watching our game on the laptop on a shit stream that kept crashing, and Everton were on the telly.

I was more emotionally invested in the Everton game than this one but it was still pissing me off seeing the goals flying past Kelleher. The game didn’t really matter but it kind of did in that we’ve had a shit season and the players should have been pulling out all the stops to ensure they ended on a positive note.

You’ve got Mo tweeting about what a shit season it is and how they let themselves and us down, and then he goes out and plays like he’s won a competition to be there. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen him so ragged with his control. Don’t get me wrong, there was no lack of effort from him. There never is. He just didn’t bring his game with him down to the South Coast. Weirdly, he’s been pretty shit in a lot of these bad performances we’ve had against bottom feeders.

That being said, we scored four goals in spite of how below par he was and the problems - as they have been for much of the season - were at the other end. You take Alisson. Konate, Van Dijk and Robbo out and I guess this is what’s left.

"We need a massive summer and I just don’t see it happening."

Yep, that's the one.  I'm angry and upset before it's even happened.  I keep hearing / reading about "four possibly five" signings.  It just isn't going to happen.  There is not one indication that it will.  Actually there's a record of the exact opposite.

I'm not FSG-Out, but only because the alternatives are even less palatable.  But the truth is, whilst they have given us the time of our lives, we'll be living off memories of these past few years for the foreseeable future.

Gut-wrenching.

I thought kelleher was at fault for at least 3 of the goals. Harvey looked like a player when he came on (still not sure what his position is) and Mo would get a hat trick on another day.

But now it’s time to rest and recharge my batteries. 2022/23 will not be missed.

Couple of things from the game.. I didn't watch it live, but going off the highlights I thought it was strange Gomez playes as the left sided CB. I'd have thought he would have been better equipped to play the Konate role, and cover Trent when's out of position. Considering he's played at Right back himself, and has decent pace, it seemed a weird one to play Matip there.

Also, on Trent himself, he looked poor for 2 of the goals. First one where he's massively behind the offside line playing Ward Prowse on and then making a half hearted effort to stop the shot. Then also on the 3rd, where he bottled the tackle on the edge of their box. Granted, there was still the entire fucking length of the pitch left to stop the goal but still, it was weak as piss. I'm actually now in the camp of buying a quality right back and playing Trent right of the 3 midfielders. The dual role is a lot to ask of him and literally none of the midfielders we're being linked with are doing it for me (maybe Mcallister, but not for the price) so i'd rather see Trent in there.

Just massively underwhelmed and i've got no faith in the recruitment this summer. We'll end up spending decent money on 3 or 4 average players. The numbers being touted for Macallister and Mount seem insane to me. Don't want to keep harping on about Bellingham, but he and another cheaper one (i'd even prefer Ward Prowse over Mount) makes so much more sense. Guess we'll never know what went on but it's infuriating.

Only good thing during this cluster fuck of a season has been your reports, Dave. I have said this before and will say it again, I have no idea how you motivate yourself to write reports for games like the one against Southampton.

Microcosm of the season.

Don’t agree with the Gakpo-Sterling comparison though.
Sterling usually misses them.

Everyone , and I mean everyone, knows we need a big summer. Owners most of all. If we don’t get a big summer, I think we can assume, safely, that FSG don’t give a fuck about winning stuff.

If that’s the case they really should go. City are likely title winners again (meh)  but there are other shiny things to win and we need to be in there competing.

It’s what we exist for.

Player of the season is Alisson, notable mention to D. Usher for reporting on the little good stuff and the myriad shit stuff with such brevity.

Oh, and thanks again Bobby.
