Got the footie bus special on St John's Lane last night and during the journey I saw a Chinese lad on the bus reading that rag. It did surprise me, but he obviously didn't know the possible offence that would cause. Though I was tempted I said nothing on the bus.
When I got off he was behind me and obviously going to the game. By then he'd put the said rag in his backpack. I asked if I could look at his paper as we neared the Albert. He had difficulty understanding me but he fished the rag out. Once he handed it to me I told him: sorry but that rag is not going in the ground, he remonstrated and looked a bit bemused. I promptly walked away and binned the rag.
I know he didn't understand much English and probably couldn't comprehend my reaction but even so I resent anyone particularly of a Liverpool persuasion taking that rag into the stadium.
I'm sure there are whoppers who have been collared in a similar way, in fact I've heard of quite a few other such occurences. And personally I'd give them the same treatment. It was like a red rag to a bull.
Was I right to react like this or should I have left him alone?
Myself, I thought I did the right thing, but he still needs to be educated. Hopefully, he'll speak to someone in Cantonese and they'll explain why that rags elicits such anger among our fans.
