So Ecclestone is definitely off to Blackburn? As for Hamill, he was dropped by Blackpool recently and only got back into the starting eleven this weekend because of an injury. Read a piece where their boss was saying that he isn't consistent enough which, if I remember correctly is what was said about him when he was still at the academy.

It is interesting to see N'Gog play for the reserves as it must mean that he's out of the game next Wednesday.

I believe that Rafa said that he wants to overhaul the academy when he spoke to SOS. In fact, it was one of the examples he gave that he was staying. As you pointed out, however, he seems to have issues with giving young players a chance irrespective of who brought them to the club. The argument for Spearing and Darby applies just as much to San Jose and Pacheco. Read in another forum that tomorrow there is a reserve team friendly against Chelsea and Lauri Della Valle has been called up for that. Don't know whether there are any other academy players involved but sure hope so. There is a lot of talent there (Ecclestone, Amoo, Scott, Pourie, Pepper, Ince) and it would be a shame to waste it.

The only explanation that I can think of is that Benitez wants to operate his keep the two squads seperate sort of what happens in Spain where the reserves have a completely different set-up to the first team. What this will achieve, however, I don't know.

Whoever wrote that clearly can't count seeing that we already have four Brazilians (they missed out Vitor Flora). There were some rumours that three Brazilian U16 were having a trial at the club. Haven't heard more about that, however.

Got injured with the Hungarian U21. Gutted to see how Spearing and Darby are being treated, not to mention the whole of the academy set-up. The fact that we're signing a striker from an unknown Brazilian 3rd Division outfit rather than risk giving the likes of Ecclestone a chance in the reserves says it all really. The pattern then repeats itself with the first team.

Isn't Martin Kelly a defender? Why is he listed with the keepers? As for Hyppia it isn't the fact that he wasn't included that is a worry but rather that apparently he wasn't even told that he was being left out.

How come no posts saying that he is not good enough for the club (in their opinion) by people who have never seen him play? Standards in this place are slipping.

He's a good player but far from superb. Also, his reputation in Italy isn't the best as he's seen as being something of a problem character. I wouldn't have been disappointed if he'd joined us but am not that he's gone elsewhere either. PS - He's a right midfielder, not a right back.

Not according to Barry who apparently had an agreement with O'Neil upon signing the extended contract that the club wouldn't block his way if a Champions League club came for him. What O'Neil forgot to tell him was that they wouldn't budge 1p from what they considered to be his value. Strange way of not standing in his way. Let's not forget that Carson's loan deal was made on the proviso that Villa would sign him at the end of the season and O'Neil didn't have any qualms in letting Carson out to dry by going back on that particular agreement as well.

That goal was on his first team debut and he was just 18. Tore the Inter back-line to shreds on the night. Saw an interview with him recently where he was asked what he tought after that goal. His answer: I'm rich now!

There's no doubt that he's a good player and a definite improvement on what we have. However, I do have three nagging worries. The first surrounds how he will settle in England because he doesn't exactly seem like the cosmopolitan type. The fact that Benitez speaks fluent Italian should, however, help and he's already had success with Italian footballers: remember that he transformed Amadeo Carboni from a journeyman footballer to a stalwart of his Valencia side. The second worry is that he's had one really good season and there have been too many one season wonders not to worry. Finally, there is the fact that he's better going forward than he is defending. He's more of a wing-back a-la Jason McAteer to give an example. That the same seems to be said about Degen seems to be a hint that Benitez might be about to change approach next season and adopt a more attacking mentality.
