That was the week that was (Jan 16-20 2023)

Monday Jan 16:

Fair play to Neil Warnock for making me laugh at something related to the debacle at Brighton. Him blaming Thiago for the first goal was something else. Who else could watch that goal and point at Thiago and go “that’s his fucking fault is that”. No wonder some of his players have come to blows with him. Didn’t Chris Morgan take a swing at him once? Probably because he got the blame for someone else missing a pen. Silly cunt.

There have been significant rumblings about Qatar being in for us over the last day or so. Mostly twitter talk but some hints from outlets who aren’t necessarily known for spreading this kind of thing without there being some smoke. It goes without saying I’d be dead set against it, but I don’t think it would even matter what the likes of me thinks. A high percentage of match going fans would feel the same way, but the overall fanbase, specifically overseas fans who don’t go the game and spend all their time kicking off on Twitter about FSG, Henderson and Milner, they would be all in on anyone willing to come in and throw a load of money at us to rival what City, Chelsea and (eventually) Newcastle will be spending.

There was a twitter poll that had thousands of votes and over 80% said they’d be in favour of a Qatar takeover. Those of us who don’t want it will be in a minority and I’m not sure what we could do to stop it. Sure, we’d protest and kick up way more of a stink than any other fanbase would, but we couldn’t stop it. The fan on the board thing FSG introduced is unlikely to have any power of veto and even if it did, who decides on that anyway? Would it be SOS members? I fear not. It’s moot anyway as the fans won’t have a vote on it and FSG could sell to whoever they liked. Would they be arsed where the money came from? Nope.

So if something like this happened I’m sure there’d be protests and it would come down to whether any potential buyer would be put off by that. They might, it’s entirely possible they’d think “you ungrateful fucks, we’ll take our cash elsewhere” in which case we’d have yet another oil state backed club to overcome. More likely they’d just ride it out in the knowledge that eventually the noise would die down. Because it would, it always does. That’s how sports washing works. We’d make more noise than most but ultimately it would be futile and we’d just have a choice to either suck it up or walk away.

Klopp would also have to make that choice. If the same people who hosted the world cup were to buy us, do you think he could work for them after all he said about it? I don’t. I reckon he’d probably quit and I would hope that is the case because I’d hate to see him sat there having to face questions about working for human rights abusers. Doesn’t bear thinking about really.

I know, and not all match going locals would be against it either.
