"After I tweeted it yesterday I received the message that Liverpool will give him a break of three weeks and when he returns back he will start his pre-season," Verheijen told Goal.com on Monday.
"They will train him gradually, so he will miss the start of the season. They expect him to be on the bench for the second game and then start the third game.
"If that is the case, it is a great development and a real breakthrough. It is also a big compliment to the planning of Kenny Dalglish and his coaching staff. They are not looking at the next game, they are looking at the 38 games.
