  1. 325 lead and 6 wickets in hand, with an hour to go on day 3 plus the extension. Who would have predicted that on Wednesday morning?
  2. The morning session tomorrow is massive in terms of getting a result. Both batsmen starting again, with a new ball to take after ten overs -- it's all set up to skittle them out and get batting again. If we don't take advantage, and the Aussies are still batting at tea, we're probably heading for a draw. Gutted that I won't be up to watch the first session, but I won't be going to bed yet for at least another hour. No way I'm crawling out of bed at 4am, unless I happen to get up for a piss around that time.
  3. I don't think it was a bad day for either side. After the way the morning started, 343 runs on the board in 85 overs is a fantastic day's work. If Buttler had held onto his wicket at the end, I would have said it was England's day all over, but that just evened the board a little. Ultimately, we won't know how good this position was until both sides have taken 10 wickets. I'm still a bit worried how we'll go bowling tomorrow, but still, I'll take the runs on the board.
  4. I admit, it felt very nice to hear the Johnson song again. If there was anyone in the crowd who'd gone to Australia last time, I bet that was fucking cathartic for them. One thing I will say -- if Broad reverts to his habit of hurling down half-trackers on that surface tomorrow, I hope someone takes him out back and puts him down.
  5. The most thorough bowel-emptying I ever experienced was the unplanned combination of a day's fiber overdose (bran cereal brekky, big plate of beans on toast at dinner and lentil stew for tea) followed by a night getting dangerously bladdered on absinthe. The next morning, I heaved one continuous, uninterrupted log out the back entrance for what seemed like about 10 minutes without stopping. Never felt so empty in my life. And the best part, my turd was this vivid electric green colour. A proper sci-fi shit.
  6. Good day, considering where we could have been in the morning. A few concerns with the batting, but we've got to a decent score. Will have to wait and see how our bowling goes on that track...
  7. Brilliant, Aussie. Enjoy it mate... The cricket that is, not the kid, they're just a load of nuisance! Away Ashes series are brilliant timing for the telly in my neck of the woods: first ball around 5pm, done at midnight. Home in the evening, takeaway meal and straight on the beer. Home series... Not so much: play starts at 3am. I'll be up for the start tomorrow, but figure I'll be watching two sessions out of three for the rest of the summer.
  8. Yeah, that`s the obvious answer, but I`d be worried about exposing Bell more to the new ball right when he`s just finding some form. Also a bit concerned about moving Root around given his history of losing form moving around the order ... not so much these days with the form he`s in, but mucking around with your best player on the eve of the Ashes is still a bit dodgy. Another option would be having Ali up to 3, where he bats for Worcs, and giving Bairstow the license-to-smash-it spot down at 8.
  9. Broad is also coming into form nicely. He'd been improving with England, then took 7-84 in an innings for Notts, making 34 and 50 with the bat. Ballance, on the other hand, has remained utter shit for Yorkshire. He's a massive concern. If his technique and confidence are going just in time for the Ashes, the Aussies will destroy him. Bairstow is the obvious man to come in on form. Innings of 219, 125, and now another 100, plus his batting for England against NZ. But he`s not really a number 3, so how would you move things around to bring him in?
  10. Genuinely disappointed for Harris. Outstanding bowler, and to accomplish what he's done with a body held together by paper clips and bits of string is incredible. Seems to have been one of the nicest Aussies going, too. All the England lads been living up to say so. Read as well that half of his career Test wickets came in Ashes series. Deserves a proper salute as he goes -- damn fine cricketer.
  11. Rashid is very handy with the bat. Yorkshire consider him a genuine all-rounder, not a leggie who can bat a bit, and he's got the figures to back it up. First-class average is around 35 ; Ali's is around 38, so there's not much between them. If Ali doesn't take wickets and goes at something like 4 or more an over, which he's done lately in Tests, there's nothing to lose from picking Rashid and potentially plenty to gain from it. There was a time, not so long ago, that Harris being injured for an Ashes Test would have been a comfort to England. Now it's a goddamned irrelevance.
  12. 13 man squad for the first Test, and Rashid gets a call. So does Finn. Whitaker: "Adil Rashid's inclusion provides Alastair and Trevor with plenty of bowling options and the surface at Cardiff will dictate who makes the final XI." Reckon there's little chance of a change from the Headingley Test, but if Ali continues struggling with the ball we might see Rashid get a sniff later in the series. Not much chance of Finn playing either. Wood has made a really good impression, and Stokes is the wild card.
  13. You can imagine him sitting there, trying to think of something nice to say about Everton. "The beautiful stadium ... Er ... The knowledgeable fans ... Um ... The stylish football we played ... The songs from the terraces ... Uh ... Oh, fuck it. Thanks for the memories."
  14. The appointment isn't a huge matter in the long run, and I'm not going to get hysterical about it. This does make you wonder just what the hell went on in that season review though. What deficiencies in the setup are going to be corrected by sacking the other coaches and getting this guy in?
  15. That depends. Who were they going to start fracking?
  16. Only 17/25. So many memories ... Shame I drank about a third of them away over the years!
