I would imagine it's because these guys live and die by the strength of their contacts. Say what you like but - in purely journalistic terms - as the guy running the show Purslow is a hugely credible* source. That's why Maddock, Winter, Bascombe and the likes have essentially become propagandists for the current regime. *Of course what he's feeding these journalists is not 'credible', it's bullshit: he knows it, they know it, we know it but it has to be done when you're effectively running a football club through the media. We're about to employ a 'flavour of the month' manager and Broughton's email reply in justification of Benitez's dismissal should tell you all you need to know on that score.

Not sure if serious etc. The teams above us will strengthen and one or two below will do the same. Can you honestly envisage Liverpool having a stronger (or even as strong a squad) than we had last season? Seriously? I'd say that was more delusion than optimism. What if we don't finish in the top four? Will everybody be calling for Hodgson's head?

Those in the depths of despair over Hodgson's appointment need to get a grip, because we sure as hell haven't finished falling yet. The man's on a hiding to nothing, in my opinion, and although I'm hoping (nay, praying) that he confounds expectations and performs a miracle I fear we'll struggle and our new scapegoat will take the heat off the real cunts for a while and our next appointment will be a relegation-escapologist.

I have a feeling the decision to sell our top players was taken long ago (if they wish to leave). Keep thinking back to that bizarre post-Hull press conference where Benitez went on and on about 'senior sources' potentially leaking information to the press about any sales being down to Rafa himself. He was at pains to state that any player sales would NOT be at his behest and was pre-empting the smear campaign he saw coming. Of course that's all academic now. But Hodgson will presumably know what he's walking into.

Posted this elsewhere but Matt Lawton has written in the Mail today: "Do we really believe Roy Hodgson would do a better job when there is nothing in his record to suggest he is a better manager than the man currently occupying the role?" Rewind a month and he could be talking about Liverpool.

There was an interesting discussion on Talksport(!) with Collymore (yeah, I know) about this earlier. They were on about how it's the culture which is flawed and yer Gerrards and Rooneys are just exceptions to the rule who would be even better players for being coached as youths using continental methods (not so sure about that one myself). There was a guy on who is a coach at Blackburn's academy and he said he ALWAYS tries to get his kids playing on the deck but it's often the school team and Sunday league coaches and even the parents who instruct the kids to 'RUUUN'; 'Get it up there' etc. so you're swimming against the tide. The fella said there are youth coaches who want to play a more passing style and bring through the kids with technique (for they do exist) but they are often overlooked in favour of taller, faster and more physically developed youngsters. I think while the majority of youngsters are being brought through on their ability to "adapt to the physical demands" of English football nothing will change. A chicken/egg situation basically.
