    I thought at the time Borthwick was discarded too quickly. He got smashed around a bit one spell in the worst England series in living memory... possibly the worst series ever. Didn't deserve to go straight on the scrap heap for that, but Rashid is clearly the next man in line. 247-4, McCullum and Watling past 50. This is starting looking like a tricky chase.

    Watching that live at Lords today is not something I'll soon forget. Truly special. It was like he just switched on and went, and nothing could stop him. It was mesmerising. The partnership was i think 132? And he got 101 of them. Both his innings in this match show the cricketer Stokes was always capable of becoming. Now let's leave him there at 6 and keep letting him play his natural game. There'll be more days like this to come.

    I'm coming home for 3 weeks holiday the day after the election, so I'm hoping for a hung parliament, weeks of bitter in-fighting and chaotic negotiation with rival coalitions being struck and widespread confusion as to who is running the country. That should knock a few cents off the pound, and save me money when I change my currency.

    Yeah. Such an important player when he was at his best, but it's hard to see a future for him even if he got everything sorted. He's not a proper opener, even at his best, and the #3 spot looks locked down for years with Ballance doing... Well, basically what Trott used to do at 3. Play like a rock, defend his wicket, and steadily accumulate big scores. He played some brilliant innings though, and was a huge part of some of the most successful cricket England have played in my lifetime. That's what he'll be remembered for.

    His keeping still needs work to reach international level. Wonderful batsman, but he will cock up some of the basics behind the stumps. In other news, the Beeb are talking as if the new ECB job is definitely going to Strauss now. Fucks to that. Fantastic player and successful captain, love him for what he did at the crease against the likes of Australia, but he is not the man to move English cricket forward. With Strauss, Cook and Moores, it'll be full steam stay-right-where-the-fuck-we-are.
