One of the forgotten members of the current Liverpool squad in Adrian could be on track for an emotional return to the club where it all started for the Spaniard.
Mundo Deportivo (per Get Football News Spain) report that Real Betis have identified the veteran goalkeeper as a key summer target.
Adrian joined the Betis academy at the age of 11 and after graduating into senior ranks, he started his career with the club’s reserve teams before finally getting his break in the top flight after seven season of hard toil in 2012 and played 32 games for the first team.
It set the scene for Adrian to make a move to England and he spent six seasons at the East London clubs making 150 appearances overall.
Moving to Liverpool as a free agent in 2019, his spell has coincided with a golden era for the Reds under Jurgen Klopp.
Ironically the Spaniard who had only been at the club for just over a week was pivotal in securing some silverware for the club in a penalty shootout victory against Chelsea in the Super Cup when deputising for Alisson Becker which also happened to be the first honour he won in his career.
Since then however, the memories in a playing sense have not being as joyful, with an error-laden performance against Atletico Madrid in March of 2020 seeing the Champions League holders relinquish their crown.
With the impressive Caoimhin Kelleher displacing Adrian as the backup to Alisson, opportunities have been incredibly few and far between for Adrian as he has made just two appearances in the last three seasons one which came in the 3-1 Community Shield victory against Man City.
Despite his considerable lack of any game time, Adrian has remained at the club and is viewed as a a true professional, so much so that despite being out of contract, the club are believed to have offered him another one-year deal.
But a return to Betis may be too tempting to turn down with the report stating he would be ‘delighted’ on a prospective move.
If it does transpire it possibly opens the door for an academy graduate to fill the third slot in the goalkeeping pecking order, and it indeed is a topical part of the squad in general with much discussion whether Kelleher will in fact remain with his sights seemingly set on becoming a Number One which is unlikely to occur as long as Becker remains with the club.
