About 10, maybe 15 years ago, (you lose track) didn't we, amid much trumpeting announce some sort of "special relationship" with Crewe? Did this relationship ever end? Did it ever begin in fact?

I don't think the idea of us finishing top 4 this season was that outrageous tbh. We were 3rd best team in the league last season as far as I can remember from the point Kenny took over up 'till the end of the season. (Apologies if that's not quite true but I'm sure it was at least up until the last 2 games.) We then supposedly strengthened the team. I know I'm being overly simplistic and as it turns out we didn't really strengthen at all, but then that's been cancelled out by the fact both Arsenal and Chelsea have been so average themselves. So much so that right up until we actually lost to Arsenal last week, we still had a realistic chance of achieving it. I think that in the circumstances we've missed a great chance of finishing 4th, and bearing in mind it's hard to imagine Chelsea and Arsenal being like that next season, it's a chance that might not come around again any time soon without more strengthening, real, actual strengthening this time. None of which should be construed as an attack on Kenny, who as long as he still wants the job, should be given more time to get it right. He is Kenny Dalglish after all.

Even if they'd got the 4th, which apart from VPs miss they didn't really look like doing anyway, I doubt they'd have survived ET. Players dropping like flies and the rest looking pretty dead on their feet. A bit like us against A.Madrid a couple of years ago.

I've been to Lanzarote twice, first time was a good while ago to Teguise, more recently to Playa Blanca. Both of these resorts were very nice but the island itself when you travel round it is the most bleak, ugly thing I've ever seen. A black, barren, plantless, lava covered moonscape. The sea is quite cold too despite the all year round sunshine. I'd go back like. :biggrin:

And tbf, the only reason we went out to them was because of a combination of a corrupt ref and/or linesman who between them somehow failed to notice a shot from Rush was over the line by about a yard as they waved play on. And Brucie having one of his "suspicious" nights. :whoops: We only used to get brief highlights on telly back then for games like this, and the package the Bulgarians sent didn't show the ball over the line incident for some strange reason..

Sorry to be a smart arse in me 1st post, but I really don't think we played AZ more than once, and I'm sure Hansen never scored more than one goal in any single game either. They weren't a bad side but were nowhere near in the same class as us back then, and we made ridiculously hard work of it in both legs. We were coasting 2-0 in the 1st leg before paying the price for thinking the game was won as it eventually finished 2-2. Then after we finally went 3-2 ahead at Anfield, those last few minutes were pretty hard going as we knew if they scored again we'd be out on away goals. They were a team that refused to lie down that's for sure.
