  1. But we need creative, witty banners and songs that highlight our point. What's riposte going to be when the Mancs inevitably come up with "Town full of racists?"
  2. It's almost funny how the 'guilty' verdict is waved about as proof against Suarez, when the whole point of LFC's anger was that the process was dodgy. You would think the verdict had come from Jesus Christ rather than a tinpot FA Committee whose investigation would be laughed out of a proper court.
  3. Can we not show a bit of wit rather than just screaming abuse at Evra? The media will stir that up as racist. Better to create banners and songs which highlight the injustice, call him a liar if you like, but just screaming hate at him will be counter-productive. I don't mind booing him, but we need to make it unequivocal that we are booing him because we think Suarez was stitched up - and that needs a bit more wit and wisdom than just setting the dogs on him.
  4. I'm surprised anyone would criticise Henderson's performance last night. His passing and movement were excellent and one thing about him is he tends to keep it simple rather than look for the Hollywood pass all the time - he rarely concedes possession. At 21, he shows a lot of promise, especially when played centrally where he belongs. A few years ago, people were rubbishing Lucas as he was learning the holding role and often made mistakes. Look at him now. I think the signs are that Henderson will turn out to be a decent investment.
  5. It's a good point. Kenny called on the players to create an atmosphere last night, but in truth they didn't need to - the fans were really up for this one. I do think our legendary 12th man has not been seen often enough in recent years. Too often there's a nervousness and negativity about the place, like people expect our hopes to be dashed at some point. If we go in 0-0 at half time against a 'lesser' team, patience tends to wear very thin. When I was growing up supporting Liverpool, I lost count of the number of teams who came and parked the bus, that we managed to break down eventually after a war of attrition, often in the last ten minutes. The crowd kept on supporting and believing, there wasn't the sniping you hear now (which is magnified x 1000 on the internet). The atmosphere used to occur naturally - obviously the night time European games were special, but it was an amazing place to go on a Saturday afternoon too. These days, the backdrop is too often a glum near-silence. So i think it is chicken-egg. Yes the players need to do more to inspire the fans, but the fans need to do more to inspire the players too.
  6. The game showed what we can achieve when we are up for it. Many of our best performances have come against better teams in recent years - not just under Kenny. He is right to try to instil the old Liverpool philosophy that the next game is the most important. If we played with such passion against the likes of Blackburn and Bolton, we would be in a better league position. The fans need to play their part too, as they did last night. As for the game itself, it was probably tighter than it should have been. We were very dominant, we wanted it more and City were outplayed. Yet we still conceded two goals. On both occasions,m we gave them too much space in front of our back four, which is where we miss a natural holding player, especially as Adam is so weak defensively. Gerrard did ok, and can play that role, though it's not his natural game - we need Spearing back for Saturday or to look at who else can play there - still think Henderson may be worth a go in a deeper role. There were lots of positives last night. Bellamy was superb, Kuyt had his best game this season, so arguably did Downing. The defence was solid apart from their second goal and Gerrard, Henderson and Skrtel all had fine games. Adam played a couple of great paases and his shot from the angle was impressive, though he still lacks so much defensively that we have to have someone alongside him with a specific remit to hold. He can't tackle - very nearly cost us a pen. And as someone sad earlier, we got the rub of the green last night. Deserved it on the play, but on another night we could have conceded that penalty, Richards would not have been penalised and we could have gone in two down at half time. mr Dowd's incompetence worked in our favour for once.
  7. 1. Bellamy. No contest. One of the best individual displays by a Liverpool players this season if not the best. Led the line superbly. Shame about his knees as he would be perfect at CF every game, with Suarez supporting from a wider position. 2. Kuyt. Back to the Dirk of old. Worked tirelessly and combined really well with Bellamy. 3. Gerrard. Dominated the midfield, which was some achievement given Adam's lack of support defensively. Drove us on second half. Honourable mentions for Skrtel and Downing, who had one of his best games for us.
  8. Adam is coming in for a lot of stick and his defensive capabilities leave a lot to be desired, but I think he's had a good game going forward thus far.
  9. I'm also concerned by the lack of a holding player. I hope to God we don't line up 4-4-2 - Hodgson did that at City last year and we got stuffed, it was the first sign he was out of his depth. Hopefully Henderson, Adam and Gerrard all central, with Downing and one of Bellamy/Kuyt wide. Slightly disappointed that Adam is playing on current form, he never looks the part without a holding player alongside him. Dropping Carroll is correct decision, we need to be able to keep the ball tonight. It's difficult going in to a home leg in the lead against a team who are capable of turning it around. Sit too deep and you hand them the initiative - one goal levels it up - go at them and you may get hit on the break. I think the atmosphere will compel us to attack and I think the players will be up for it - I totally disagree with the idea we should park the bus - do that at Anfield and we will create a nervousness in the ground which will transmit to the players.
  10. This double Texeira story reminds of The Kid From Argentina in Roy of the Rovers. I hope we haven't signed the wrong one; Showing my age,I know.
  11. That's not what Xabi says. Xabi Alonso blames Rafael Benitez for exit from Liverpool - ESPN Soccernet Hard to imagine a Basque being desperate to sign for Real in any case.
  12. Seriously, people need to drop this Rafa shite. He is not coming back to Liverpool. There is no way the owners would do that. I was a fan of his throughout his period as manager and I think he did a good job under impossible circumstances. But he did alienate and lose players by the end - his treatment of Alonso was really poor management - and the performances on the field were not much better than what followed under Hodgson. He lost his way towards the end and some of his spin was Houllier-level in its embarrassment. He also developed a reputation as a political operator, which is the last thing FSG want. If Kenny goes, he will not be replaced by Benitez. People need to look at the fact we were in the relegation zone just over a year ago.Not all Kenny's signings have delivered and he is not above criticism, but if our first reaction to every defeat or poor run is to call for the manager to be sacked, then we are not LFC anymore, we are just another run-of-the-mill club. Dalglish understands our values better than anyone,he has given the club back its identity after years of horrible infighting and division, and the football played in most games since he came back is better than anything we have seen since the year we came second. We are nowhere near that level now,but that is because we lost too many good players in the G&H years. Rebuilding takes time, there will be setbacks, there will be some disappointing signings, there will be shit performances(all of which happened under Rafa). What is important is how we respond. Kenny's response to Saturday is the right one, but some of the internet fans' response is embarrassing. We have an unholy alliance between the knee jerkers and the Rafa Ultras, who sometimes seem to be Benitez supporters before they are Liverpool supporters. I don't criticise Rafa as a man or a manager, though I think he made mistakes, just as Kenny will. But for people to be calling for him to replace Dalglish is to demand the jettisoning of all the progress we have made away in restoring what Liverpool FC is about. We may or may not make the top four this season - we still can,but the loss of two of our three best outfield players is a huge blow. But FSG have started a project at Anfield and in charge of that project is a man who knows the club and what it represents better than anyone, the man who led us through our darkest hours and delivered three league titles in five years. People calling for his head should hang theirs in shame.
  13. I wouldn't break them up either, but can see Carragher getting a game. May even be a case for him in holding role.
  14. I'd agree with that. Unfortunately, building a team takes time, not all signings will work out and there will be setbacks. What is not acceptable is not to try, and plenty tonight didn't look they were. Kenny's return has been great for the club, we have our identity back and he was very clear tonight about what it means to play for LFC. But he is not beyond criticism and I thought the tactical setup was poor tonight - Adam and Gerrard in central mid, Hendo on the right? - and he didn't change it when it wasn't working. None of this means he is failing or should be sacked, have people forgotten how bad things actually were when he came in - in Rafa's last season as well as during the Roy Hodgson debacle? And I know people will point to H&G as a factor in Rafa's downfall, which they were, but so was Rafa himself - it got to the point when he had lost the players. I don't see that with KD today. To indiviudals, which is almost unfair given that only Bellamy emerged with any credit tonight. Adam was shocking and frankly he has been poor since Lucas got injured. he is ok with a decent holding player alongside, but he can look very average without someone doing the fetching and carrying. And he thinks he is a lot better than he is. Carroll actually did ok first half, but he still offers little or no threat in the box. His flick on was good, but it was his only contribution of note. We can talk about poor service, but at £35m, you expect a striker to generate some of his own impact. Maxi had a shocker. Good player, but when he has an off day, he just disappears entirely - though a simple pass to him from Adam may have changed the whole game. Henderson worked harder than most, but he just looks out of position on the right. I was amazed we didn't change it around second half and play him centrally, pushing Gerrard further forward. The entire defence wa poor, apart from Agger's attacking runs. Enrique had his worst game for us. Downing and Kuyt made no difference, but the players seemed to have chucked it in by then anyway. But neither has made a telling contribution this season. I wouldn't be surprised in Carra played on Wednesday, either at the back or in a holding role - he has faded as a player, but he knows what it means to play for Liverpool. Too many tonight looked like they didn't. How Kenny responds to this - and how the players do - will define our season. Key moment in the rebuilding project.
  15. Was going to ask same. Knee jerks of worst kind.
  16. I wouldn't pay £10m for Defoe. He's 29 for starters and while a fairly decent finisher, he's not going to transform us. He can't even get in the Spurs team. If Spurs are looking to trade up for the likes of Remy, I'm not convinced we should be inheriting their cast-offs. Defoe is another Downing/Adam - a decent Premier League player on his day, but he's not a poacher in the Fowler/Rush mode as some reports imply. You can only sign so many players like that - it's better to save your money for what you really need. Steven Fletcher of Wolves is a better finisher and younger - not saying we should sign him but he would offer more IMO - and if we have £10m to spend, there must be plenty of young strikers in Europe who are better than Defoe. I don't expect much activity from us in this window - KD has said as much - hopes of a Lucas stop gap have already evaporated and I think we will wait until the summer to add another wide player. I do think we need a striker - or we need to look at promoting the likes of Morgan - but one player is not going to change the team unless he's a pretty special player. If we are to buy now, I'd be inclined to buy a young player, especially if we're going to spend £10m. Hopefully Levy's price tag kills the debate in any case - once bitten by the Keane deal, he's not going to do us again.
  17. I have dealt with the PCC a lot in the past. You can only complain about a report if it is about you personally.
  18. We don't know what happened yet for sure. Some of the arguments on Twitter have been based on pure conjecture. Ant's version certainly sounds credible, but you could sense Ollie Hoult and others last night desperate for the race angle to be true. Then they can unfold a narrative about Dalglish and the club being apologists for racism and this is where it leads. This is in danger of becoming a campaign to remove Suarez from English football altogether. While I think the club has been right to defend the player robustly, it has led to an explosion of self-righteous anger in the media, many of whom seem to think a shoddy FA panel outcome represents conclusive proof of racism. The club needs to address all this - and they tried to address their commitment to anti-racism in their last statement. If there are racist allegations in this case, we need to investigate them fully and to the satisfaction of Oldham, their player and all concerned. I'm sure we will. But there is a wider issue of what is in effect a campaign against the club, Dalglish and Suarez by sections of the media who think we are in denial about the Suarez case. While defending the player correctly, we maybe haven't been clear enough in saying that calling someone 'negro' is not acceptable in this country and that Suarez made a mistake in using the term. There's also possibly an element of bitterness from some in the media at looking stupid over the Hodgson debacle, but this goes wider than Barclay et al. The Suarez case is being used as a stick to beat Liverpool with. But conspiracy theories about last night won't help us. The club needs to take control of a situation that is spiralling daily - and Fergie's pathetic response to our overtures suggests it will reach a crescendo by the time we go to OT.
