  1. We should be asking for 300 at a minimum. Should be good batting tomorrow, and we've got plenty of potential runs waiting in the shed. Go in with a decent sized lead and try to skittle them again. Gutted for Cook most of all. He looked in really good touch and could have made a big score. Freak dismissal.
  2. It's just impossible to like David Warner, isn't it? You can respect his ability, obviously, but you'd cross the street to avoid shaking hands with him... And looking at that stupid fucking moustache.
  3. I cheerfully withdraw what i said about Bell at three being a bad idea. Wonderful 50, played beautifully. Now we have to make this advantage count. Just about parity with 8 wickets in hand, the ball getting older with good batting conditions coming tomorrow. Put a foot down and grind them out of this game.
  4. And reports the last few days seem to indicate a much quicker surface than what we've been seeing. I read earlier today that, if you take out one freak match with a used pitch, the average first-innings score at Edgbaston this season is barely over 250. Should be lots happening in the morning, so hopefully we're bowling. If Wood doesn't make it back through his injury, it could be a big couple of days in Steven Finn's career.
  5. Whoever said that "word" first should have been kicked squarely in the genitals. It's the only way to discourage behaviour like that.
  6. Bell at 3 is... Well, they've basically got out the shovel to dig his grave there. Out of form, struggling for rhythm early in an innings, so let's ... get him in even earlier. Boycott said it: as fragile as we are, we basically need a third opener batting at three. Especially against this Aussie attack. Is Ian Bell a Test opener? Not even at his best, which is brilliant. Bell at 3 this summer makes as much sense as Trott opening the batting in the spring. Its the triumph of reputation and internal relationships over common sense. I hope I'm wrong, but id be surprised to see him go past 20 runs if we lose an early wicket at Edgbaston.
  7. Indeed. The funny thing about democratic governments is that they sometimes try to do what their electorate want them to do, rather than what their political and economic sponsors want. In strategic geopolitics, actual democracy is an unwanted variable. That's one of the basic lessons of, well, the last 70 years or so of human history.
  8. Bairstow deserves it. Consistently excellent for his county, and more than did a job when drafted in for England last time. I hope he takes his chance here. Would love to see him succeed and claim a spot. It's amazing that a man with an average of 47 in an 18 month Test career has been dropped. Ballance's series averages (including the one game he played in Australia, but not the current one since it's still in progress) are: 12.50 -- 67.00 -- 71.85 -- 66.20 -- 9.00. Hell of a fucking bell-curve is that! Barry Wom makes a really good point about scoring runs in the India series, as India were utter dogshit for most of the Tests. His figures were just as good against the Lankans though, who beat us, and he made some good scores in the Caribbean too. The thing is, I don't remember taking particular note of his technique when watching him last summer. Was he always so static and scratchy? I think I remember thinking his defense was really solid last year, but now I'm not sure. Whatever's going on, I hope his coaches lock him in the nets for a month and try to sort it out. Not really convinced by Lyth so far, but he should and probably will get the full series at least to show he's up to it. He should have played against the Windies to have more preparation, but... ECB.
  9. El Chapo is surely just thechap off here in a sombrero.
  10. Looking at that graphic ... God we're shit at batting at the top. Just spectacularly awful. How in the fuck has Gary Ballance still averaged nearly 50 in Test cricket when his feet are bolted down behind the popping crease, and why can't he do it -- whatever it was -- anymore? Where the hell did the Ian Bell who made 562 runs in the last home Ashes disappear to? Why have we still not managed to find a competent opener to replace Strauss? He retired three years ago FFS and we're still searching for someone who can see off the new ball occasionally without shitting his kecks.
  11. From the comment you quoted: Rutherford does actually hold a doctoral degree in genetics from UCL. I don't know what's required to become an authority on genetics, but I imagine that's a pretty good first step. On the article, it was a dreadfully shit piece of science writing, but his conclusion is still sound: it said we need lots more good research on this stuff, and don't let crackpot new-age mysticism get in the way of doing it and doing it properly. Good message to take away, even if the delivery was appalling.
  12. 5 out off the 10 wickets had their stumps knocked over. I think we've caught a glimpse of Aussie plans the rest of this series: bowl straight, make England shit.
  13. To be fair, the post you were initially responding to said it was not a significant shift TO the Lib Dems, as an even larger number had signed up to Labour. Which is true, it's not likely new support. In both cases, it's likely to be people voting for the party in the election and fucked off with the result, same as with the new Labour members. Not meaningful in itself, unless the party can hang onto them through an election cycle and actually get them involved in five years when the memory of why they signed up in the first place is a distant one. That tends to be difficult-to-impossible.
