Van Dijk: Being club captain would be a true honour if it comes my way

Virgil Van Dijk believes that there are plenty of players in the squad that can step up to the plate and lead the team after the departure of two key leaders of the modern era.

This summer has been one of major transition with captain Jordan Henderson and his deputy James Milner both departing the club along with another player who has been there since the beginning of the Jurgen Klopp era in Roberto Firmino.

With another experienced player in Fabinho another experienced player more than likely to depart before the closure of the transfer window, it means the average age of the group has dropped substantially.

It also presents an opportunity for someone in the squad to lead in their own fashion and Van Dijk is one of the main candidates along with his fellow defenders in Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

While admitting the loss of Henderson leaves a big void, the Dutchman says the departures are just part of modern day Football and he would be truly honoured to be the next captain of the club  (per the Mirror).

“(Jordan) is someone who has been so important for us in our success over the last years, in the success for the club in the last years so we’re going to miss him, we're going to miss him a lot. But that's part of football as well, players come and go, and others have to step up now and that's the reality.

“I've been captaining the side multiple times already over the last couple of years and it's always a proud moment to do that. We will see what the future brings but it would be a huge honour to captain the side.

However he is adamant that there are others who could easily fill the captaincy role or come into the leadership group.

”I see leaders definitely, and definitely players who can become that leader of the team so I'm confident that that will happen. Those names who left us were very important for us with their experience and obviously the quality they have as well, but others have to step up now."
