How should the board manage expectations? Hastily sacking the manager as Real Madrid have done is not the Liverpool Way and cannot be condoned, especially one that has delivered 2 Champions Leagues and 2 La Liga Titles. Their board has said today: “We decided to change while we were in a good position rather than wait for it to turn bad” They now want Carlos Quieroz – what a guy with such a good profile is doing as understudy to the drunken Gin Soak only he knows! In the past two years a minority Liverpool fans have called for GH to go and this has turned into something like 20% in the last 6 months, this will increase if things stay the same for another six months. We do not need to ask the question, we know that Houllier with his Liverpool trophy haul would have been sacked by now at clubs such as Real Madrid, AC Milan and Barcelona etc…. he would not have survived last season at those clubs. We know the he has not won a BIG trophy yet. But would sacking him have been worth it? Will Real Madrid be any more successful without Del Bosque? I very much doubt it. Will Liverpool get the Championship any sooner under a new manager? The two most successful managers in English football at the moment include one that has been there about 16 odd years and another who has stayed at Arsenal for 6 years. Is the merry go round worth it? Do continental managers have far more pressure than those at home? In my opinion Liverpool Football Club have it spot on in supporting the manager through thick and thin. We are a very successful club who crave the league championship and Champions League and until we are challenging for that every year we won’t be happy… that is a given. However events at Real Madrid have confirmed to me why we are a special club… a club that will stand by the manger – whether we stand by him for as long as it takes or give him another year to get it right remains to be seen. It’s no secret that I am a big critic of Houllier and he would probably have been gone by now if I was CEO, but thank God we have people at the club who are not as hasty. I am torn between wanting us to be challenging big time and showing loyalty to our manager who has had us challenging for the league in only one of his 4 seasons here. Remember, we are Liverpool Football Club; there is a thin line between loyalty and doing what is best for the club. I think the club is playing it perfect at the minute. So what are our expectations? And how should we manage them?
