They can vote for the Scottish and Welsh assemblies as well. I haven't heard of any reported problems with that.

But the motivation was because the opinion polls showed they would be more likely to vote yes and SNP than the rival parties. If the polls showed teenagers prefer centrist and conservative options  like their grandparents, they would not be voting before centrists or conservatives take over.

Just missing that wee bit of centuries of cultures embracing the wisdom of their elders.

It's not about representation or participation or anything like it, it's about people expecting certain age groups would vote more or vote less in their favour. Like Scotland's independents referendum, when voting age was lowered because teenagers were less likely to think about financial and other implications of independence. .

And the drinking age of 18 only applies if you're buying it yourself. You can drink with a meal at a pub from 16 and if you're at home, you can legally drink from the age of 5. Not that I'd condone that sort of thing, mind.

You suspect that the reluctance to give the vote to 16 year olds doesn't really stem from anything other than the fact that barely any of them would end up voting Tory.

And vice versa. Since they don't vote in most, Tory-less countries.

  4. Elections are every four or five years in most countries and denying people the right to vote would hurt society's cohesion. You can exclude the unemployed next, also, why should poor people have the same say as people who pay much more taxes. Test people how impressionable they truly are and give them the right to vote accordingly. Low IQ and and uneducated people should have half a vote, PhDs two votes each etc.

That sounds like a better way to go than burial or cremation.  I might tell Mrs O'T to leave me in the garden for the magpies and seagulls.

Maybe, but it may be tricky for cities with over a million people.

Also, I guess it's a cultural thing, but it was easier to bring some flowers and light a candle at my mother's grave, instead of checking out if vultures have finished eating her innards. Father though, I would have been quite happy to go Zoroastrian.
